  • Recently, fusion camera systems that consist of depth sensors and color cameras have been widely developed with the advent of a new type of sensor, time-of-flight (TOF) depth sensor. The physical limitation of depth sensors usually generates low resolution images compared to corresponding color images. Therefore, the pre-processing module, such as camera calibration, three dimensional warping, and hole filling, is necessary to generate the high resolution depth map that is placed in the image plane of the color image. However, the result of the pre-processing step is usually inaccurate due to errors from the camera calibration and the depth measurement. Therefore, in this paper, we present a depth map upsampling method robust these errors. First, the confidence of the measured depth value is estimated by the interrelation between the color image and the pre-upsampled depth map. Then, the detailed depth map can be generated by the modified kernel regression method which exclude depth values having low confidence. Our proposed algorithm guarantees the high quality result in the presence of the camera calibration errors. Experimental comparison with other data fusion techniques shows the superiority of our proposed method.

  • We measured two-dimensional (2-D) oxygen distribution in the surface sediment layer of intertidal sediment using a simple and inexpensive planar oxygen optode, which is based on a color ratiometric image approach. The recorded emission intensity of red color luminophore light significantly changed with oxygen concentration by $O_2$ quenching of platinum(II)octaethylporphyrin (PtOEP). The ratios between the intensity of red and green emissions with oxygen concentration variation demonstrated the Stern-Volmer relationship. The 2-D oxygen distribution image showed microtopographic structure, diffusivity boundary layer and burrow in surface sediment layer. The oxygen penetration depth (OPD) was about 2 mm and the one-dimensional vertical diffusive oxygen uptake (DOU) was 12.6 mmol $m^{-2}d^{-1}$ in the undisturbed surface sediment layer. However, those were enhanced near burrow by benthic fauna, and the OPD was two times deeper and DOU was increased by 34%. The simple and inexpensive oxygen planar optode has great application potential in the study of oxygen dynamics with high spatiotemporal resolution, in benthic boundary layers.

  • A simple new technique of particle depth position measurement, which can be applied for three-dimensional velocity measurement of fluid flows, is proposed. Two color illumination system that intensity is encoded as a function of z-coordinate is introduced. A calibration procedure is described and a profile of small sphere is detected by using the present method as preliminary test. Then, this method is applied to three-dimensional velocity field measurement of simple flow fields seeded with tracer particles. The motion of the particles is recorded by color 3CCD camera. The particle position in the image plane is read directly from the recorded image and the depth of each particle is measured by calculation of the intensity ratio of encoded two color illumination. Therefore three-dimensional velocity components are reconstructed. Although the result includes to some extent error, the feasibility of the present technique for three-dimensional velocity measurement was confirmed.

  • Chroma key technique which composes images by separating an object from its background in specific color has restrictions on color and space. Especially, unlike general chroma key technique, image composition for stereo 3D display requires natural image composition method in 3D space. The thesis attempted to compose images in 3D space using depth keying method which uses high resolution depth information. High resolution depth map was obtained through camera calibration between the DSLR and Kinect sensor. 3D mesh model was created by the high resolution depth information and mapped with RGB color value. Object was converted into point cloud type in 3D space after separating it from its background according to depth information. The image in which 3D virtual background and object are composed obtained and played stereo 3D images using a virtual camera.

  • These days, as digital producing technique has been developed, 3D imaging technique is used in high-tech computer and T.V. Also study for 3D producing technique is actively in progress. Moreover, as James Cameron's movie, 'Avatar' released in 2009 was a box office hit, the issue about 3D image came to the fore again. At this point, I decided to study the effect of the visual depth caused by the color correction during the post-production stage. The purpose of this study is to offer information about processing effective images through data about the effect of the visual depth that applies the color correction during the post-production stage. Basically, I supposed that color and contract would have effects on depth of 3D image. As a result, I could find out the changes of visual depth, space perception and sense of depth throughout the experiment. Applying this result,, I produced the 15 minutes of 3D advertisement movie and I found out that the color correction during the post-production stage was very effective for 3D depth. The left image and the right image by beam splitter based rig and parallel rig were used for this study. Also I adjusted the strong contrast by the color correction during the post-production stage after correcting convergence and visual depth during editing. As a result, I could produce images which had strong sense of space and sense of depth.

  • This paper presents a method for 3D image construction using the hybrid (color and depth) camera system, in which the drawbacks of each camera can be compensated for. Prior to an image generation, intrinsic parameters and extrinsic parameters of each camera are extracted through experiments. The geometry between two cameras is established with theses parameters so as to match the color and depth images. After the preprocessing step, the relation between depth information and distance is derived experimentally as a simple linear function, and 3D image is constructed by coordinate transformations of the matched images. The present scheme has been realized using the Microsoft hybrid camera system named Kinect, and experimental results of 3D image and the distance measurements are given to evaluate the method.

  • Since hand gesture recognition was realized thanks to improved image processing algorithms, sign language translation has been a critical issue for the hearing-impaired. In this paper, we extract human hand figures from a real time image stream and detect gestures in order to figure out which kind of hand language it means. We used depth-color calibrated image from the Kinect to extract human hands and made a decision tree in order to recognize the hand gesture. The decision tree contains information such as number of fingers, contours, and the hand's position inside a uniform sized image. We succeeded in recognizing 'Hangul', the Korean alphabet, with a recognizing rate of 98.16%. The average execution time per letter of the system was about 76.5msec, a reasonable speed considering hand language translation is based on almost still images. We expect that this research will help communication between the hearing-impaired and other people who don't know hand language.

  • In this paper, we propose a new system which captures real depth and color information from natural scene and implemented it. Based on it, we produced stereo and multiview images for 3-dimensional stereoscopic contents and introduced the production of a digital hologram which is considered to the next-generation image. The system consists of both a camera system for capturing images which correspond to RGB and depth images and softwares (SWs) for various image processings which consist of pre-processing such as rectification and calibration, 3D warping, and computer generated hologram (CGH). The camera system use a vertical rig with two paris of depth and RGB camera and a specially manufactured cold mirror which has the different transmittance according to wavelength for obtaining images with the same view point. The wavelength of our mirror is about 850nm. Each algorithm was implemented using C and C++ and the implemented system can be operated in real-time.

  • The quantitative analysis of SB latex contents in coating color and coated paper was investigated with FT/Raman spectroscopy. From the measured FT/IR and FT/Ramon spectra, the peaks of coating color were compared with those of each compoents . Calibration curves were obtained by the area of latex peaks and PLS method of QuantIR program. The relation of predicted values in PLS method and actual values in coating mixtures and coating layer was examined. The components of coating layer in coated paper were investigated by EDS , X-mapping and SEM, The contents of latex in z-direction were calculated in the coating layer of unknown coated paper. The latex concentration measurements of Top layer and Pre layer in double coated paper show that each layer has different value. In single coated paper, it is clear that the latex concentration is highest at the surface and decreases with an increase of depth. From those results it is indicated that the latex migrates to the coated surface. The result of this study may be applied to the binder migration study and the quality control in paper mill.

  • 3D reconstruction is important issue in many applications such as Augmented Reality (AR), eXtended Reality (XR), and Metaverse. For 3D reconstruction, depth map can be acquired by stereo camera and time-of-flight (ToF) sensor. We used both sensors complementarily to improve the accuracy of 3D information of the data. First, we applied general multi-camera calibration technique which uses both color and depth information. Next, the depth map of the two sensors are fused by 3D registration and reprojection approach. The fused data is compared with the ground truth data which is reconstructed using RTC360 sensor. We used Geomagic Wrap to analysis the average RMSE of the two data. The proposed procedure was implemented and tested with real-world data.
