  • This study was performed to examine the effect of repeated firing on porcelain color stability. Sixty sepcimens of generally uniform size and shape(9.7 12mm)were prepared using the manufactorer's specifications and among them 50 specimens that showed no defect after firing procedure were selected. All samples, abraded with sandpaper disc, ultrasonically cleaned, and air fired to amedium glaze were devided into 10 groups according to the number of repeated firing and, upon completion, mounted on a 13 by 16cm board. 30 persons(five dentists, ten dental techanicians, and fiftheen students) were asked to compare the samples for variations, in hue, chroma and value under natural and artificial light. The results were as follows:(1) There were no color change detected in the first four firings.(2) Slight color change were noticed in subsequent firings(ie: greater decreases in value with slight increases In chroam)(3) However, the hue remained constant in all 10 groups after repeated firings.

  • Casting alloys, both precious and non-precious, were by heat in order to observe the change in HB and the results were : 1. The hard treatment showed 1.4 - 1.5 times as high as the soft treatment in HB. 2. The experiment shows that Au-Pt should be contained more than 75% to prevent color change. 3. Cu by hard teatment played the greatect part in creasing the solidity of Ag-Cu alloy. 4. Casting Co-Cr alloys showed little difference of HB in heat treatment.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate temperature change occurred in enamel, dentin and pulp due to the heat from cavity prepration with laser. We made three models had different cavity depth: cavity depth of model A was 3.52mm, model B was 2.32mm, model C was 1.16mm. We irradiated cavity base with thermal capacity of $30J,100J,300J/cm^2s$ during few seconds and studied the change of temperature in tooth during 10 seconds, and estimated change of thermal capacity by different irradiated site and exposure time. At $300J/cm^2$ irradiation for 2 seconds, the temperature of irradiated surface was elevated fast according to irradiated thermal energy during 1 second. In proportion to continuous exposure time, temperature elevated slowly. The surface temperature was $1370^{\circ}C$. After discontinue of thermal irradiation, the heat of irradiated surface was diffused in dentin and pulp and the greatest temperature was made. The greatest temperature was disappeared within 10 seconds The greatest temperature of the inner part of model brought about very severe change by different depth. Temperature in pulp was raised by the greater irradiated energy density and exposure time.

  • Purpose : This study was performed to evaluate the changes of jaw bone density around the dental implant after placement using computed tomography scan (CT-Scan). Materials and Methods : This retrospective study consisted of 30 patients who had lost 1 posterior tooth in maxilla or mandible and installed dental implant. The patients took CT-Scan before and after implant placement. Hounsfield Unit (HU) was measured around the implants and evaluated the difference of HU before and after implant installation. Results : The mean HU of jaw bone was 542.436 HU and 764.9 HU before and after implant placement, respectively (p<0.05). The means HUs for male were 632.3 HU and 932.2 HU and those for female 478.2 HU and 645.5 HU before and after implant placement, respectively (p<0.05). Also, the jaw bone with lower density needed longer period for implant procedure and the increased change of HU of jaw bone was less in the cases which needed longer period for osseointegration. Conclusion : CT-Scan could be used to assess the change of bone density around dental implants. Bone density around dental implant was increased after placement. The increased rate of bone density could be determined by the quality of jaw bone before implant placement.

  • Although x-ray had been used in Dental Clinic and taught as Roentgenology as a part of other lectures, the independent lecture was established at Seoul National University in 1953. The first independent Department was separated from the Department of Oral Surgery at Seoul National University in 1963. Nowadays, there are 6 national and 5 private dental schools in South Korea. Each dental school has a Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology, which fulfills its role in student education and clinical service. What is specially noteworthy is that 8 of the 11 dental schools have changed or will change from the 2+4 year system to 4+4 year system (postgraduate course). The curriculum has also been or is being amended according to this change. Although the contents of courses for Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology are not much different among dental schools, the methods and structure of education are various. We have to do a systematic and comprehensive analysis of the present educational methods and structure of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology and need to seek the new and more suitable ones based on competency.

  • Dental Caries which has high prevalence rate, accounts for majority of dental diseases. Many treatment and preventive treatment has been developed, thereby reducing the prevalence rate, but in our country, fluoridization has not spread widely yet, so prevention has not been done satisfactorily. When dental caries progresses, irreversible damage of tooth structure occurs. In initial dental caries, demineralizing tooth structure can be remineralized, so restorative treatment is unnecessary. In this study, 20 teeth restored with composite resin without fluoride release were used and divided into two groups. Incipient dental caries were artificially made and demineralization procedure was done for 1 and 2 weeks, for each group. Changes in mineral contents around the margins were analysed with confocal laser scanning microscope. The results were as follow. 1. Both total fluorescence of the lesion and average fluorescence of the lesion of remineralized samples decreased compared to demineralizing state. (p<0.01) 2. Confocal laser scanning microscopy can be used in quantitative analysis of mineral change. In result, confocal laser scanning microscopy can be used in quantitative analysis of mineral change and it could be used in many different fields of dentistry in the future.

  • This paper presents the loosening behavior that occurs after the application of an external load to internal and external connection types of dental implants using the finite element method. We use fastening force between an abutment and a fixture to clamp the dental implant system; however, loosening and breakage may occur owing to cyclic external loads. In this study, we considered the initial fastening condition in the pre-load analysis and then investigated the change in stress and contact surface status when applying external loads. After the application of the initial fastening load, we verified that the internal connection-type model exhibited a relatively lower stress distribution than that of the external connection-type one. Moreover, we found that the former model showed a lower stress concentration after the application of the external load. In addition, after the application of this load, we found that the higher the shear load acting on the implant system, the higher the possibility of loosening. The study results showed the change in stress distribution and contact surface according to the connection type of the dental implants and the phenomenon of loosening by cyclic loads. We expect that the results of this study will be useful for the study of reliability and design of dental implant systems.

  • Purpose: This study was performed to evaluate three-dimensional positional change of the condyle using 3D CT after bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (BSSRO) in skeletal class III patients. Patients and methods: Nine patients who underwent BSSRO for mandibular set-back in skeletal class III malocclusion without facial asymmetry were examined. Miniplates were used for the fixation after BSSRO. 3-D CT was taken before, immediately after, and 6 months after undergoing BSSRO. After creating 3D-CT images using V-works $4.0^{TM}$ program, axial plane, coronal plane, & sagittal plane were configured. Three dimensional positional change, from each plane to the condyle, of the nine patients was measured before, immediately after, and 6 months after undergoing BSSRO. Results: 1. The mean value of mandibular set-back for nine mandibular prognathism patients was 7.36 mm (${\pm}\;2.42\;mm$). 2. In the axial view, condyle is rotated inward immediately after BSSRO (p < 0.05), comparing with preoperative but outward 6 months after BSSRO comparing with postoperative (p < 0.05). 3. In the axial view, condyle is moved laterally immediately after BSSRO (p < 0.05), comparing with preoperative but regressed 6 months after BSSRO comparing with preoperative (p > 0.05). 4. In the frontal & coronal view, there is changed immediately after and 6 months after BSSRO, comparing with preoperative but no statistical difference. Conclusion: These results indicate that three-dimensional positional change of the condyle in skeletal class III patients is observed lateral displacement & inward rotation immediate after BSSRO, but the condyle in 6 months after BSSRO tends to regress to preoperative position.

  • Ni-Ti shape memory alloy for dental nerve treatment devices was prepared by adding Mo to Ni-Ti alloy to improve flexibility and fatigue fracture characteristics and simultaneously increase corrosion resistance. Surface properties of the alloy were evaluated. Microstructure analysis of the Ni-Ti-xMo alloy revealed that the amount of needle-like structure increased with increasing Mo content. The shape of the precipitate showed a pattern in which a long needle-like structure gradually disappeared and changed into a small spherical shape. As a result of XRD analysis of the Ni-Ti-xMo alloy, R-phase structure appeared as Mo was added. R-phase and B2 structure were mainly observed. As a result of DSC analysis, phase transformation of the Ti-Ni-Mo alloy showed a two-step phase change of B2-R-B19' transformation with two exothermic peaks and one endothermic peak. As Mo content increased, R-phase formation temperature gradually decreased. As a result of measuring surface hardness of the Ti-Ni-Mo alloy, change in hardness value due to the phase change tended to decrease with increasing Mo content. As a result of the corrosion test, the corrosion potential and pitting potential increased while the current density tended to decrease with increasing Mo content.
