A Study on the Characteristics of Member Force, Horizontal Displacement and Concrete Strength by Design Elements of SPW Retaining Walls (SPW 흙막이 벽체의 설계요소별 부재력과 수평변위 및 콘크리트강도 특성 연구)

  • In areas where excavation works are carried out, it is very important to select a retaining wall method to minimize ground water level and ground subsidence changes. In this regard, the use of Secant Pile Wall(SPW) method, which can complement the disadvantages of the CIP method, is gradually domestic increasing for the construction of retaining wall method. This study investigated the design elements of the SPW method and the interrelationship between the structural stability factors of the wall. The design elements for the retaining method are the overlap length between piles, pile diameter, and the specifications of the H-Beam specifications, while the structural stability factors of the wall are the bending stress, shear stress, horizontal displacement, and concrete strength. The study results showed that the pile diameter and H-Beam specifications have a significant impact on the capacity of the H-Beam, the overlap length and pile diameter have a significant impact on the horizontal displacement, and the pile diameter and H-Beam specifications have a significant impact on the required strength of the concrete.

  • The purpose of this study is to survey and analyze the general conditions of infants\` apparel brands in Korea, review the sizes and specifications of each brand, analyze the differences and correlations among brands, and thereby, present the reasonable sizes and specifications for infants\` apparels in consideration of domestic and foreign specifications and infants\` health conditions. For this purpose, 13 brands manufacturing the apparels for the infants aged from 0 to 4 were sampled, and their design directors and outside pattern suppliers were surveyed through direct interviews. The collected data were processed for frequencies, mean, median and mode.

Flexural Overstrength of Reinforced Concrete Bridge Columns for Capacity Design (철근콘크리트 교각의 성능보장설계를 위한 휨 초과강도)

  • Capacity design is to guarantee ductile failure of whole bridge system by preventing brittle failure of columns and any other structural elements until the columns develope fully enough plastic deformation capacity. This concept has been explicitly regulated in most bridge design specifications of foreign countries except the current Korea Bridge Design Specifications. In the capacity design, the transformed shear force from flexural overstrength of reinforced concrete column is used as the design lateral shear force for shear design of columns and design of footings and piles. Different calculating methods are adopted by the design specifications, since the variability of material strength and construction circumstances of the local regions should be considered. This paper proposed material overstrength factors by investigating 3,407 reinforcing bar data and 5,405 concrete compressive strength data collected in Korean construction sites. It also proposed calculating procedures for flexural overstrength of reinforced concrete columns using the material overstrength. Finally, overstrength factor was proposed as 1.5 by investigating 1,500 column section data from moment-curvature analysis using the material overstrength.

Task based design of modular robot manipulator using efficient genetic algorithms

  • Modular robot manipulator is a robotic system assembled from discrete joints and links into one of many possible manipulator configurations. This paper describes the design method of newly developed modular robot manipulator and the methodology of a task based reconfiguration of it. New locking mechanism is proposed and it provides quick coupling and decoupling. A parallel connection method is devised and it makes modular robot manipulator working well and the number of components on each module reduced. To automatically determine a sufficient or optimal arrangement of the modules for a given task, we also devise an algorithm that automatically generates forward and inverse manipulator kinematics, and we propose an algorithm which maps task specifications to the optimized manipulator configurations. Efficient genetic algorithms are generated and used to search for a optimal manipulator from task specifications. A few of design examples are shown.

  • This paper proposed new IMC-PID controller design method that use loop shaping method. It could consider such design specifications as gain margin, phase margin, sensitivity function etc by appling the loop shaping method for tuning IMC-PID controller whose structure has only one design parameter and guarantees internal stability. To shape desirable loop gain, the relation between these design specification and parameter is derived by mathematical basis. And the availability of proposed in this paper tuning method that can regard design specifications is checked through example comparison and analysis.

  • This study proposes a high-performance PI controller design method for an oil cooler system in conjunction with zero position adjustment and the characteristic parameters in its closed loop control system. The characteristic parameters included PI gains are decided by design specifications such as settling time and overshoot. The fine tuning on decided gains was performed by adjustment the zero position to get more desirable control performances. The simulations and experimental results show that the proposed PI controller design for an oil cooler system was possible to accomplish good control performances and to satisfy the design specifications.

  • This paper proposes a design automation method for the flight control system of an aircraft based on optimization. The control system design problem which has many specifications is formulated as multi-objective optimization problem. The solution of this optimization problem should be considered in terms of Pareto-optimality. In this paper, we use an evolutionary algorithm providing numerous Pareto-optimal solutions. These solutions are given to a control system designer and the most suitable solution is selected. This method decreases tasks required to determine the control parameters satisfying all specifications. The design automation of a flight control system is illustrated through an example.

  • AISC-LRFD, ACI 318 and Korean design specifications for concrete filled rectangular steel tube columns do not consider the increasing of axial stiffness such as the elastic modulus and the yield strength due to the confinement effect. AISC-LRFD and ACI 318, however, shows different basic philosophy and equations for computing the elastic modulus and the strength of CFT columns. Through this experimental study, nine rectangular CFT column specimens were made by varying thickness steel tube and concrete strength, the axial stiffness were compared. The comparison between the design specifications and the test results shows different values on the yield strength of the CFT columns. Even though, yield strength of the CFT columns are very similar between AISC-LRFD and Korean design specifications.

Nonlinear collision analysis of heavy trucks onto steel highway guard fences

  • The design specifications of guard fences in Japan were reexamined and the revised specifications were implemented from April 1999. Because of the huge consumption in time and cost to test the performances of full-scale guard fences in the field, some assumptions are adopted while modifying the design specifications, and numerical analyses are necessary to confirm the impact performance and safety level of new types of steel highway guard fences. In this study, the finite element models are developed for the heavy trucks and steel highway guard fences to reenact their behaviors, and the solution approach is carried out using nonlinear dynamic analysis software of structures in three dimensions (LS-DYNA). The numerical simulation results are compared with the full-scale on-site testing results to verify the proposed analysis procedure. The collision process is simulated and it is also made possible to visualize the movement of the truck and the performances of guard fences. In addition, the energy shift of the truck kinetic energy to the truck and guard fence Internal energy, and the energy absorption of each guard fence component are studied for the development of a new design methodology of steel highway guard fences based on the energy absorption capacity.

An Algorithm for Automatic Generation of Dimension and Tolerance Charts (치수/공차표의 자동생성 알고리듬)

  • Determination of operational dimensions and tolerances is complex if there exist inconsistencies between operational and design specifications. Dimension and tolerance charts (D&T charts) have been used to establish the relationships among operational dimensions in complex machining. This chart proves that individual operations can be harmonized when they are interconnected. However, it is hard to generate the chart manually. Because operational dimensions and tolerances must meet the design specifications, the dimensions and tolerances of interconnected operations have to be verified serially for economical operations. In this paper, the chart is automatically generated from the interconnected operations. More importantly, all operational dimensions and tolerances displayed in the chart have been verified by using LP to meet the design specifications. Finally, the chart is converted to an operational routing sheet that contains a detailed process plan along with cutting speed, feed rate, and operational references based on material hardness, surface finish, and tool nose radius.
