The purpose of this study was to examine the use of dentifrice among preschoolers in an attempt to provide consumers with the right information on the choice of dentifrice and toothbrush for different age groups of children. The subjects in this study were parents who raised preschoolers in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province. A self-administered survey was conducted over approximately three months from May to July 2007 to find out the state of their children's use of dentifrice. After the collected data were analyzed, the following findings were given: The greatest group (51.5%) needed parental help with toothbrushing. The biggest group of the patients (35.6%) considered it necessary for children at the age of 6 and 7 to brush their teeth with the help of their parents. As to dentifrice squeezing and parental outlook on that, the biggest group of the parents (49.4%) replied their children squeezed the dentifrice for themselves, and the greatest group (42.2%) thought that children needed parental help with dentifrice squeezing by the age of five. Regarding dentifrice swallowing and parental perception of it, the biggest group (61.9%) saw their children swallowing the dentifrice, and the greatest group (73.7%) believed that children must not swallow the dentifrice. The biggest group of those who found it okay for children to swallow the dentifrice (62.5%) thought that it would be no problem to swallow the dentifrice for child. Concerning the use of toothbrushes, the biggest group (96.7%) had their children use toothbrushes for child. The above-mentioned findings of the study showed that the children who are at the age of 3 or down should use non-fluoride containing dentifrice or just a small amount of fluoride that is as equal as the size of a pea. Children must brush their teeth under the guidance of their parents, and sustained education should be provided about that.
Objectives: This study is to compare measuring gingival and peridontal indices and changes in dental plaque per period using a three mix types of dentifrice and to investigate dental diseases preventive effects depending on gingivitis reducing effect of dentifrice through a clinical experiment. Methods: This study targeted adult females and males with mild to moderate gingivitis from age 20 to 60. The Calculus index, Papillary Marginal Attached Gingival (PMA) index, Gingival index, Patient Hygiene Performance (PHP) index, and Plaque index were measured at pre-experiment and at 1, 2, 4 weeks post experiment. Results: The PMA, Gingival index, PHP index, plaque index of experimentla group decreased after 4 weeks (p<0.05). Conclusions: A three mix types of dentifrice for relieving tooth sensitivity was verified to be effective in removing dental plaque and reducing gingivitis.
The purpose of this study was improving the rheology properties of dentifrice by finding optimum binders polymer system which consists of carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), carbomer, and Mg/Al silicate. Response surface methodology (RSM) was employed to investigate the correlation between polymers and rheological properties of dentifrice and to optimize responses. Rheological properties were measured with oscillatory rheometer. As a result, it was identified that gel strength and yield stress were dependent on contents of CMC and carbomer and CMC caused long stringiness of dentifrice. And springness of dentifrice was dependent on contents of CMC and Mg/Al silicate. Optimum components proportion of polymers and silicate were obtained by responses optimization process. According to determined optimum components proportion, it was possible to observe a dentifrice with improved rheological properties.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the non-enzymatic antioxidants stabilities in dentifrices by ascorbic acid and tocopherol according to the chemical condition. Methods: For the analysis of two antioxidants, HPLC UV detector system was used. HPLC was performed using sodium sulfate, acetonitrile(ACN), methanol(MeOH) and measuring absorbance at 240-295 nm. To confirm general pH reaction of two compounds, buffer solution was prepared for the analysis. The dentifrice was titrated by pH so as to examine the change of elapsed time in dentifrice. Linearity of calibration curve of two antioxidants was measured. Results: Each compound showed good linearity at optimized wavelength as well as showing good precision. General pH reaction of two antioxidants was examined. Ascorbic acid showed the highest residue(63.23%) at pH 10 and the lowest residue(2.77%) at pH 4. Tocopherol showed the highest residue(55.70%) at pH 7 and the lowest residue(3.31%) at pH 4. As a result of changing elapsed time of antioxidants in dentifrice by pH, components were remained stably at low temperature($39.2^{\circ}F$) and pH 7. Conclusions: It is necessary to keep dentifrice including ascorbic acid and tocopherol, and non-enzymatic antioxidants at pH 7 and low temperature for improving chemical stability.
The purpose of this study was to examine the toothbrushing behavior of the citizens, their use of dentifrice, awareness of the importance of dentifrice purchase and consciousness of dentifrice containing the extract of Chamaecyparis obtusa in the city of Gwangju. It's basically meant to provide some informations on the development of oral health supplies involving dentifrice containing the extract of Chamaecyparis obtusa in that city in an effort to help the city serve as a hub of the dental industry. The subjects in this study were the selected citizens in the city of Gwangju. As a result of analyzing their awareness of the importance of the considerations for the purchase and use of dentifrice, they gave 68.2% overall. They gave the highest marks of 83.3% to the importance of effect. As for the importance of each item, they gave the highest marks of 85.1% to the importance of the prevention of dental caries. Concerning differences in awareness of the importance of the external purchase factors according to age, every age group placed the most importance on inspection by the certification authorities except for those who were in their 40s and 60s, and the respondents who were in their 40s and 60s attached more importance to price than the other items. Regarding differences in awareness of the importance of effectiveness according to age, those who were under the age of 20 gave the highest marks of 79.8% to the importance of dental-caries prevention and whitening effects. As a result of asking them whether they had an intention to use dentifrice containing the extract of Chamaecyparis obtusa if this dentifrice would be developed, 54.6% replied they had the intention. When they were asked another question whether they thought this dentifrice would have an effect on oral health, 55.1% answered they thought so. 33.8% expected this dentifrice to have a primary effect on the prevention of dental caries. Given the findings of the study, full-scale R&D efforts should be directed into the development of dentifrice containing the extract of chamaecyparis obtusa in the future.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to examine the amount of daily fluoride intake among children using fluoride-containing dentifrice in an effort to pave the way for the selection of criteria for the development of safe dentifrice for different age groups to make a contribution to children's oral health. Methods : This study was implemented over approximately six months from May to October 2008 by recruiting subjects, asking their consent, conducting a survey, collecting samples and analyzing the collected data. The subjects in this study were preschool residents in Seoul and Gyeonggi province, who were at the western age of 2 to 5. The amount of fluoride withdrawn from their one-time toothbrushing was measured in two different ways. One was by using HMDS-facilitated modified diffusion method and fluoride ion electrode, and the other was by applying ion chromatography without the diffusion procedure. Results : The fluoride intake accounted for $46.5{\pm}19.1$ percent of the amount of fluoride used, and that percentage was statistically significantly different according to age(p<0.01). The one-time fluoride intake from dentifrice per weight(kg) was a mean of $0.009{\pm}0.006mg$. As a result of multiplying this amount by daily toothbrushing frequency, the daily fluoride intake from dentifrice per weight(kg) appeared to be $0.023{\pm}0.016mg$ on average. There was a large difference among the children in that regard, since that ranged from a low of 0.003mg to a high of 0.070mg. And age made a statistically significant difference to that(p<0.01). Conclusions : The above-mentioned findings of the study showed that the children's daily fluoride intake from dentifrice per weight was lower than the recommended daily fluoride intake from diets per weight for young children aged 1 to 12(0.05-0.07mg). However, there was a great disparity among the children in that aspect, and they are likely to take more fluoride from other things as well. Therefore it is required to prepare separate criteria for preschool and school-aged children.
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of dentifrice containing 0.1% extracts of garlic on dental plaque and gingivitis in a double blind and crossover clinical studies in 33 healthy adults aged from 20 to 22 years who provided a consent for their participation. Oral examination was performed through clinical periods and on day of baseline, 6, 13, 19, 25 days plaque index and gingival index were scored by Turesky' modified index and L$\ddot{o}$e & Silness index. After 12, 19, 25 days use of their respective dentifrices, statistically decreases of plaque index, gingival index were shown in both the experimental and the control group, respectively, Experimental group exhibited significantly the lower plaque levels and the higher levels of gingival health by the use of the dentifrices contained extract of garlic from 12 days compare with control group(p<0.05). The degree of decrease was more significant on gingivitis level of the experimental group than the control group(p <0.05). This result indicate that the use of dentifrice containing extract of garlic has a positve effect in preventing plaque and gingivitis and treating periodontal diseases.
The purpose of this study was to examine the use of dentifrice among children in a bid to provide information on dentifrice including its function to children's parents, the major consumers of dentifrice for child. And it's additionally meant to offer useful information on the production of toothpaste for kid. The subjects in this study were parents with children, who dwelled in Seoul and Gyeonggi province. After a self-administered survey was conducted for about three months from May to July 2007 to gather data on their use of dentifrice for child, a comparative analysis was implemented. The findings of the study were as follows: 1. Concerning the state of the use of their children's dentifrice, the largest number of the children(58.1%) started to use toothpaste at the age of one or down, and the most common first toothpaste they used was dentifrice for preschooler(86.8%). As for whether to use fluoride-containing toothpaste, the largest group of the parents(58.1%) gave an affirmative answer. Regarding the form of the toothpaste in use, the majority of their children used toothpaste of cream type(86.2%). The greatest group of the children used the amount of toothpaste that was as large as the three-tenths or four-tenths of the bristles(35.9%). 2. As for the state of the use of dentifrice for kid, the greatest group used that kind of toothpaste(81.4%). In the event of those who didn't use it, the last time when their children used toothpaste for kid was when they were at the western age of 3(33.9%) and 4(33.9%). Concerning the reason why they replaced toothpaste for kid with one for adult, the largest group of the parents did that on their own judgment(58.1%). As to the right time for replacing toothpaste for kid by one for adult, the greatest group considered it advisable for children to start using toothpaste for adult at the western age of 4 or 5(43.2%). 3. In relation to the state of the purchase of toothpaste for their children, the largest group was under the moderate influence of the children when they bought it(45.2%). The greatest group attached importance to the ingredients of toothpaste(41.6%), and the most preferred ingredient was fluoride(56.3%). 53.0 percent took consideration on the content of ingredients or the instructions. 4. In regard to priorities for the choice of toothpaste for their children, they gave top priority to brand(16.7%), followed by quality(14.6%) and ingredients(13.5%). The age of the parents made a statistically significant difference to the children's age when they started using toothpaste, and how they started to do that and whether they used fluoride-containing toothpaste were statistically significantly different according to that as well(p < 0.01). In regard to the impact of the occupation of the parents, the use of fluoride-containing toothpaste was more common among the stay-at-home mothers(p < 0.01).
The authors have studied the 8 weeks clinical experiment on 34 dental patients of age 20s for control group and 32 for experimental 1 group(Paste Type Dentifrice with Bamboo Salt, Chitosan and Powder of Pine Needles and Leaves of Bamboo.) and 32 for experimental 2 group(Powder Type Dentifrice with Bamboo Salt, Chitosan and Powder of Pine Needles and Leaves of Bamboo), in order to find out the effect of plaque removal, prevention of calculus and stain formation. and Gingival effect. The obtained results are as following. 1. Plaque removal effect was the similar level on group 1 and on group 2 as control group. 2. For prevention of calculus formation, there was a little bit better on group 1 at 8 weeks, and for prevention of stain formation, it revealed more or less difference between on group 1, group 2 and control group at 8 weeks. 3. on PMA index, it revealed the significantly differences between group 1, group 2 and the control group at 8 weeks(p<0.05), so it is estimated that there might be signified for gingival subside effect by use of dentifrice with Bamboo Salt, Chitosan and Powder of Pine Needles and Leaves Bamboo.
