  • Continuation power flow has been developed to remove the ill-condition problem caused by singularity of power flow Jacobian at and near at steady-state voltage instability point in conventional power flow. Continuation power flow consists of predictor and corrector. In prddictor, the direction vector at the resent solution is caluculated and the initial guess of next solution is determined at the distance of step length. The selection of step length is a very important part, since computational speed and convergence performance are both greatly affected by the choice of the step length. This paper presents the practical step length selection algorithm using the reactive power generation sensitivith. In numulation, the proposed algorithm is compared with step length selection algorithm using TVI(tangent vector index).

  • In the present study, an economic design of Anchored Geosynthetic(AG) System applied mainly to reinforce unstable soil slopes is investigated. For this purpose methods of stability analysis are developed to determine the optimum installation angle, required minimum length and maximum spacing of nails. Anchorage of nails within the soil mass is achieved by frictional resistance to pull out along the effective length of the nails. Cases of infinite slope and finite slope are dealt with individually. Silce methods of stability analysis developed in the present study are limit-equilibrium-based. For the case of finite slope Spencer method which considers interslice force is modified to evalyate the overall stability. In addition, the effects of various design parameters on requried length and spacing of nails corresponding to the optimum orientation of nails are analyzed. Based on the analysis, a simplified equation is given for the optimum nail orientation. Also the importance of optimum nail orientation is illustrated throughout design example, and the appropriateness of judgment criterion are examined.

  • Railway bridges are highly susceptible to resonance due to the equidistant axle load with constant speed of train. Thus, it is necessary to verify dynamic characteristics and quantities against dynamic guidelines. Recently, many newly developed bridge systems have been developed for medium span length between 30m and 40m. However, less variety of bridge systems are available for span length between 45m and 50m. Steel box girder is considered as an alternative for span length between 45m and 50m. This study is to investigate the dynamic properties and safety of steel box railway bridge. Modal properties are extracted and moving load analyses are performed using mode superposition method. The results are then compared to various standards.

  • This article presents strain gradient elasticity-based procedures for static bending, free vibration and buckling analyses of functionally graded rectangular micro-plates. The developed method allows consideration of smooth spatial variations of length scale parameters of strain gradient elasticity. Governing partial differential equations and boundary conditions are derived by following the variational approach and applying Hamilton's principle. Displacement field is expressed in a unified way to produce numerical results in accordance with Kirchhoff, Mindlin, and third order shear deformation theories. All material properties, including the length scale parameters, are assumed to be functions of the plate thickness coordinate in the derivations. Developed equations are solved numerically by means of differential quadrature method. Proposed procedures are verified through comparisons made to the results available in the literature for certain limiting cases. Further numerical results are provided to illustrate the effects of material and geometric parameters on bending, free vibrations, and buckling. The results generated by Kirchhoff and third order shear deformation theories are in very good agreement, whereas Mindlin plate theory slightly overestimates static deflection and underestimates natural frequency. A rise in the length scale parameter ratio, which identifies the degree of spatial variations, leads to a drop in dimensionless maximum deflection, and increases in dimensionless vibration frequency and buckling load. Size effect is shown to play a more significant role as the plate thickness becomes smaller compared to the length scale parameter. Numerical results indicate that consideration of length scale parameter variation is required for accurate modelling of graded rectangular micro-plates.

  • The lap splice lengths of deformed steel reinforcing bars and GFRP bars were experimentally compared using beam specimens. The purpose was to evaluate the length required of the GFRP bar to develop strength at least equivalent to the conventional steel reinforcing bar. The main test variable was the lap splice length: 10, 20, 30 $d_b$ for the deformed steel bars and 20, 30, 40 $d_b$ for the GFRP bars. Two different types of GFRP bars were tested: (1) one with spiral-type deformation and (2) plain round bars. Elastic modulus was about 1/5 of the steel bars while the tensile strength was about 690 MPa for the GFRP bars. Nominal diameter of the GFRP bars and steel bars was 12.7 and 13 mm, respectively. Normal strength concrete (28-day $f_{cu}$ = 30 MPa) was used. For the conventional steel bars (SD400 grade), strength over 400 MPa in tension was developed using the lap splice length of 20 and 30 $f_{cu}$. Only $87\%$ of the nominal yield strength was reached with the lap splice length of 10 $d_b$. For the spiral-type deformed GFRP bars with $40-d_b$ lap splice length, 440 MPa in tension was determined. The maximum tensile strength developed of the GFRP bars with smaller lap splice lengths decreased. The plain GFRP bar was not effective in developing the tensile strength even with $40-d_b$ lap splice length. Development of the cracks on beam surface was clearly visible for the beams reinforced with the GFRP bars. Mid-span deflections, however, were significantly smaller than the comparable beams with conventional steel bars indicating potential ductility problem.

  • Delayed hydride cracking (DHC) is an important failure mechanism for Zircaloy tubes in the demanding environment of nuclear reactors. The threshold stress intensity factor, $K_{IH}$, and critical hydride length, $l_C$, are important parameters to evaluate DHC. Theoretical models of them are developed for Zircaloy tubes undergoing non-homogenous temperature loading, with new stress distributions ahead of the crack tip and thermal stresses involved. A new stress distribution in the plastic zone ahead of the crack tip is proposed according to the fracture mechanics theory of second-order estimate of plastic zone size. The developed models with fewer fitting parameters are validated with the experimental results for $K_{IH}$ and $l_C$. The research results for radial cracking cases indicate that a better agreement for $K_{IH}$ can be achieved; the negative axial thermal stresses can lessen $K_{IH}$ and enlarge the critical hydride length, so its effect should be considered in the safety evaluation and constraint design for fuel rods; the critical hydride length $l_C$ changes slightly in a certain range of stress intensity factors, which interprets the phenomenon that the DHC velocity varies slowly in the steady crack growth stage. Besides, the sensitivity analysis of model parameters demonstrates that an increase in yield strength of zircaloy will result in a decrease in the critical hydride length $l_C$, and $K_{IH}$ will firstly decrease and then have a trend to increase with the yield strength of Zircaloy; higher fracture strength of hydrided zircaloy will lead to very high values of threshold stress intensity factor and critical hydride length at higher temperatures, which might be the main mechanism of crack arrest for some Zircaloy materials.

  • The extensive usage of pretensioned prestressed concrete component in modem construe- tion as structural members mandates precise understanding of its mechanism. Especially, an adequate transfer of prestressing force from steel tendons to concrete around the end regions of the member is a critical issue. Due to the importance of the topic, several investigators have formulated equations modeling the transfer bond length based on various bonding mechanism between steel and concrete. However, the existing models are still inadequate in predicting the bond development in pretensioned prestressed concrete members. Therefore, this study presents a model of transfer bond length based on rational theory that can simulate experimental results. The model is developed into solid mechanics based structural analysis computer program. The program is validated by comparing the analysis results with experimental results of bond stress distribution, concrete strain profiles, and transfer length in pretensioned prestressed concrete members. The proposed analytical procedure in this study can be utilized as a useful tool for realistic evaluation of transfer length in pretensioned prestressed concrete members.

  • The present study is concerned with the application of Constant arc-length method that proposed by Crisfield in the investigation of the geometrically nonlinear behaviour of spatial structures composed by truss or beam element. The arc-length method can trace the full nonlinear equilibrium path of Spatial structure far beyond the critical point such as limit or bifurcation point. So, we have developed the constant arc-length method of Crisfield to analysis spatial structure. The finite element formulation is used to develop the 3d truss/beam element including the geometrical nonlinear effect. In an effort to evaluate the merits of the methods, extensive numerical studies were carried out on a number of selected structural systems. The advantages of Constant arc length method in tracing the post-buckling behavior of spatial structures, are demonstrated.
