As amount of waste matter rapidly increases with fast growth of cities and industry, how to dispose them has arisen as an important problem. Current policy of the government on disposal of waste is repressing generation of waste itself and in case of already generated waste, resource cycle waste management system that recycles waste after proper environmental process is getting established. Therefore recycling of waste and industrial by-products is rising hugely. One of largely wasted matters is waste gypsum, which was categorized as designated waste but changed to general since 1994. Due to disposal cost and lack of impurities removal technology, recycling of it was quite low. However, as impurities removal technology using semi-dried desulfurization process is developed lately, study on recycling of waste gypsum is going on lively. This study examines possibility of utilizing waste gypsum as alternative for concrete cement and analyzed attributes of waste gypsum before and after ball mill process to find out proper alternation ratio, and conducted strength and property tests on concrete subject whose percentage of cement use is substituted with 0, 5.0, 7.5, 10.0 and 12.5% of waste gypsum.

Limestone has been used as absorbent in the FGD(Flue Gas Desulfurization) system, the DeSOx system of thermal power plant. This study investigated the desulfurization characteristics of the two different limestones, 325mesh and 200mesh particle size. Experimental analysis showed that the dissolving rate of limestone became much slower as the particle size increased. But the desulfurization efficiency depended on the L/G(liquid/gas) ratio and slurry pH regardless of the limestone particle size. The quality of gypsum produced in the FGD process increased as the limestone particle size or the slurry pH decreased. To reduce the cost of absorbent, the mixed limestone which were composed of 200 and 325mesh limestone with 5 different ratios were tested.
In desulfurization facilities of oil-fired power plant, gypsum scale is attached in the absorber inner surface as the operating time increases. For this reason, the maximum possible load of the power generation is set down, resulting in further generation stop. Cleaning of absorber for scale removal can be determined at the time of setting down of the maximum possible load. In this study, 6 weeks before the maximum possible load of the power generation was down set, at the same time and desulfurization facilities outlet $SO_2$ concentration value was more than 130ppm, absorber differential pressure exceeded $380mmH_2O$, it was confirmed to be the time that has elapsed 44 weeks after the previous absorber cleaning. Cleaning time of the absorber was predicted to be a time which has elapsed 50 weeks from the previous cleaning time.
Flue gas desulfurization(FGD) is an effective technique to remove $SO_2$ gases of coal-fired plants. Limestone is usually used as desulfurizing agent. In this study, we use the limestone sludge which is a by-product of steel industry in order to replace desulfurizing agent of FGD process. Physical and chemical characteristics analysis of desulfurizing agent was conducted. Desulfurizing agent using limestone sludge was fabricated by pre-treatment process and, then the agent was used on FGD process. Consequently, the tendency on the $SO_2$ concentration did not appear. And limestone sludge was considered as possible alternative agent for flue gas desulfurization process through absorber control system.

As a solution of both environmental issue of reducing carbon dioxide emission and sustainable issue of exhausting natural resources, in concrete industry, many research on recycling various by-products or industrial wastes as the concrete materials has been conducted. The aim of this research is feasibility analysis of additional reaction with ordinary Portland cement and flue gas desulfurization gypsum based on the blast furnace slag and recycled fine aggregate based mortar to achieve the normal strength range. Consequently, in the case of mortar replaced 10% FGD and 30% OPC for BS, 80% of plain OPC mortar's compressive strength was achieved. Furthermore, when the water-to-binder ratio is decreased to keep the practically similar level of flow, it is expected to be achieve the equivalent compressive strength to plain OPC mortar.

In this study, the applicability of CCMs (Carbondioxide conversion capture materials) manufactured by reacting carbon dioxide gas with DG (Desulfurization gypsum) as a cement substitute for secondary concrete products were evaluated and the basic physical properties of CCMs-mixed mortar and concrete specimens were measured to derive the optimal mixing ratio. The main chemical oxides of CCMs were CaO and SO3, and the main crystalline phases were CaSO4·2H2O, Ca(OH)2, CaCO3, and CaSO4. In addition, by the results of particle size analysis and heavy metal measurement, the applicability of CCMs as a cement substitute for secondary concrete products was confirmed. As a result of measuring the strength behavior using mortar and concrete specimens with CCMs, the compressive and flexural strength decreased as the mix ratio of CCMs increased, but requirements by the standards for interlocking blocks and retaining wall blocks, which are target products in this study, were satisfied up to the optimal mixing ratio of 10 wt.% substitution. Therefore, its applicability as a cement substitute for secondary concrete products was confirmed.

Jet Bubbling Reactors(JBRs) were operated for the removal of SO$_{x}$ in flue gases produced from many electric power plants. However, many JBR flue gas desulfurization (FGD) facility faced a decrease of SO$_{x}$ removal efficiency and an increase of scale problems with continuous operations. We increased alkalinity of the SO$_{2}$ absorbing medium by adding the dibasic acids (DBAs) to solve these problems more effectively. The SO$_{2}$ removal efficiency, the purity of CaCO$_{3}$ and COD of the wastewater was measured to identify the addition effects of DBAs (150, 200, 250, and 400 ppm) for 2hr in a day into the JBR attached to the large-scale power plants (400 MW$\times$3). Addition of the DBAs resulted in the improvement of the SO$_{2}$ removal efficiency from 2 to 5% and the purity of the gypsum from 1 to 2%; these improvement were due to the alkalinity increase of the absorbing medium and the reduction of a proportion of un-reacted CaCO$_{3}$, respectively. Also, the scale problems formed by un-reacted CaCO$_{3}$ inside the reaction zone of the JBR were substantially reduced. Even though the effluent COD of the wastewater slightly increased from 10~15 to 18~36 mg/l and the erosion problems in the injection pump and duct occurred, this method of increasing SO$_{2}$ removal efficiency by adding the DBAs could be considered as a profitable approach.ach.

In this research the processing method of Desulfurized Plaster is changed to cyclotomy, 0.3mm sieve analysis and 500℃ heat exposure, and by changing the mix rate of the binding agent to 0~20%, it was applied to mortar that used cyclic aggregate and blast furnace slag for testing. The test results showed that the flow decreased in the order of cyclotomy, high heat exposure, and sieve analysis according to the mix rate of FGD, and while the air volume decreased for cyclotomy, it was shown to have almost no effect on sieve analysis and high heat exposure. The setting time accelerated as the mixing rate of FGD increased, and the compression strength increased as the mixing rate of FGD increased and especially showed a high trend with cyclotomy and sieve analysis.

This study evaluated the mechanical characteristics and durability of porous concrete produced with a cementless binder based on ground granulated blast furnace slag (BFS), fly ash (FA) and flue gas desulfurization gypsum (CP). As a result, the void ratio was increased slightly from the target void ratio, by 1.12-1.42 %. Through evaluating the compressive strength, it was found that the compressive strength of porous concrete with cementless binder decreased in comparison to the compressive strength of porous concrete with ordinary Portland cement (OPC), but the difference was insignificant, at 0.6-1.4 MPa. Through the freeze-thawing test to evaluate the durability, it was found that the relative dynamic elastic modulus of porous concrete with cementless binder decreased to 60 % or less at 80 cycles. The result of the chemical resistance test showed that the mass reduction rate was 12.3 % at 5 % HCl solution, and 12.7 % at 12.3 and 5 % $H_2SO_4$ solutions.
