  • Objectives: This study was conducted to assess dental health states of disabled people and analyze association between perception and awareness toward dental health and dental health status. Methods: The survey was performed from June 25 through October 30, 2004. A total of 548 disabled people participated in the study with details of 419 living in eight residential care centers located in Gyeongsangbuk-do and 129 children from a special school and two day-care centers. All subjects underwent oral examination and surveyed through a questionnaire. Parents of 129 children with disabilities were also surveyed through a separate questionnaire. Results: The dental caries experience rate was 82.1% of total 548 subjects. By age, those in their 20s experienced a high rate of dental caries with 87.5%. By educational level, those with a middle school education experienced a high dental caries rate with 91.8% (p<0.05). Of total subjects who experienced dental caries, 78.9% had experience in dental caries treatment. By age, those in their 10s showed a high rate of dental caries treatment with 87.4%(p<0.05). By educational level, those with a high school education showed a high rate of dental caries treatment with 87.7%(p<0.05). Those in residential care centers had a high rate of dental caries treatment with 82.1%, which is significantly higher than 68.8% of those who used day-care centers. A tooth extraction rate was 38.0% of total subjects. Those in their 40s had a higher rate of tooth extraction(p<0.01). Those in residental care centers had a significantly higher rate of extraction with 43.4%, compared with 20.2% of those in day-care centers. Of total subjects, 61.5% had plaque. A high rate of plaque formation was observed in those in their 40s(92.0%), those with a high school education(84.0%) and those with multiple disabilities(77.8%)(p<0.01). Among total subjects, 47.6% maintained healthy periodontal tissue. Those in their 40s and those with multiple disabilities had diseased periodontal tissue(p<0.01). Of 129 disabled children, 43.8% had plaque with parents who were not oral health-conscious while 18.6% had plaque with parents who were oral health-conscious, showing a significant difference(p<0.05) Conclusion: The results of the study suggest the need for educating parents with disabled children about oral health and strengthening programs for oral health for teachers working at special schools and day-care centers.

  • The purpose of study was to compare the caries experience between the mentally retarded(MR) and the normal(N) children and adolescents and to survey the dental visit frequency. preventive dental care, and tooth-brushing behavior of the mentally retarded. Two hundred and fifty MR and two hundred and ten N subjects were selected for the study. 1. The number of teeth which had experienced caries was 3.28 in MR and 4.66 in N. The number of decayed teeth was 2.24 in MR and 1.50 in N. The number of filled teeth was 0.71 in MR and 3.06 in N Filled teeth rate was 19.78% in MR and 58.89% in N The differences between MR and N were all significant(P<0.01). 2. Dental visit frequency of MR was 1.15 per year, and the 51.2% of MR did not visit the dental clinic for the last one year. 38.0% of MR had received the preventive dental care. 3. Toothbrushing frequency per day was 2.16 and the toothbrushing time for 78.3% of MR was less than two minutes. 51.2% of MR brushed their teeth by themselves, 13.3% did with the help of the carers, and 35.5% totally depended on the carers. In conclusion, MR experienced less dental caries than N, had more untreated caries than N, and had need for regular preventive dental care.

  • Background: Occupational injuries cause major health problems, which the developed, developing, and underdeveloped nations worldwide are facing today. The present study aimed to assess dental caries, periodontal health of stone mine workers, and the relationship between wasting diseases and the years of working experience. Methods: The study population comprised 510 men, selected based on the stratified cluster sampling procedure. Clinical oral examinations were carried out, and periodontal disease, dental caries, and wasting diseases were recorded. Results: Workers were in the age group of 17-56 years; the prevalence of dental caries in the workers was found to be 74%, with a mean decayed, missing, filled teeth index of 2.89. A periodontal pocket of more than 6 mm was observed in 6% of the workers. Conclusion: The oral health of mine workers is in a poor state; steps should be taken so as to provide basic medical and dental care facilities.

  • This study compared and analyzed the tooth brushing time per day and dental caries in 1-13-year-old children in the stage of the completion of their permanent teeth based on the 6th primitive at data of objective National Health Nutrition Survey. The results show a meaningful difference between the DMFT and dental caries experience. In particular, the group with a lower toothbrushing rate after lunch generally have a higher incidence of dental caries.

  • The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between salivary flow, salivary buffer capacity, level of mutans streptococci and dental caries experience in Korean dental college students. A total of 81 students of the school of dentistry, Chonbuk national university, mean age of 26.1 years, were subjected to oral examination to establish the DMFT and DMFS according to WHO guidelines. Saliva samples from the students were collected for quantitating stimulated and unstimulated salivary flow rate. Buffering capacity was estimated using a commercial colorimetric strip test, and number of mutans streptococci was determined from stimulated saliva using a strip mutans test. The means of DMFT and DMFS were 6.57 and 12.65, respectively. The stimulated salivary flow rate was correlated with DMFT(${\acute{o}}\;=\;-0.219$) and high levels of salivary mutans streptococci were significantly correlated with higher DMFT and DMFS scores(P<0.05). Level of mutans streptococci was significantly correlated with dental caries experience, in both DMFT and DMFS score, and buffering capacity was inversely correlated to DMFT score. However, unstimulated salivary flow rate was not correlated with caries experience.

  • The purpose of the study was to determine the ability of the caries activity test, 'Cariostat' to identify preschool children with dental caries. The subjects of this study were 76 children of 3 to 5 years of age. Oral examination was carried out to assess the caries experience using a mirror and explorer. In all subjects buccal plaque samples were obtained, incubated, and scored as the manufacturer's instructions for the Cariostat test. Statistical analyses were used with the Crosstabulation. The test group exhibited mean dft index 5.21, while 27.63% of subjects were caries free and had no restorations. The sensitivity of the Cariostat test was found to be 98.8% while the specificity was found to be 19.05% The results showed that caries activity measured by visual reading was highly significant to the Cariostat score and dft index(P<0.001). The Cariostat method has indicated the future possible occurrence of caries. The use of this method is meant to require in the caries prevention program.

  • This study aims to find out the correlation between the number of snack intake frequency by the young Korean and the experience of dental caries by nationwide level, using data of Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey in 2007. participants whose age among 12 to 18 years-old were analyzed for this study. Of 373 total participants in this analysis, 200 were male and 173 were female. The Multiple Logistic Regression Analysis was used to estimate the association between food intake between meals and experience of dental caries. Data were weight-adjusted. The results were evidently found that those who eat between meals more frequently are likely to be linked more closely to the dental caries, in terms of the correlation between property of demography and the experience of disease (OR:2.1, CI:1.1-4.0). Thus, It is to raise the awareness of effect on dental health, regarding a kind of food consumed, an appropriate nutritional education or dietary consultation is required regularly at school.
