Cryptomeria japonica plantation was monitored every year during 15 years from 1983 to 1997 for stem diameter and volume. The reciprocal equation, 1/Y = A + B/N, was applied to the relationship between cumulative volume Y and cumulative number N from the largest tree in the stand each year. The parameters A and B, which means respectively the reciprocal of an asymptotic value of total stand stem volume and the reciprocal of the maximum stem volume, are related by a power function. The power functional relationship between A and B derived a linear relationship of B-points ( $N_{B}$, $V_{B}$; $N_{B}$ = B/A, $Y_{B}$ = 1/2A) of each Y-N curve on log-log coordinates. The gradient of B-point line was so steep that the Y-N curve moved parallel upward year by year. The time trajectory of mean stem volume (W) and density ($\rho$) provided evidence in favor of the 3/2 power law of self-thinning, because the gradient of W - $\rho$ trajectory on log-log coordinates approximated to -3/2 at the final stage of stand development. On the basis of the results of Y-N curves and W - $\rho$ trajectory, the time trajectory of maximum stem volume $W_{max obs}$ and $\rho$ was derived theoretically. The gradient of $W_{max obs}$ - $\rho$ trajectory on log-log coordinates is calculated to be -0.6105 at the final stage. The gradient of $W_{max obs}$ - $\rho$ trajectory was steeper than that of W - $\rho$ trajectory at the early stage, while the former is gentler than the latter at the later stage.stage.e.age.e.
The effect of relations parameters on the declination gradient of trees was studied in natural forest of Quercus variabilis, Quercus ${\times}$ grosseserrata, Quercus aliens, and Quercus dentata grown at various slope gradient. The declination gradients of trees were effected by the species, slope gradient, and direction of slope, but not effected by density and height in all species. The species shows a superior factor effecting declination gradient of trees compared with other relations parameters, and next effective factor was slope gradient. Especially in all of slope gradient, the declination gradient of Quercus ${\times}$ grossesserrata was highest.

All-solid-state batteries are promising energy storage devices in which high-energy-density and superior safety can be obtained by efficient cell design and the use of nonflammable solid electrolytes, respectively. This paper presents a systematic study of experimental factors that affect the electrochemical performance of all-solid-state batteries. The morphological changes in composite electrodes fabricated using different mixing speeds are carefully observed, and the corresponding electrochemical performances are evaluated in symmetric cell and half-cell configurations. We also investigate the effect of the composite electrode thickness at different charge/discharge rates for the realization of all-solid-state batteries with high-energy-density. The results of this investigation confirm a consistent relationship between the cell capacity and the ionic resistance within the composite electrodes. Finally, a concentration-gradient composite electrode design is presented for enhanced power density in thick composite electrodes; it provides a promising route to improving the cell performance simply by composite electrode design.
The active fraction of soil organic matter, which includes organic debris and light organic fraction, plays a major role in nutrient cycling. In addition, particulate organic matter is a valuable index of labile soil organic matter and can reflect differences in various soil behaviors. Since soil organic matter bound to soil mineral particles has its density lower than soil minerals, we partitioned soil organic matter into debris ($<1.5g\;cm^{-3}$), light fraction ($1.5-2.0g\;cm^{-3}$), and heavy fraction ($>2.0g\;cm^{-3}$), based on high density $ZnCl_{2-}$ sucrose solutions. Generally, partitioned organic bands were clearly separated, demonstrating that the $ZnCl_{2-}$ sucrose solutions are useful for such a density gradient centrifugation. The available gradient ranges from 1.2 to $2.0g\;cm^{-3}$. Although there was not a statistically meaningful difference in organic debris and organomineral fractions among the examined soils, there was a general trend that a higher content of organic debris resulted in a higher proportion of light organomineral fraction. In addition, high clay content was associated with increased fraction of light organomineals. Partitioning of soil organic carbon revealed that carbon content is reduced in the heavy fraction than in the light fraction, reflecting that the light fraction contains more fresh and abundant carbon than the passive resistant fraction. It was also found that carbon contents in the overall organic matter, debris, light fraction, and heavy fractions may differ considerably in response to different farming practices.
A serpentine channel geometry often used in a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell has a strong pressure gradient between adjacent channels in specific regions. The pressure gradient helps some amount of reactant gas penetrate through a gas diffusion layer(GDL). As a result, the overall serpentine flow structure is slightly different from intention of a designer. The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of serpentine flow structure on current density distribution. By using a commercial code, STAR-CD, a numerical simulation is performed to analyze the fuel cell with relatively high aspect ratio active area. To increase the accuracy of the numerical simulation, GDL permeabilities are measured with various compression conditions. Three-dimensional flow field and current density distribution are calculated. For the verification of the numerical simulation results, water condensation process in the cathode channel is observed through a transparent bipolar plate. The result of this study shows that the region of relatively low current density corresponds to that of dropwise condensation in cathode channels.

The Euclidean distance between error probability density functions (EDEP) has been used as a performance criterion for supervised adaptive signal processing in impulsive noise environments. One of the drawbacks of the EDEP algorithm is a heavy computational complexity due to the double summation operations at each iteration time. In this paper, a recursive method to reduce its computational burden in the estimation of the EDEP and its gradient is proposed. For the data block size N, the computational complexity for the estimation of the EDEP and its gradient can be reduced to O(N) by the proposed method, while the conventional estimation method has $O(N^2)$. In the performance test, the proposed EDEP and its gradient estimation yield the same estimation results in the steady state as the conventional block-processing method. The simulation results indicates that the proposed method can be effective in practical adaptive signal processing.

Functionally gradient porous $Al_2O_3-(t-ZrO_2)/HAp$ composites consist of 3 layers were fabricated using the multi-pass extrusion process at the various temperatures. The continuous pores were homogeneously formed in the $2^{nd}$ passed samples and their size was about $180{\mu}m$ in diameter. In the porous composites sintered at $1200-1400^{\circ}C$, the relative density and bending strength increased with the sintering temperature. The maximum values of relative density and bending strength in the $2^{nd}$ passed $Al_2O_3-(t-ZrO_2)/HAp$ composites were 62.2% and 107.8 MPa, respectively. In order to investigate the growth behavior of osteogenic cells on the functionally gradient porous $Al_2O_3-(t-ZrO_2)/HAp$ composites, an in vitro test was performed, using human osteoblast-like MG-63 cells. The cells were well attached and grown on the rough surface of the inside of the functionally gradient porous body.
The Biolog redox technology was carried out for evaluation of acidification effect on microbial communities at each stage of pH gradient microcosm. While the number of heterotrophic bacterial population and activities of extracellular enzyme decreased as the pH decreased, the number of total bacteria in the microcosm was not affected. The average color development of sample at each pH-gradient showed a sigmoidal curve, and at higher pH, more overall color development appeared in Biolog plates. Average color development value in Biolog plates was stabilized at 50 hours as an optimum incubation time. The color production in the Biolog plates was caused by cell density at above pH 5.0, but by cell activity below pH 4.0. Principal component analysis of color responses revealed distinctive patterns among the pH-gradient microcosm samples.

In this study, frosting experiment was conducted to investigate the characteristics of frost formed on heat exchanger fins of non-uniform temperature distribution. Temperature distribution and frost characteristics of a 2-D fin surface were investigated in the airflow direction and the direction perpendicular to airflow. Temperature gradient was very small in the airflow direction, while it was large in the direction perpendicular to airflow due to fin heat conduction. The variations of the frost thickness gradient and the frost density gradient in the direction perpendicular to airflow were significant. On the other hand, the temperature gradient on frost surface in the direction perpendicular to airflow was significant at the early stage of frosting, while it decreased gradually as time elapsed.

Microwave diagnostics have been widely utilized to measure the important parameters of high temperature and high density plasmas. Reflectometry is known as a promising microwave diagnostic which has a number of merits to measure electron density profiles. In the KSTAR device, X-mode FM reflectometry is planned to measure the plasma density profiles. FM reflectometry is required to extract phase information on raw mixer IF signals, thereby obtaining time-of-flight of reflectometry signals. It is known that the data analysis method is crucial to determine the performance of FM reflectometry In fact, there are several analysis programs which have been utilized in various FM systems. Since each program was developed for a specific device, however, it is difficult to directly apply it to a different reactor like the KSTAR device. It is necessary, therefore, to develop a data analysis program for the KSTAR FM reflectometry. In this paper, complex digital demodulation (CDM) and wavelet transformation are examined in terms of the performance of density profile reconstruction. For the comparison of both methods, FM reflectometry signals are generated on the basis of assumed profiles and the interaction of the X-mode wave and the plasma. In order to see how well both methods work under various conditions, three types of profiles are assumed and noise effects are included. As a result, both methods work well under the condition of gentle density gradient and small noise level. As density gradient becomes steeper and noise level gets higher. the reconstruction performance of wavelet is better than that of CDM.
