  • In this study, three-dimensional imcompressible viscous flow analysis and optimization using response surface method are presented for the design of a jet fan. Steady, imcompressible, three-dimensional Reynolds averaged Wavier-Stokes equations are used as governing equations, and standard $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model is chosen as a turbulence model. Governimg equations are discretized using finite volume method. Sweep angles are used as design variables for the shape optimization of the impeller in response surface method. The experimental points which are needed to construct response surface are obtained from the D-optimal design and finally the shape of impeller Is achieved from using a numerical optimization for the response surface which is obtained from CFD.

  • This study describes a generation of artificial earthquake wane compatible with seismic design spectrum. In seismic response analysis of building structures, the input ground accelerations have considerable effect on dynamic characteristics of structures. Therefore, it is important to properly select input ground motions for seismic response analysis. In this paper, the artificial earthquake wave are generated according to previously recorded earthquake waves in past earthquake events. The artificial wave have identical phase angles to the recorded earthquake wane, and their overall response spectra are compatible with seismic design spectrum with 5% of critical viscous damping. Each simulated earthquake wave has a identical phase angles to the original recorded ground acceleration, and match to design response spectra in the range of period from 0.02 to 10.0 seconds. It is concluded that the artificial earthquake waves simulated in this paper ate applicable as input ground motions for a seismic response analysis of building structures.

  • This paper is for a reasonable selection of design response spectra for the seismic design of specific types of soil-structure interaction systems, e.g., underground structure within flexible soil profiles of structures on the shallow soil layers on the stiff bed rock. the existing backup data used for determining the design response spectra of the Code have been investigated and evaluated. For this purpose, various types of free field analyses have been performed using one-dimensional wave propagation theory considering the nonlinear properties of the soil profile. As a result, a reasonable approach of determining input response spectra for specific soil profiles has been proposed to be compatible to the design response spectra of the Code.

Shape Optimization to Minimize The Response Time of Direct-acting Solenoid Valve

  • Direct-acting solenoid valves are used in the automotive industry due to their simple structure and quick response in controlling the flow of fluid. We performed an optimization study of response time in order to improve the dynamic performance of a direct-acting solenoid valve. For the optimal design process, we used the commercial optimization software PIAnO, which provides various tools for efficient optimization including design of experiments (DOE), approximation techniques, and a design optimization algorithm. 35 sampling points of computational experiments are performed to find the optimum values of the design variables. In all cases, ANSYS Maxwell electromagnetic analysis software was used to model the electromagnetic dynamics. An approximate model generated from the electromagnetic analysis was estimated and used for the optimization. The best optimization model was selected using the verified approximation model called the Kriging model, and an optimization algorithm called the progressive quadratic response surface method (PQRSM).

Response Modification Factors and No Collapse Design of Typical Bridges (응답수정계수와 일반교량의 붕괴방지설계)

  • The purpose of earthquake resistant design for typical bridges is the 'No Collapse Design' allowing emergency vehicles just after earthquakes. The Roadway Bridge Design Code provides design provisions to carry out such 'No Collapse Design' with a ductile mechanism and response modification factors given for connections and substructure play key role in this procedure. In case of response modification factors for substructure, the Roadway Bridge Design Code provides values considering ductility and redundancy. On the other hand, 'AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications' provides values considering additionally an artificial factor according to the bridge importance categories divided into critical, essential and others. In this study, a typical bridge with steel bearing connections and reinforced concrete piers is selected and different response modification factors for substructure are applied with design conditions given in the Roadway Bridge Design Code. Based on the comparison study of the design results, supplementary measures are suggested required by applying different response modification factors for substructure.

  • The paper describes the second half of the research for the development of Neural-Networks-based model for the generation of an Artificial earthquake and a Response Spectrum(NNARS). Based on the redefined traditional processes related to the generation of an earthquake acceleration response spectrum and design spectrum, four neural-networks-based models are proposed to substitute the traditional processes. RS_NN tries to directly generate acceleration response spectrum with basic data that are magnitude, epicentral distance, site conditions and focal depth. The test results of RS_NN are not good because of the characteristics of white noise, which is randomly generated. ARS_NN solve this problem by the introduction of the average concept. IARS_NN has a role to inverse the ARS_NN, so that is applied to generate a ground motion accelerogram compatible with the shape of a response spectrum. Additionally, DS_NN directly produces design spectrum with basic data. As these four neural networks are simulated as a step by step, the paper describes the methods to generate a response spectrum and a design spectrum using the neural networks.

  • Optimization of the elastic joint of train is performed according to the minimization of ten responses which represent driving safety and ride comfort of train and analyzed by using the each response se surface model from stochastic design of experiments. After the each response surface model is constructed, the main effect and sensitivity analyses are successfully performed by 2nd order approximated regression model as described in this paper. We can get the optimal solutions using by nonlinear programming method such as simplex or interval optimization algorithms. The response surface models and the optimization algorithms are used together to obtain the optimal design of the elastic joint of train. the ten 2nd order polynomial response surface models of the three translational stiffness of the elastic joint (design factors) are constructed by using CCD(Central Composite Design) and the multi-objective optimization is also performed by applying min-max and distance minimization techniques of relative target deviation.

  • Design optimization of a transonic compressor rotor (NASA rotor 37) using response surface method and three-dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis has been carried out in this work. Baldwin-Lomax turbulence model was used in the flow analysis. Three design variables were selected to optimize the stacking line of the blade. Data points for response evaluations were selected by D-optimal design, and linear programming method was used for the optimization on the response surface. As a main result of the optimization, adiabatic efficiency was successfully improved. It is also found that the design process provides reliable design of a turbomachinery blade with reasonable computing time.

  • An optimal design method using a response surface method for dynamic characteristics of a washer is presented. The proposed method uses the design of experiment and a computer model is used for the experiment. The value of the cost function is estimated using a computer model for each case of the design variable variation. An orthogonal array is used to obtain best cases to be considered with minimum number of experimentation. Using these experimental values, optimal design is performed using a response surface method. The method used in this paper can be applied to any complicated mechanical systems that can be modelled and analyzed by a computer program. The method is applied to the design of dynamic characteristics of a washer.

  • This paper presents the structural design and response control system of the JR MEGURO MARC building, a 70 meters high office building with steel structure located in Tokyo (Figure 1). In order to achieve high earthquake resistance and useable office space, this building integrates a centralized response control system with deformation amplification mechanisms and tuned viscous mass dampers on the lower floor. Moreover, buckling-restrained braces (BRB) are installed on the upper floors to increase the effectiveness of centralized response control system and to reduce damage of the main frames in the event of a major earthquake. It features an efficient centralized response control system by amplifying the deformation of the dampers without creating a soft story.
