In order to improve the crane-hook's performance and service life, we formulate a multi-criteria shape design problem considering practical conditions. The structural weight, the displacement at specified points and the induced matrix norm of stiffness matrix are adopted as the evaluation items to be minimized. The heights and widths of cross-section are chosen as the design variables. The design variables are expressed in terms of shape functions based on the Gaussian function. For this multi-objective optimization problem with three items, we utilize a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm, that is, the multi-objective Particle Swarm Optimization (MOPSO). As a common feature of obtained solutions, the side views are tapered shapes similar to those of actual crane-hook designs. The evaluation item values of the obtained designs demonstrate importance of the present optimization as well as the feasibility of the proposed optimal design approach.
A new Pareto-optimal design algorithm, requiring least computational work, is proposed for a single phase AC solenoid actuator with multi-design-objectives: maximizing holding force and minimizing eddy current loss simultaneously. In the algorithm, the design space is successively reduced by a suitable factor, as iteration repeats, with the center of pseudo-optimal point. At each iteration, the objective functions are approximated to a simple second-order response surface with the CCD sampling points generated within the reduced design space, and Pareto-optimal solutions are obtained by applying($1+{\lambda}$) evolution strategy with the fitness values of Pareto strength.
In this paper, for constrained optimization problem, one multi-objective optimization algorithm that ensures both performance robustness and constraint feasibility is proposed when uncertainties are involved in design variables. In the proposed algorithm, the gradient index of objective function assisted by design sensitivity with the help of finite element method is applied to evaluate robustness; the reliability calculated by the sensitivity-assisted Monte Carlo simulation method is used to assess the feasibility of constraint function. As a demonstration, the performance and numerical efficiency of the proposed method is investigated through application to the optimal design of TEAM problem 22--a superconducting magnetic energy storage system.
In the practical design, it is important to extract the design space information of a complex system in order to optimize the design because the design contains huge amount of design conflicts in general. In this research FEA (finite element analysis) has been successfully implemented and integrated with a statistical approach such as DOE (design of experiments) based RSM (response surface model) to optimize the thermal deformation of an automotive disk brake. The DOE is used for exploring the engineer's design space and for building the RSM in order to facilitate the effective solution of multi-objective optimization problems. The RSM is utilized as an efficient means to rapidly model the trade-off among many conflicting goals existed in the FEA applications. To reduce the computational burden associated with the FEA, the second-order regression models are generated to derive the objective functions and constraints. In this approach, the multiple objective functions and constraints represented by RSM are solved using the sequential quadratic programming to archive the optimal design of disk brake.

The proposed design methodology represents a new approach to optimize the propeller-hull system simultaneously. In this paper, two objective functions are considered, the first objective function is Lifetime Fuel Consumption (LFC) and the other one is cost function including thrust, torque, open water and skew efficiencies. The variables of the propeller geometries (Z, EAR, P/D and D) and ship hull parameters (L/B, B/T, T and $C_B$) are considered to be optimized with cavitation, blades stress of propeller. The well-known evolutionary algorithm based on NSGA-II is employed to optimize a multi-objective problem, where the main propeller and hull dimensions are considered as design variables. The results are presented for a series 60 ship with B-series propeller. The results showed that the proposed method is an appropriate and effective approach for simultaneously propeller-hull system design and is able to minimize both of the objective functions significantly.
Shape optimization of airfoil in WIG craft has been performed by considering the ground effect. The WIG craft should satisfy various aerodynamic characteristics such as lift, lift to drag ratio, and static height stability. However, they show a strong trade-off phenomenon so that it is difficult to satisfy aerodynamic properties simultaneously. Optimization is carried out through the multi-objective genetic algorithm. A multi-objective optimization means that each objective is considered separately instead of weighting. Due to the trade-off, pareto sets and non-dominated solutions can be obtained instead of the unique solution. NACA0015 airfoil is considered as a baseline model, shapes of airfoil are parameterized and rebuilt with four-Bezier curves. There are eighteen design variables and three objective functions. The range of design variables and their resolutions are two primary keys for the successful optimization. By two preliminary optimizations, the variation can be reduced effectively. After thirty evolutions, the non-dominated pareto individuals of twenty seven are obtained. Pareto sets are all the set of possible and excellent solution across the design space. At any selections of the pareto set, these are no better solutions in all design space.
The fabric braided braking hose that delivers the driver's braking force to brake cylinder undergoes the large deformation cyclic motion according to the steering and bump/rebound motions of vehicle. The cyclic large deformation of braking hose may give rise to two critical problems: the interference with other adjacent vehicle parts and the micro cracking stemming from the fatigue damage accumulation. Hence, both the hose deformation and the fatigue damage become the critical issue in the design of braking hose. In this context, this paper introduces a multi-objective optimization method for minimizing the both quantities. The total length of hose and the helix angles of fabric braided composite layers are chosen for the design variables, and the maximum hose deformation and the critical fatigue life cycle are defined by the individual single objective functions. The trade-off between two single objective functions is made by introducing the weighting factors. The proposed optimization method is validated and the improvement of initial hose design is examined through the benchmark simulation. Furthermore, the dependence of optimum solutions on the weighting factors is also investigated.

Engineering system problems consist of multi-objective optimisation and the performance analysis is generally time consuming. To optimise the system concerning its performance, many researchers perform the optimisation using an approximation model. The Response Surface Method (RSM) is usually used to predict the system performance in many research fields, but it shows prediction errors for highly nonlinear problems. To create an appropriate metamodel for marine systems, Lee (2015) compares the prediction accuracy of the approximation model, and multi-objective optimal design framework is proposed based on a confirmed approximation model. The proposed framework is composed of three parts: definition of geometry, generation of approximation model, and optimisation. The major objective of this paper is to confirm the applicability/usability of the proposed optimal design framework and evaluate the prediction accuracy based on sensitivity analysis. We have evaluated the proposed framework applicability in derrick structure optimisation considering its structural performance.

One of the important problems in the vehicle design is vehicle handling and stability. Effective parameters which should be considered in the vehicle handling and stability are roll angle, camber angle and scrub radius. In this paper, a planar vehicle model is considered that two right and left suspensions are double wishbone suspension system. For a better analysis of the suspension geometry, a kinestatic model of vehicle is considered which instantaneous kinematic and statics relations are analyzed simultaneously. In this model, suspension geometry is considered completely. In order to optimum design of double wishbones suspension system, a multi-objective genetic algorithm is applied. Three important parameters of suspension including roll angle, camber angle and scrub radius are taken into account as objective functions. Coordinates of suspension hard points are design variables of optimization which optimum values of them, corresponding to each optimum point, are obtained in the optimization process. Pareto solutions for three objective functions are derived. There are important optimum points in these Pareto solutions which each point represents an optimum status in the model. In other words, corresponding to any optimal point, a specific geometric position is determined for the suspension hard points. Each of the obtained points in the Pareto optimization can be selected for a special design purpose by designer to create an optimum condition in the vehicle handling and stability.
