Purpose: The aim of this research was to investigate difference in shear bond strengths of full-contour zirconia layered with porcelain. Methods: Disk-shaped (diameter: 12.0 mm; height: 3.0 mm) zirconia were randomly divided into six groups according to the surface conditioning method to be applied (N=90, n=15 per group): group 1-contol group(ZC); group 2-airborne particle abrasion with $50-{\mu}m\;Al_2O_3(5A)$; group $3-50-{\mu}m\;Al_2O_3$ + liner(5AL), group $4-110-{\mu}m\;Al_2O_3(1A)$; group $5-110-{\mu}m\;Al_2O_3$ + liner(1AL); group 6-liner(LC). On each block, zirconia porcelain was build up according to manufacturer's instructions. All samples were fixed with measuring jigs and shear bond strength were measured with Universal testing machine. Collected data were analyzed using SPSS(Statistical Package for Social Sciences) Win 12.0 statistics program. Results: LC showed the highest value($29.92{\pm}2.55$ MPa) and ZC showed the lowest value($13.22{\pm}1.37$ MPa). Zirconia liner and Alumina oxide groups was significantly higher shear bond strength than control(p<0.05). 5A (without liner $22.18{\pm}2.37$, with liner $22.84{\pm}1.74$ MPa) was higher shear bond strength than $110{\mu}m$ (without liner $20.18{\pm}2.38$, with $20.71{\pm}2.67$). Conclusion: Surface treatments may have advantage in bond strength improvement for full-contour zirconia layered with porcelain.
PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to compare the surface roughness, phase transformation, and surface topography of dental zirconia with three different yttrium oxide compositions under same grinding and polishing conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Three zirconia disks (IPS e.max ZirCAD LT, MT, MT multi, Ivoclar Vivadent AG, Schaan, Liechtenstein) were selected for experimental materials. Sixty-nine bar-shaped specimens were fabricated as 12.0 × 6.0 × 4.0 mm using a milling machine and glazing was conducted on 12.0 × 6.0 mm surface by same operator. With a custom polishing device, 12.0 × 6.0 mm surfaces were polished under same condition. Surface roughness (Ra[㎛]) was measured before grinding (C), after grinding (G), and at every 3 steps of polishing (P1, P2, P3). X-ray diffraction and FE-SEM observation was conducted before grinding, after grinding, and after fine polishing (P3). Statistical analysis of surface roughness was performed using Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney-U test was used as a post hoc test (α = .05). RESULTS. There were no significant differences of surface roughness between LT, MT, and MM groups. In LT, MT, and MM groups, P3 groups showed significantly lower surface roughness than C groups. X-ray diffraction showed grinding and polishing didn't lead to phase transformation on zirconia surface. In FE-SEM images, growths in grain size of zirconia were observed as yttrium oxide composition increases. CONCLUSION. Polished zirconia surface showed clinically acceptable surface roughness, but difference in yttrium oxide composition had no significant influence on the surface roughness. Therefore, in clinical situation, zirconia polishing burs could be used regardless of yttrium oxide composition.
Purpose : The purpose of this study was to compare the marginal fit of monolithic zirconia restorations fabricated form the conventional and the digital impression technique. Materials and methods : Ten patients were restored with monolithic zirconia restorations fabricated from the digital and the conventional impression technique. Before definitive insertion, silicone replicas were produced from all twenty crowns. The silicone replicas were cut in three sections; each section was evaluated at two points. The measurement was carried out by using a measuring microscope (Olympus BX 51) and I-Solution. Data from the silicone replica scores were analyzed by Shapiro-Wilk test for normal distribution and the t-test for equality of two population's mean. All tests were performed with ${\alpha}-level$ of 0.05. Results : The average marginal gaps of monolithic zirconia restorations were $133.81{\pm}36.46{\mu}m$ for the conventional impression technique, $90.07{\pm}9.47{\mu}m$ for the digital impression technique. No statistical differences were found between the two impression techniques Conclusion : Both prostheses presented clinically acceptable results with comparing the marginal fit.
Purpose: This study was to assess the effect of surface and heat treatment on the bond strength of veneering ceramics to zirconia. Methods: The specimens were divided into 7 groups according to surface treatment and heat treatment conditions prior to porcelain application. ten specimens from each group were subjected to a 3-point flexural test. In addition the influence of surface and heat treatment on surface roughness values and phase transformation of zirconia was evaluated. Statistical analysis was performed with one-way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey's test. Results: Bond strength ranged from $20.67{\pm}3.13MPa$ to $32.69{\pm}4.52$. Bond strength of surface treatment group was lower than that of control group but only $Al_2O_3$ sandblasting group was significant difference. Bond strength of heat treatment group was higher than that of surface treatment group but there was no statistical significance. Conclusion: Bond strength of veneering ceramics to zirconia was affected by surface and heat treatment.
PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to identify the effects of three aesthetic restorative materials on the wear between tooth and restoration by a pin-on-disk manner. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Six aesthetic restorative materials were used to prepare disk specimens for wear test, which were Lava Zirconia as zirconia group, Vintage MP and Cerabien ZR as veneering porcelain group, Gradia Direct microhybrid composite containing prepolymerized fillers, Filtek Z250 microhybrid composite containing zirconia glass and colloidal silica particles, and Filtek Z350 nanocomposite as composite resin group. Vertical loss of the worn cusp, change of the surface roughness of the restoration materials, and the surface topography were investigated after wear test under 9.8-N contact load. RESULTS. The porcelain groups (Vintage MP and Cerabien ZR) caused the largest vertical loss of teeth when compared with those of the composite resin and zirconia groups, and Filtek Z250 microhybrid composite results in the second-largest vertical loss of teeth. The surface of Filtek Z350 nanocomposite was deeply worn out, but visible wear on the surface of the zirconia and Gradia Direct microhybrid composite was not observed. When the zirconia surface was roughened by sand-blasting, vertical loss of teeth considerably increased when compared with that in the case of fine polished zirconia. CONCLUSION. It was identified that microhybrid composite resin containing a prepolymerized filler and zirconia with reduced surface roughness by polishing were the most desirable restorative materials among the tested materials to prevent the two-body wear between aesthetic restorative material and tooth.

Purpose: Several parameters have been described for determining the success or failure of dental implants. The surface properties of transgingival implant components have had a great impact on the long-term success of dental implants. The purpose of this study was to compare the tendency of two periodontal pathogens to adhere to and colonize zirconia abutments and titanium alloys both in hard surfaces and soft tissues. Methods: Twelve patients participated in this study. Three months after implant placement, the abutments were connected. Five weeks following the abutment connections, the abutments were removed, probing depth measurements were recorded, and gingival biopsies were performed. The abutments and gingival biopsies taken from the buccal gingiva were analyzed using real-time polymerase chain reaction to compare the DNA copy numbers of Aggregatibacter actinomycetemcomitans, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and total bacteria. The surface free energy of the abutments was calculated using the sessile water drop method before replacement. Data analyses used the Mann Whitney U-test, and P-values below 0.05 find statistical significance. Results: The present study showed no statistically significant differences between the DNA copy numbers of A. actinomycetemcomitans, P. gingivalis, and total bacteria for both the titanium and zirconia abutments and the biopsies taken from their buccal gingiva. The differences between the free surface energy of the abutments had no influence on the microbiological findings. Conclusions: Zirconia surfaces have comparable properties to titanium alloy surfaces and may be suitable and safe materials for the long-term success of dental implants.

PURPOSE. This study investigated the effect of amount of thickness reduction on color and translucency of dental monolithic zirconia ceramics. MATERIALS AND METHODS. One-hundred sixty-five monolithic zirconia specimens ($16.3mm{\times}16.3mm{\times}2.0mm$) were divided into 5 groups (Group I to V) according to the number of A2-coloring liquid applications. Each group was then divided into 11 subgroups by reducing the thickness up to 1.0 mm in 0.1-mm increments (Subgroup 0 to 10, n=3). Colors and spectral distributions were measured according to CIELAB on a reflection spectrophotometer. All measurements were performed on five different areas of each specimen. Color difference (${\Delta}E^*{^_{ab}}$) and translucency parameter (TP) were calculated. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and multiple comparison $Scheff{\acute{e}}$ test (${\alpha}=.05$). RESULTS. There were significant differences in CIE $L^*$ between Subgroup 0 and other subgroups in all groups. CIE $a^*$ increased (0.52<$R^2$<0.73), while CIE $b^*$ decreased (0.00<$R^2$<0.74) in all groups with increasing thickness reduction. Perceptible color differences (${\Delta}E^*{^_{ab}}$>3.7) were obtained between Subgroup 0 and other subgroups. TP values generally increased as the thickness reduction increased in all groups ($R^2$>0.89, P<.001). CONCLUSION. Increasing thickness reduction reduces lightness and increases a reddish, bluish appearance, and translucency of monolithic zirconia ceramics.
Purpose: This study examined the effect of wettability of gypsum materials and rubber impression material on the marginal fitness of zirconia copings. Methods: Three commercially available gypsum materials(Fugirock EP, Snow Rock, Tuff Rock) and three zirconia blocks(iJAM Emerald, LUXEN Smile block, ICE Zirkon transluzent) were studied. The zirconia copings were fabricated by using dental CAD/CAM system. Contact angles on the impression materials were measured with contact angle measuring device. Silicone replica method was used to measure the marginal fitness and cutting was performed on the bucco-lingual and mesio-distal sides. It were observed with a stereomicroscope at °ø40 magnification. The data were statistically analyzed with One-way ANOVA. Results: Mean values of contact angles were $58.3{\pm}0.7^{\circ}$ for Tuff Rock, $77.5{\pm}0.5^{\circ}$ for Fugirock EP and $87.8{\pm}0.5^{\circ}$ for Snow Rock and the difference between them was statistically significant(p<0.05). The smallest values of marginal fitness for the JF groups were $30.7{\pm}3.0{\mu}m$ for bucco-lingual direction, $29.3{\pm}3.0{\mu}m$ for mesio-distal direction. One-way ANOVA showed statistically significant difference between groups for marginal fitness(p<0.05). Conclusion: Tuff rock gypsum material had superior wettability to others. The mean marginal fitness of the Tuff rock gypsum material group were significantly better than other groups. Thus they can be also expected to show clinically satisfactory marginal fitness.
Purpose: This study aimed to analyze the stress distribution and deformation in implant abutments made from titanium (Ti-6Al-4V), zirconia, and polyetheretherketone (PEEK), including their screws and fixtures, under various loading conditions using finite element analysis (FEA). Methods: Three-dimensional models of the mandible with implant abutments were created using Siemens NX software (NX10.0.0.24, Siemens). FEA was conducted using Abaqus to simulate occlusal loads and assess stress distribution and deformation. Material properties such as Young's modulus and Poisson's ratio were assigned to each component based on literature and experimental data. Results: The FEA results revealed distinct stress distribution patterns among the materials. Titanium alloy abutments exhibited the highest stress resistance and the most uniform stress distribution, making them highly suitable for long-term stability. Zirconia abutments showed strong mechanical properties with higher stress concentration, indicating potential vulnerability to fracture despite their aesthetic advantages. PEEK abutments demonstrated the least stress resistance and higher deformation compared to other abutment materials, but offered superior shock absorption, though they posed a higher risk of mechanical failure under high load conditions. Conclusion: The study emphasizes the importance of selecting appropriate materials for dental implants. Titanium offers durability and uniform stress distribution, making it highly suitable for long-term stability. Zirconia provides aesthetic benefits but has a higher risk of fracture compared to titanium. PEEK excels in shock absorption but has a higher risk of mechanical failure compared to both titanium and zirconia. These insights can guide improved implant designs and material choices for various clinical needs.

PURPOSE. To measure the surface loss of dental restorative zirconia and the short-term bond strength between an indirect composite resin (ICR) and zirconia ceramic after various sandblasting processes. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Three hundred zirconia bars were randomly divided into 25 groups according to the type of sandblasting performed with pressures of 0.1, 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6 MPa, sandblasting times of 7, 14 and 21 seconds, and alumina powder sizes of 50 and $110{\mu}m$. The control group did not receive sandblasting. The volume loss and height loss on zirconia surface after sandblasting and the shear bond strength (SBS) between the sandblasted zirconia and ICR after 24-h immersion were measured for each group using multivariate analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Least Significance Difference (LSD) test (${\alpha}$=.05). After sandblasting, the failure modes of the ICR/zirconia surfaces were observed using scanning electron microscopy. RESULTS. The volume loss and height loss were increased with higher sandblasting pressure and longer sandblasting treatment, but they decreased with larger powder size. SBS was significantly increased by increasing the sandblasting time from 7 seconds to 14 seconds and from 14 seconds to 21 seconds, as well as increasing the size of alumina powder from $50{\mu}m$ to $110{\mu}m$. SBS was significantly increased from 0.1 MPa to 0.2 MPa according to the size of alumina powder. However, the SBSs were not significantly different with the sandblasting pressure of 0.2, 0.4 and 0.6 MPa. The possibilities of the combination of both adhesive failure and cohesive failure within the ICR were higher with the increases in bonding strength. CONCLUSION. Based on the findings of this study, sandblasting with alumina particles at 0.2 MPa, 21 seconds and the powder size of $110{\mu}m$ is recommended for dental applications to improve the bonding between zirconia core and ICR.
