Dentist-patient communication has long been recognized as an important part of dental care. It has many positive outcomes, including reducing patient dental anxiety and increasing patient satisfaction and patient compliance. Above all, the need to communicate through conversation with dentist must be perceived as a basic dental patient's need for good clinical outcomes. In the future, increasing geriatric dental patients will pose challenges to dental profession. Factors influencing dentist-geriatric patient communication should be researched and relevant techniques should be shared among dentists.

Pain and pain control are important to the dental profession because the general perception of the public is that dental treatment and pain go hand in hand. Successful dental treatment requires that the source of pain be detected. If the origin of pain is not found, inappropriate dental care and, ultimately, extraction may result. Pain experienced before, during, or after endodontic therapy is a serious concern to both patients and endodontists, and the variability of discomfort presents a challenge in terms of diagnostic methods, endodontic therapy, and endodontic knowledge. This review will help clinicians understand the basic neurophysiology of pulpal pain and other painful conditions of the dental pulp that are not well understood.

We had our share of success in the dental industry in 2009, but we also had our bits of problems. I regret that our still unsolved bits of problems were some of the more important issues in dentistry. We have tried our best with passion, but we faced many limitations. I hope in expectation, that we analyze these problems so that we may overcome them. I hope that the Korean Dental Association be equipped with valid evidence in decision making procedures corresponding to social justice, heighten our dentists pride by respecting the law and fulfill our duty as national oral health caretakers. The Korean Dental Association claims the goal as ${\AE}$Your Dentist, World Best, World Best Dentist with the people$^{\circ}\phi$ and the association should establish related policies and should be able to execute them. Also the association should be able to manage and execute the duties presented in the association regulations, thus, the importance of duty division according to profession must be emphasized.

연구배경: 본 연구의 목적은 직업정보를 얻는 경로에 따라 치과위생사 이미지 형성에 어떠한 차이가 있는지를 파악하고, 치과위생사에 대한 올바른 인식과 직업 이미지 긍정화의 토대를 마련하고자 한다. 연구방법: 수도권 지역의 대입 준비생 305명을 대상으로 설문지를 배부하였다. 설문 내용은 일반적 특성(3문항), 경로 관련 문항(3문항), 치과위생사 이미지 관련 문항(21문항), 앱 관련 문항(2문항), 진학 관련 문항(5문항), 총 34문항으로 작성되었다. 일반적 특성, 인식 경로 및 진학 여부에 따른 치과위생사의 이미지는 Mann-Whitney의 U 검정, kruskal-wallis 검정으로 분석하였다. 연구결과: 연구 대상자 전체를 대상으로 치과위생사에 대한 전체 이미지는 3.75점으로 나타났고, 개인적 이미지 (4.18점)가 가장 높게 나타났으며, 사회적 이미지(3.20점)가 가장 낮았다. 치과위생사 인식경로에 따른 치과위생사 전체 이미지는 '온라인'(3.88점)이 높게 나타났고, 전체 이미지, 개인적, 업무적 이미지에서 집단 간 통계적으로 유의한 차이가 나타났다(p<0.05). 정보획득 경로에 따른 치과위생사 전체 이미지는 '오프라인'(3.87점)이 높게 나타났으며, 세부 영역 중 개인적 이미지에서만 집단 간 통계적인 유의한 차이를 보였다. 진학 여부에 따른 치과위생사 전체 이미지는 '진학(4.00점)'이 '비진학(3.64점)'보다 높았고, 사회적 이미지를 제외한 모든 영역에서 통계적으로 유의하였다(p<0.05). 결론: 온라인 경로를 효율적으로 활용하면 보다 많은 사람들에게 치과위생사의 중요성과 전문성을 알릴 수 있을 것으로 생각되며, 이를 통해 구강건강 증진에 기여하는 치과위생사의 역할을 올바르게 인식하고, 직업의 가치를 홍보하고 교육함으로써 이미지 향상에 도움이 될 것으로 생각된다.

치과위생사의 전문직 자아개념의 중요성을 인식하게 하고, 전문직 자아개념 정립과 치위생직 전문직 발전에 도움이 되기 위한 기초 자료를 제공하고자 전라북도 전주시 치과진료기관에 종사하는 110명의 치과위생사를 대상으로 2002년 3월 11일부터 3월 25일까지 설문조사를 실시하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 일반적 특성에 따른 전문직 자아개념 분석결과 종교(p<.05)와 최종학력(p<.01)에서 유의한 차이가 나타났다. 2. 일반적 특성에 따른 업무수행 분석결과 종교에서 유의한 차이가 나타났다(p<.05). 3. 전문직 자아개념과 업무수행과의 상관관계는 순상관성(F=.663, p<.001)을 보여 자아개념이 높을수록 업무수행 정도가 높은 것으로 나타났다. 1) 전문직 자아개념은 업무수행 영역의 독자적업무(F=.683, p<.001), 대인관계업무(F=.648, p<.001), 일반관리업무(F=.573, p<.001), 협동적업무(F=.478, p<.001)순으로 모두 높은 상관성을 보였다. 2) 업무수행은 전문직 자아개념 영역의 전문적 실무(F=.637, p<.001)와 만족감(F=.337, p=.000)에서 높은 상관성을 보였다. 이상의 연구결과를 근거로 하여 다음과 같이 제언하고자 한다. 첫째, 치과위생사의 전문직 자아개념과 업무수행 정도를 높이기 위해 전문성 신장을 위한 교육의 기회가 확대, 유지되어야한다. 둘째, 치과위생사의 전문직 자아개념과 업무수행에 영향을 주는 요인을 규명하기 위한 계속적인 연구가 이루어져야한다. 연구의 제한점으로는 전주시 치과의료기관에 국한된 것이므로 연구결과를 확대 해석하는데 신중을 기해야 하고 설문도구 작성에 있어 주로 간호사를 중심으로 개발된 문항을 사용하였기 때문에 치과위생사에 적합한 표준문항이 없어 타당도에 문제가 있을 수 있다.

Background: The aim of this study was to identify the bibliographic characteristics and research trends of the literature published on the profession of dental hygiene to provide basic data for research, education, and intervention program development for the establishment of healthy professionalism among dental hygienists and dental hygienist students. Methods: A literature search was conducted through four databases. They were looked up using the terms "dental hygiene" and "professional." Finally, 46 research papers that meet the selection criteria were selected for analysis. Results: From 2004 to 2022, 46 articles were published. Except for key words related to subjects and tools, key words ranked at the top were job satisfaction, self-esteem, self-leadership, and stress. Five tools of professionalism-professional self-concept, professional intuition, professional identity, and a professional values scale -were used in the study. Conclusion: Considering the social perception of dental hygienists as professionals and the reality of dental hygiene that is carrying out the process of professionalization, efforts are needed to identify and promote beliefs and attitudes toward professionals such as professionalism and professional identity.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to develop and validate a Korean-adapted version of the job expectations scale for dental hygienists. Methods: To achieve this goal, a comprehensive methodology was employed, including frequency analysis, exploratory factor analysis (maximum likelihood, direct oblimin rotation), confirmatory factor analysis, Cronbach's α reliability, independent t-test, and one-way ANOVA (Duncan post-hoc test) were performed. Results: The Korean version of job expectations scale for dental hygienists comprised 21 items in the personal domain and 5 items in the social domain. The scale demonstrated high construct validity, convergent validity, discriminant validity, and reliability were found. While dental hygienists were found to have higher expectations in the their personal domain than the social domain, expectations in the social domain were higher among male hygienists, those with a bachelor's degree or higher, those in regular permanent employment, and those working in hospital-level or higher facilities. Conclusions: Job expectations is a more comprehensive construct than job roles or professional identity. We anticipate that the instrument will be widely used to analyze trends in job expectations in response to changes in societal values regarding to dental hygienists, the gap between realities and ideals within the dental hygiene profession, and policy considerations.

The Korean Institute of Dental Education and Evaluation (KIDEE) was established in 2007 to provide the quality assurance in dental education. The KIDEE has been recognized by The Ministry of Education from Jan. 2015 for 5 years. KIDEE had accredited basic dental education programs of all 11 Korean dental schools. The dental accreditation system was introduced to encourage the improvement for dental schools, to ensure the quality of dental practice and most of all, to establish an internationally compatible system of evaluation and accreditation. The accreditation system in Korea is supported by voluntary service of many dental professionals and contribute to improve the quality of dental education program in all institutions. The accreditation by KIDEE let the students and the dentists be taught with assured education program and the all Koreans be cared by the qualified dentists. A quality education system thus provides a sufficient number of qualified dental health professionals to meet the workforce needs of the nation. Ultimately, this should result in quality oral health care for the public. Finally, by specifying the competencies of graduates, the standards will define the scope of dental practice. This may serve to define the profession of dentistry and differentiate it from other health professions, or to differentiate among the specialties in dentistry in the case of advanced dental education programs.

Objectives: This study presents the basic data necessary to explore the methods used of Korean dental hygienists to resolve oral health inequalities in Korea via reviewing the professionalization trend of American dental hygienists. Methods: The supervision levels of American dental hygienists, and system of dental therapists were analyzed using the data published by the relevant associations. Results: In America, dental hygienists help address oral health inequalities. However, due to limitations in the supervision levels and scope of practice of dental hygienists, the autonomy of dental hygienists was expanded, and mid-level practitioner were employed. The autonomy for dental hygiene practice was higher in public than in private in America. Some states have introduced dental therapists as mid-level practitioners. Their practice settings have limitations such as serving low-income, uninsured, and underserved patients or serving in a dental health professional shortage area. Conclusions: It is necessary to expand the autonomy of dental hygienists based on their profession. In particular, it is suggested that they start with the low-risk level practices. Further, it is necessary to introduce a dental hygiene specialist system specialized for fields with high social demands.

2013년, 치과위생사 역사의 100주년을 맞이하였다. 1913년, Dr. Fones가 Bridgeport Junior College에 2년 과정의 치위생교육프로그램을 개설하며, 구강간호가 아닌 구강질환의 예방과 보건학을 전문으로 하는 '치과위생사' 라는 직종명칭을 사용한 것이 그 시초다. 미국에서 최초로 치과위생사 제도를 최초로 도입한 만큼, 미국치과위생사의 발전과정을 되짚어 보는 것은 국제적인 치위생계 발전과정을 확인하고, 각국의 제도를 비교할 수 있는 근간이 될 것이다. 이 연구는 지난 100년간 미국치과위생사가 전문직 역할을 수립해 나가는 과정을 '치과위생사 조직의 발전과정', '치위생학 교육제도의 발전과정', '치과위생사 면허 및 관련 자격제도의 발전과정', '치과위생사 관련 법령과 윤리' 및 '미국치과위생사의 역할 및 업무범위의 발전과정' 요건에 따라 고찰하는 것이다. 미국치과위생사는 전문직 요건을 형성하고 있고 사회적 분위기 역시 전문직으로 인식하고 있다. 이에 미국치과위생사가 오늘날의 모습으로 전문직화해 온 과정과 그 특징을 규명하는 데 연구목적을 두고, 이 목적을 달성하기 위해 요건 별 문헌자료를 수집하고 분석하였다.
