  • Electrochemical behaviors of surface modified and MC3T3-E1 cell cultured Ti-30Ta alloys have been investigated using various electrochemical methods. The Ti alloys containing Ta were melted by using a vacuum furnace and then homogenized for 6 hrs at $1000^{\circ}C$. MC3T3-E1 cell culture was performed with MC3T3-E1 mouse osteoblasts for 2 days. The microstructures and corrosion resistance were measured using FE-SEM, XRD, EIS and potentiodynamic test in artificial saliva solution at $36.5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. Ti-Ta alloy showed the martensite structure of ${\alpha}+{\beta}$ phase and micro-structure was changed from lamellar structure to needle-like structure as Ta content increased. Corrosion resistance increased as Ta content increased. Corrosion resistance of cell cultured Ti-Ta alloy increased predominantly in compared with non cell cultured Ti- Ta alloy due to inhibition of the dissolution of metal ion by covered cell. $R_p$ value of MC3T3-E1 cell cultured Ti-40 Ta alloy showed $1.60{\times}10^6{\Omega}cm^2$ which was higher than those of other Ti alloy. Polarization resistance of cell-cultured Ti-Ta alloy increased in compared with non-cell cultured Ti alloy.

  • Materials with differing surfaces have been developed for clinical implant therapy in dentistry and orthopedics. This study was designed to evaluate bone response to titanium alloy containing Ti-32Nb-5Zr with nanostructure, anodic oxidation, heat treatment, and ibandronate coating. Rats were randomly assigned to two groups for implantation of titanium alloy (untreated) as the control group and titanium alloy group coated with ibandronate as the experimental group. Then, the implants were inserted in both tibiae of the rats for four weeks. After implantation, bone implant interface, trabecular microstructure, mechanical fixation was evaluated by histology, micro-computed tomography (${\mu}CT$) and the push-out test, respectively. We found that the anodized, heat-treated and ibandronate-coated titanium alloy triggered pronounced bone implant integration and early bone formation. Ibandronate-coated implants showed elevated values for removal torque and a higher level of BV/TV, trabecular thickness and separation upon analysis with ${\mu}CT$ and mechanical testing. Similarly, higher bone contact and a larger percentage bone area were observed via histology compared to untreated alloy. Furthermore, well coating of ibandronate with alloy was observed by vitro releasing experiment. Our study provided evidences that the coating of bisphosphonate onto the anodized and heat-treated nanostructure of titanium alloy had a positive effect on implant fixation.

  • Objectives : In this study, following the cavity restorations with low copper conventional alloy, high copper admixed one and high copper unicompositional one, which are used the most frequently in a clinical setting at the present, to experiment the time-dependent changes of strength, bubbles were examined. Besides, to examine the detrimental effects of mercury contained in dental amalgam, the amount of mercury release was evaluated. Methods : As dental amalgams which were used herein, [BESTALOY], [Hi-Aristaloy 21] and [Sybraloy] were selected for a low-copper conventional amalgam, a high-copper admixed one and a high-copper unicompositional one in the corresponding order. The formation of bubbles and the weight ratio of mercury release were evaluated using a field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM). Thus, the following results were obtained: Results : 1. The time-dependent amount of mercury release reached a statistical significance in three types of alloys, which was shown in such a descending order as [BESTALOY], [Hi-Aristaloy 21] and [Sybraloy]. 2. A low-copper conventional type, BESTALOY is a cutting type and it was found to have an increased formation of fine bubbles. In the remaining two types, [Hi-Aristaloy 21] (a high-copper admixed alloy) and [Sybraloy] (a high-copper unicompositional alloy), the time-dependent changes in the formation of bubbles was negligible. Conclusions : Accordingly, this type of mercury release from amalgam alloy denotes the difference in the weight ratio of total constituents between after 24 hours and after two weeks. But further studies are warranted to examine the amount of mercury release which is detrimental to human bodies. Besides, a low-copper conventional alloy is a cutting type and it was characterized by the abundant formation of bubbles in a time-dependent manner. This implies that the strength of amalgam is impaired, which should be considered in selecting the appropriate amalgam alloy in a clinical setting.

  • The castability of base metal alloys for dental casting in influenced by burn-out temperature and recent percentage. Burn-out temperatures for casting are set at 200$^{\circ}F$ interval from 1000$^{\circ}F$ to 1800$^{\circ}F$. According to recast metal percent in new cast alloy metal alloys are tested. The results are as followings: 1. In the new alloy(100%), the castability is the most. 2. The burn-out temperature in 1600$\sim$1800$^{\circ}F$, castability of 100% new alloy was more four times than of 50% new alloy plus 50% recast alloy. The using of 50% new alloy and 50% recast alloy, therefore, was unlike in castability. 3. The burn-out temperature in 1600$^{\circ}F$, castability of 100% new alloy was more than four times in soaking 20 minutes, but there was no any difference at 18700$^{\circ}F$. 4. It is investigated that the optimal burn-out temperature is 1600$^{\circ}F$ for the C & B alloy.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of shear bond strength between various percentage of reused dental ceramic alloys and porcelain. One hundred specimens were made of one semiprecious alloy and three nonprecious alloys. Each alloy group was subdevided into five groups according to the additional precentage of new alloy. Group I specimens were made of 100% new alloy and served as the control of the investigation. Group II specimens were made of once-cast alloy with 75% new alloy. Group III specimens were made of once-cast alloy with 50% new alloy. Group IV specimens were made of once-cast alloy with 25% new alloy. Group V specimens were made of 100% recast alloy. Five specimens were made for each group of the alloy combinations. The test specimens were prepared by firing porcelain doughnuts on the alloy rod surface, and invested in dental stone. Bond strengths were measured by Instron universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 0.5mm/min. The fractured surface of metal specimens were examined under the scanning electron microscope. The obtained results were as follows : 1. The shear bond strength of Albabond showed no significant difference between control group and reused alloy group. 2. The shear bond strength of reused alloy groups of nonprecious alloys were lower than that of control groups. 3. The shear bond strength between porcelain and metal in semiprecious alloy was higher than in nonprecious alloys 4. In nonprecious alloys. Rexillium III showed the highest bond strength value and Excelalloy showed the lowest shear bond strength value. 5. Regardless of the type of alloys and additional proportion of new alloys, scanning electron microscope photographs of the fracture surface between alloy and porcelain revealed simillar semiprecious alloy and nonprecious alloys.

  • Using a nickel-chrome casting alloy called 'Rexillium V' which is also available as base metal alloy for dental ceramic crown, 4 types of mixtures(A, B, C, D) with old and new metal were prepared for cyclic casting. The results of cyclic casting can be outlined as follows: 1. For Vickers hardness after casting, specimen A and D tended to have lower hardness in the course of cyclic casting, while specimen B and C tended to higher hardness. 2. The results of X-ray diffraction analysis showed that major crystal phase contained nickelchrome compounds and carbide. 3. The observation results of SEM photographs after cyclic casting show that there was a significant tendency to have similar structures among experimental groups. 4. The results of EDX analysis after cyclic casting showed that there were little differences in chemical composition between parent metal and base metal alloy. Although industrial nickel-chrome cast alloy did not show any significant change in material properties even through cyclic casting over several times, it is recommended that more there be more in-depth studies on how to detect any potential corrosion, discoloration and toxication of dental ceramic crown implanted in patient's oral cavity.

  • This study evaluated the grindability of series of Ti-Cu alloys in order to develop a Ti alloy with better grindability than commercially pure titanium(CP Ti). Experimental Ti-Xwt%Cu alloys(X=2, 5, 10) were made in an argon-arc melting furnace. Slabs of experimental alloys were ground using a SiC abrasive wheel on an electric handpiece at circumferential speed(15000, 30000rpm) by applying a force(250, 300gr). Grindability was evaluated by measuring the amount of metal volume removed after grinding for 2 minutes. Data were compared to those for CP Ti and Ti-6wt%Al-4wt%V alloy. From results, It was observed that the grindability of Ti-Cu alloys increased with an increase in the Cu concentration compared to CP Ti, particularly the 10wt%Cu alloy exhibited the highest grindability at all speeds. By alloying with Cu, the Ti exhibited better grindability at high speed. The continuous precipitation of $Ti_2Cu$ among the ${\alpha}$-matrix grains made this material less ductile and facilitated more effective grinding because small segments more readily formed. The Ti-10wt%Cu alloy has a great potential for use as a dental machining alloy.
