  • Ethanol-based dry shampoo may provide an important and valuable resource in convenience for patients and busy people due to the unnecessity of water to wash out. In this research, ethanol-based dry shampoo was prepared by simple mixing of specific detergent materials and different contents of ethanol. Cytotoxicity was examined by the MTT assay to determine less-irritative materials of detergent and shampoo. Patch test on skin was performed to figure out the degree of skin irritation and also antimicrobial effect was examined by the eradication of bacteria. As a result, it was confirmed that ethanol-based dry shampoo had non-cytotoxicity as well as an antibiotic effect. Therefore, ethanol-based dry shampoo will be able to provide esthetic and hygienic hair treatment purposes with cleanliness and convenience.

  • BACKGROUND: As the demand for strawberries increases, people are paying attention to food safety in strawberry, especially pesticide residues. To remove the pesticides from strawberry, various washing and processing technique in households are additionally required. METHODS AND RESULTS: Strawberries were washed with water, detergent, alcohol, and ultrasonication and processed to strawberry jam. The mean reduction efficiency according to the washing solvent and method was found to be higher in the order of detergent (42.5%) > alcohol (41.7%) > water (41.3%) > ultrasoniation with alcohol (40.2%) > ultrasoniation with water (38.6%) > ultrasoniation with detergent (36.9%), but there was no significant difference among the treatments. The residue levels of pesticides during processing to jam decreased by 11.9-94.4% for etoxazole, fluopyram, procymidone, spiromesifen, and prochloraz, while the other pesticides were concentrated by boiling, or rather increased by 11.8-40.2%. However, when the residue levels were converted to residual amounts in consideration of the change in weight after processing, the residual amounts of the tested pesticides were reduced by 59.8-98.4% during processing. The processing factor (PF) were different for each pesticide, but PFs were < 1 for all washing solvents and methods, and 0.06-1.40 when processed into jam. CONCLUSION: To ensure the consumption of pesticide-free strawberry, the most efficient washing method is to immerse the strawberry in fresh water for few minutes, followed by rinsing them under running water.

  • The detection capability of UV flame detector in dust environment would be impaired. In this study, an experiment was conducted, in an effort to further understand the behavior of UV flame detector and to evaluate its detection capability in industry dust environment. Detergent powder, coal powder and dry extinguishing agent were selected as dust sources. Flaming sources include propane and gasoline flame. Experiment results indicate that dust can cause remarkable attenuation of UV flame radiation. The concentration of dust and the length of air layer where dust dispersed determine the reduction of radiation intensity. On the other hand, the attenuation of UV radiation also depends on the chemical and Physical properties of dust.

  • Consumer Product compounds are used in homes and disposed in wastewater where they typically receive waste treatment. After treatment, sludge and effluent are released to the environment resulting in the potential exposure of terrestrial and aquatic organisms to these compounds. To ensure the environmental safety of these compounds, the environmental risk posed by chemicals released into the environment must be assessed. A reasonable, consistent and cost-effective method to conduct environmental risk assessments and to prioritize testing of these chemicals is needed which addresses risk to organisms residing in the terrestrial and aquatic compartments of the environment. This paper provides a fundamental understanding of the technical basis of environmental risk assessment using the major surfactant(i.e., LAS) used in the laundry detergent industry worldwide as a case study.

  • The purpose of study is to find out a suitable cleaning method for excavated textiles of Jeon-ui Lee(1570∼1647). The textiles were excavated from her tomb in 1997, and her descendents put them in a box without any treatment and kept them in the warehouse since then. We used two kinds of silk as samples, non-dyed and dyed textile. The experiment was performed by 8 kinds of wet cleaning and dry cleaning methods, an ultrasonic cleaner was used in the wet cleaning, decane and perchloroethylene were used as solvents in the dry cleaning. The use of the ultrasonic cleaner in the wet cleaning method did not show any damage to the fibers of the textiles and it not only cleaned well but also was safe for the fugitive dyes. It resulted in more effective cleaning when the detergent was used together. Therefore, it is effective to use the ultrasonic cleaning on the delicate historical textiles and helpful to the operator's safety and environment.

  • Volatile organic solvents are used to extract the bioactive materials from raw materials for environmentally-friendly farming materials (EFFM), but the solvent should not remain in EFFM for the safety reasons. Thus qualitative and quantitative analysis method for the solvents using Headspace-GC were evaluated. Water content depleted the detection ratio of hydrophilic solvents and disturbing the hydrophilic interaction with solvents by DMSO might be helped to increase the detection ratio (up to 715%). Surfactant concentration affected to the detection ratio (68.5-179.1%) while surfactant type was not deeply involved the solvent detection. On the other hand, matrix-matched calibration method was accepted the minimum requirements for the quantitative analysis of the solvents in EFFM.

  • Objective: This study investigated the effects of different dietary energy sources on early postmortem muscle metabolism of finishing pigs. Methods: Seventy-two barrow ($Duroc{\times}Landrace{\times}Yorkshire$, DLY) pigs ($65.0{\pm}2.0kg$) were allotted to three iso-energetic and iso-nitrogenous diets: A (44.1% starch, 5.9% crude fat, and 12.6% neutral detergent fibre [NDF]), B (37.6% starch, 9.5% crude fat, and 15.4% NDF) or C (30.9% starch, 14.3% crude fat, and 17.8% NDF). After the duration of 28-day feeding experiment, 24 pigs (eight per treatment) were slaughtered and the M. longissimus lumborum (LL) samples at 45 min postmortem were collected. Results: Compared with diet A, diet C resulted in greater adenosine triphosphate and decreased phosphocreatine (PCr) concentrations, greater activity of creatine kinase and reduced percentage bound activities of hexokinase (HK), and pyruvate kinase (PK) in LL muscles (p<0.05). Moreover, diet C decreased the phosphor-AKT level and increased the hydroxy-hypoxia-inducible $factor-1{\alpha}$ ($HIF-1{\alpha}$) level, as well as decreased the bound protein expressions of HK II, PKM2, and lactate dehydrogenase A (p<0.05). Conclusion: Diet C with the lowest level of starch and the highest levels of fat and NDF could enhance the PCr utilization and attenuate glycolysis early postmortem in LL muscle of finishing pigs.

  • This study was conducted to seek optimum concentration and treatment time of fermented rice water (Rizen) to disinfect food-borne bacteria in kitchen towel. $2.65\;log_{10}cfu/g$ of E. coli was reduced when double or triple diluted fermented rice water was treated during 2 hours. In case of concentrated fermented rice water, crude and double diluted solutions showed complete sterilization after 2 and 5 hours, respectively. On the other hand, triple, quadruple, quintuple diluted solutions needed 24 hours for complete sterilization. The effect of fermented rice water as a disinfectant was compared with water, detergent and chlorine treatment against E. coli and S. Typhimurium contaminated in kitchen towel. The initial number of E. coli in untreated kitchen towel were $5.0\;log_{10}cfu/g$ and were decreased to 4.32, 3.70 and 3.02 by treatments of water, detergent and chlorine, respectively. The double and triple diluted fermented rice water and double diluted concentrated fermented rice water also reduced the E. coli in kitchen towel to 2.43, 2.30 and $1.88\;log_{10}cfu/g$, respectively. The initial number of S. Typhimurium in untreated kitchen towel were $4.80\;log_{10}cfu/g$ and were decreased to 4.12, 3.58 and 2.81 by treatments of water, detergent and chlorine, respectively. The double and triple diluted fermented rice water and double diluted concentrated fermented rice water also reduced the E. coli in kitchen towel to 2.14, 2.03 and $1.59\;log_{10}cfu/g$, respectively. Consequently, the fermented rice water is thought to be a good disinfectant to reduce food-borne bacteria like E. coli and Salmonella contaminated in kitchen towel.

  • Red sedimentation substance contains large portion of Fe. The earth retaining structure of a tunnel and ground water containing more portion of Fe than other area are the major factor of this substance In case of white sedimentation substance, the most frequently founded ingredient is CaO, which is occurred in case grouting injection materials for ground reinforcement is transmitted into a tunnel system by ground water. This substance is doesn't affect safety of a tunnel Black sedimentation substance is often found in tunnels near station. This substance is a mixture of either white or red sedimentation substance and detergent material in station transmitted to a tunnel drainage system.
