For prevention of ECC, the Korean Academy Of Pediatric Dentistry(KAPD) advocate that Children should be seen as early as 6 months of age after the first tooth erupts, or 12 months of age. Pediatrics have increased access to new mothers and children 6 to 12 months while dentists does not see young children unless there are urgent problems. Therefore, they have an opportunity to impact infant oral health care. This study's purpose was to examine pediatricians' awareness and experience about infant oral health care. For the study, we surveyed of 150 pediatricians in korea. The survey comprised 10 questions related to infant oral health care and the recommended age a child go for their first dental visit. The results were as follows: 1. Most respondents had been referred children to a dentist for treating ECC and more than half of respondents reported that they did not do oral examination in their practice. 2. The majority of surveyed pediatricians are not advising patients to see the dentist by 1 year of age. 3. The surveyed pediatrician's awareness of infant oral health care is insufficient. The oral health education should be reinforced. 4. There is a need for increased infant oral health care education in the medical and dental communities.
The purpose of this study was to survey the knowledge of parents, to prepare basic data for the development of adjusted water fluoridation program. The survey with self-administrated questionnaire was carried out to n 1,418 parents of school-children in Kimje city and then analyzed obtained the results. The data were analysed using the chisquare test. Over all, 58.4 percent of parents has heard about adjusted water fluoridation. 50.1% respondents knew very well the object of water fluoridation program which is implemented to prevent dental caries. The recognition rate of water fluoridation were different according to respondent's education level(p=.000) and income(p=.019). The approval rate of water fluoridation were different according to respondent's education level age level and income(p<.001). The parents had the affirmative opinion for the adjusted water fluoridation was 4.5 times more than the negative opinion. Respondents approving and opposing for the implementation of water fluoridation were 82.3% and 17.7%, respectively. The recognition rate and approval rate of water fluoridation had the affirmative opinion for the adjusted water fluoridation was more than the negative opinion. Respondents approving and opposing for the implementation of water fluoridation were 85.5% and 14.2%, respectively. The parents of school children had affirmative opinion to the adjusted water fluoridation. So for implementation of the water fluoridation, it is required to reinforce education for inhabitants through delivery of right information and various publicity activities.
Statement of problems: The concept of CR has also changed continuously.?In order to find out the factors that affect the centric slide, studies were carried out to compare the forms of wisdom teeth eruption, lateral movement, premature contact in CR, and anterior movement. Research and statistical methods were based on the report by the 1980 Korean dental association. Material and method: In our study, 403 dentists in their twenties and dentistry students who could understand CR and CO (and who did not receive occlusal, orthodontic treatment, without extreme caries and large prosthodontic care) were compared with the 25 year old results. A segment of line parallel to the upper incisor was marked on the lower incisor. When seen laterally, a line perpendicular to the occlusal plane was drawn on the foremost area of the upper incisor. This line was extended to the lower incisor and the two points (points at the lower and upper incisors) were used as reference points for the CO. After guiding the occlusion to the CR, two lines were marked by using the same method that was used for the CO. The point in which these lines meet became the reference point of CR occlusion Results and conclusions: Results of the experiment completed in 1980 show that all 307 research members had anterior-posterior and upper-lower displacement. Displacement measurements were $0.7{\pm}0.4mm$ for the anterior-posterior displacement, $0.99{\pm}0.50mm$ for the upper-lower displacement,0.18{\pm}0.31 mm for the lateral displacement, and $1.32{\pm}0.67mm$ for the total displacement. Results of the 2006 experiment show that all 409 research members had anterior-posterior and upper-lower displacement. The anterior-posterior displacement was $1.12{\pm}0.86mm$, the upper-lower displacement was $1.02{\pm}0.71mm$, the lateral displacement was $0.61{\pm}0.56mm$, and the total displacement was $1.80{\pm}0.99mm$. No specific differences were found between each group when comparing displacement according to the forms of wisdom teeth eruption. Since 1980, the percentage of unerupted teeth has increased from 35.16% (111/307 people) to 57.5% (236/409 people). Westernization of the Korean cranial form and intraoral structure has brought about these results. In our experiment, 26.7% (109/409 people) of the subjects were cuspid guided, while 7.3% (30/409 people) were mutually guided. No specific differences were found in the amount of displacement between the two groups. Only the subjects with anteriors coming in contact made up the largest percentage group (42.3%, 173/409 people) in our study. No specific differences were found between each group.

The aim of this study was to investigate the capacity of the xylitol-sensitive(Xs) and xylitol-resistant(Xr) S. mutans to induce dental caries in the presence of various carbohydrate. S. mutans KCTC3065 was cultured with 0.4% glucose and 1% xylitol in TYE medium for 30 days at $37^{\circ}C$, 10% $CO_2$ to form Xr S. mutans. Both Xs and Xr strains were cultured in four different carbohydrate environments; 0.5% glucose containing basal culture TYE medium(G-TYE), G-TYE plus 0.5% sucorse, G-TYE plus 0.5% fructose, G-TYE plus 0.5% maltose. Then cell growth, acid production, and extracellular polysaccharides synthesis were analyzed. The final growth level and extracellular polysaccharides contents in the Xr strain were significantly lower than in the Xs strain in all carbohydrates except fructose. While, acid production was no significantly difference between Xs and Xr strain. These results indicate that the virulence of Xr strains is significantly lower than that of Xs strains, which supports Xr strains may be less cariogenic than Xs strains.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of awareness of oral health on oral health status and oral health behavior with subjects of students in the middle school which is the important period when lifetime set of teeth is completed with eruption of the second molar tooth and complete set of permanent teeth, and provide the basic data for development of oral health program for adolescents. We examined oral condition and conducted the survey about students' awareness of oral health and behavior in the middle school located in JeonJu. As the results of oral examination, dental caries and malocclusion were higher in female students and periodontal disease was higher in male students (p < 0.038). There was no significant difference in awareness of oral health between male and female students. However, M = 4.08 out of 5 point scale, which was high. For oral health behaviors, female students (M = 4.508) was higher than male students (M = 4.257) in the question of 'I visit the dental office when my gums are bleeding'. Female students (M = 4.547) was higher than male students (M = 4.333) in the question of 'I use the dental floss after brushing my teeth'(p<0.05). Awareness of oral health gave the significant effect on the oral health behavior at 95 % confidence level. Therefore, the education for oral health behavior is required to improve oral health and studies are needed to present the development of program for awareness and knowledge of oral health affecting behavior.

Treacher Collins syndrome(TCS) is a rare, incurable condition occurring in approximately 1 of 25,000 to 50,000 births. It may occur as a spontaneous mutation out of genetically normal parents or it may be manifested as an autosomal dominant pattern. TCS is characterized by facial deformities such as, underdevelopment of the maxilla, mandible and zygoma, malocclusion, bilateral deformities of auricles, antimongoloid slant of the palpebral fissures. The syndrome is often associated with cleft lip and palate, ear malformations and hearing loss, short stature, and anomalies of the heart and skeleton. Respiratory difficulty associated with air way obstruction may also be observed, and there is considerable difficulty in airway management during general anesthesia. It is necessary that dentists provide safe dental treatments and guidelines to TCS patients by providing adequate understanding about the characteristics of the syndrome and proper ways of managements. The purpose of this study is to report the dental and medical characteristics of the patient who visited the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, Yonsei University for multiple dental caries treatment and to review the literatures of TCS.

The term 'triple tooth' is used to describe a rare dental abnormality in which three teeth appear to be joined. The literature contains many reports of joined primary teeth; most cases have involved, however, the joining of two teeth, and only rarely three teeth. Triple tooth has clinical problems such as dental caries, esthetic problems, malocclusions, and periodontal problems. Therefore, it may require multi-disciplinary approach. The present study describes rare case of triple tooth between maxillary primary central and lateral incisors and a supernumerary tooth. An one-year, eleven-month old girl was seen for evaluation of swelling in the labial gingiva above a right maxillary triple tooth. She experienced traumatic dental injury in that area three weeks ago. Intraoral examination revealed an abscess and fistula in the region of the triple tooth. A radiographic examination showed that right lateral incisor was missing. Endodontic treatment and composite resin restoration was performed on the triple tooth. After follow-ups of 7 months period, there were no marked complications.
Somok, the heart wood of Caesalpinia sappan is used in traditional Chinese medicine. This study was performed to investigate the effect of growth and culture conditions of brazilin from C. sappan against S. mutans ATCC 25175. The bacteria were cultured in brain heart infusion (BHI) broth, and then incubated under 5% $CO_2$ at $37^{\circ}C$ for 18-24 hours. The effect of brazilin against S. mutans was confirmed under the changes of the culture conditions, such as growth curve and the change of pH, protein, and total carbohydrate. The growth of S. mutans in control medium was the highest at 24 hr, while brazilin-added medium (0.3 mg/ml) showed maximum growth at 32 hr. The pH values of the control medium was 5.25 at 16 hr, but the media supplemented with brazilin (0.3 mg/ml) was 7.0 at 16 hr. The amounts of total carbohydrate of the control medium was 11 mg/ml at 8 hr, but the brazilin-added media (0.3 mg/ml) was 18 mg/ml at 8 hr. In the protein change of the culture medium, the control culture broth and the brazilin supplemented-cultures was 2.4 mg/ml and 2.54 mg/ml at 24 hr, respectively. Polysaccharide contents of the control medium and test media were 3 mg/ml and 2 mg/ml at 8 hr, respectively. Thus, the application of C. sappan can be considered a useful and practical material for the prevention of dental caries.

Familial hypophosphatemia is the most common hereditary rickets which occur hypophosphatemia as the calcium concentration in the blood serum is normal but the phosphate concentration in the blood serum decreases by dysfunction of renaltubular phosphorus reabsorption. In spite of the low concentration of phosphate in the blood serum discharge of phosphate by urine and alkaline phosphatase increases remarkably. It is a sex-linked and normally male show severe clinical symptoms than female. This kind of familial hypophosphatemia patients show frontal bossing, square head, short of status for general finding, and for dental finding, thinning of limina dura and dental follicle, thin and hypoplastic enamel, enlarged pulp chamber and canal, high occurance rate of periapical and periodontal abscess and unknown cause of rarefying osteitis. This case is to report about the clinical finging and dental treatment of a child patient, who came to the hospital for treatment of deciduous teeth caries but was refered to pediatrics because the child showed clinically short of status, bow-leg and radiographically enlarged pulp chamber and canal, there as diagnosed as familial hypophosphatemia.
Purpose: Developments in micro/macrostructures of implants and surgical techniques brought out stable outcomes of implant dentistry. The aim of this study was to evaluate the distributions of implant patients, the types of implanted sites, and the success or survival rates of various implant systems and to analyze the implant placement done at each specificintraoral site and situation. Materials and Methods: The data of dental implantations collected between 1992 and 2006 at the Department of Periodontology in 00000 University Hospital were analyzed. Results: 1. Largest part of the patients were at the age of 40s and 50s in bothgender who lost their teeth mostly by periodontaldiseases and caries at the posterior intraoral sites as major ones. Bone densities of type II(mandible) and III(maxilla) were likely to be seen with quantity of type B. Lengths of the implants between 10 and 15 mm and wide platform took the largest part. 2. Survival rates of $Implantium^{(R)}(98.8%)$, $Xive^{(R)}(100%)$ and ITI $TE^{(R)}(100%)$ were high when $Frialit-2^{(R)}$ showed 82%(poor bone density area) or 87.2%(combined with additional therapy). $IMZ^{(R)}$ had lowest cumulative survival(67.5%) and success rate(49.4%) amongst all. 3. Replacement with 2 wide or 3 regular platforms showed no significant differences in survival rate and marginal bone loss atmandibular posterior area. In single restoration of mandibular second molar, 5-year success rate of machined surface $Br{\aa}nemark^{(R)}(70.37%)$ was lower than that of rough surface $ITI^{(R)}$ SLA(100%). 4. Replacement of single tooth in anterior area showed high survival rate of 94.5%. 5. The success rates of $Br{\aa}nemark$ Ti-Unite and ITI SLA at posterior maxilla with poor bone density both showed stable outcomes. 6. 10-year cumulative survival rate of implants with maxillary sinus augmentation by lateral window approach appeared to be 96.60%. Low survival rate(75%) was shown when there were more than two complications combined. Height of grafted bone remained stable above the implant apex. Conclusions : Rough surfaced implants showed stable outcomes in most of the situation including poor bone density and additional therapy combined.
