Thermosyphons are simple devices that can passively transport thermal energy over relatively long distance with little temperature degradation. These attributes permit the use of low grade thermal energy for thermal control of structures including the snow melting and deicing to the pavement surface. The thermosyphon system requires no costly energy input and Is completely maintenance free. This paper presents the experimental results of the snow melting system in which thermosyphon was utilized to transfer the geothermal energy to the pavement to obviate slipping traffic accidents due to freezing of pavement in winter.
PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to develop a deicing pavement system using carbon fiber or graphite with high electrical conductivity and thermal conductivity. METHODS: Based on literature reviews, in general, conventional concrete does not exhibit electrical and thermal conductivity. In order to achieve a new physical property, experiments were conducted by adding graphite and carbon fiber to a mortar specimen. RESULTS: The result of the laboratory experiment indicates that the addition of graphite can significantly reduce the compressive strength and improve the thermal conductivity of concrete. In the case of carbon fiber, however, the compressive strength of the concrete is slightly increased, whereas, the thermal conductivity is slightly decreased against the plain mortar irrespective of the length of the carbon fiber. In addition, a mixture of the graphite and carbon fiber can greatly improve the degree of heating test. CONCLUSIONS : Various properties of cement mortar change with the use of carbon fiber or graphite. To enhance the conductivity of concrete for deicing during winter, both carbon fiber and graphite are required to be used simultaneously.

This study is a fundamental research for developing self-deicing function of snow-melting asphalt concrete for roadway pavement. The objective of this study is to develop technology of making self-snow-melting asphalt pavement and evaluate properties of the asphalt concrete containing deicers. Asphalt concrete with deicers and CRM was produced by dry process. The $\alpha$-deicer, CRM and F-deicer were used for sand asphalt mixtures of thin-layer pavement on the existing pavement. The $\alpha$-deicer, $\beta$-deicer, CRM A, CRM B and C were used for 13mm dense-graded mixtures on surface course. Penetration grade of 60-80 asphalt was used for asphalt mixtures. Marshall mix-design, indirect tensile strength, freezing and thawing test, analysis of extracted water were carried out to evaluate performance of self deicing function of asphalt mixtures. The study result showed that snow-melting asphalt mixtures had not only good mechanical characteristics and good snow-melting function, but also chemically safe in environmental point of view.
PURPOSES : A finite difference model considering snow melting process on porous asphalt pavement was derived on the basis of heat transfer and mass transfer theories. The derived model can be applied to predict the region where black-ice develops, as well as to predict temperature profile of pavement systems where a de-icing system is installed. In addition, the model can be used to determined the minimum energy required to melt the ice formed on the pavement. METHODS : The snow on the porous asphalt pavement, whose porosity must be considered in thermal analysis, is divided into several layers such as dry snow layer, saturated snow layer, water+pavement surface, pavement surface, and sublayer. The mass balance and heat balance equations are derived to describe conductive, convective, radiative, and latent transfer of heat and mass in each layer. The finite differential method is used to implement the derived equations, boundary conditions, and the testing method to determine the thermal properties are suggested for each layer. RESULTS: The finite differential equations that describe the icing and deicing on pavements are derived, and we have presented them in our work. The framework to develop a temperature-forecasting model is successfully created. CONCLUSIONS : We conclude by successfully creating framework for the finite difference model based on the heat and mass transfer theories. To complete implementation, laboratory tests required to be performed.
PURPOSES : The purpose of this study is to develop a regression model to predict the International Roughness Index(IRI) and Surface Distress(SD) for the estimation of HPCI using Expressway Pavement Management System(PMS). METHODS : To develop an HPCI prediction model, prediction models of IRI and SD were developed in advance. The independent variables considered in the models were pavement age, Annual Average Daily Traffic Volume(AADT), the amount of deicing salt used, the severity of Alkali Silica Reaction(ASR), average temperature, annual temperature difference, number of days of precipitation, number of days of snowfall, number of days below zero temperature, and so on. RESULTS : The present IRI, age, AADT, annual temperature differential, number of days of precipitation and ASR severity were chosen as independent variables for the IRI prediction model. In addition, the present IRI, present SD, amount of deicing chemical used, and annual temperature differential were chosen as independent variables for the SD prediction model. CONCLUSIONS : The models for predicting IRI and SD were developed. The predicted HPCI can be calculated from the HPCI equation using the predicted IRI and SD.

OBJECTIVES : This is a basic research for the domestic production of airport-airside deicers. This research selected basic materials for deicers appropriate for the pavement of domestic airports by evaluating the deicing performances of basic materials used in international-standard airport deicers and their impacts on pavements. METHODS : Laboratory investigation was conducted to evaluate the asphalt surface tensile strength, concrete scaling impact, ASR impact, and deicing performances of sodium formate (NaFm), potassium formate (KFm), sodium acetate (NaAc), and potassium acetate (KAc), which are the basic de-icing materials commonly used at international airports, approved by the FAA. In addition, the analyses were also performed on the airside deicer urea, which is currently used in domestic airports. RESULTS : Laboratory investigation confirmed that sodium formate, potassium formate, sodium acetate, and potassium acetate had superior surface tensile strength, concrete scaling impact, and deicing performance compared to airside urea, but they also had greater impacts on concrete ASR. Among these materials, sodium formate had the best asphalt surface tensile strength, concrete scaling impact, and deicing performance, while also having the greatest impact on ASR; hence, mitigation plans for ASR were needed, if it were to be used as airport-airside deicer. CONCLUSIONS : It is necessary to consider additional additives to prevent ASR of concrete pavements when developing airport-airside deicers using sodium formate, potassium formate, sodium acetate, and potassium acetate.

Deicing salt has been generally used for traffic safety in winter, and the amount is increasing every year. However, deicing salt may induce the decrease of bond strength, surface scaling, and environmental pollution, etc. the purpose of this paper is to suggest the fundamental data on safety and durability for concrete structures through the estimation of chloride concentration profile and chloride diffusion coefficient. According to the test results, the critical chloride concentration($0.9\~1.2kg/m^3$)was measured at depth $23\~30mm$, and the limit chloride concentration($0.3kg/m^3$)was reached to depth 40mm. Also the surface chloride amount indicates 3.45kg per concrete unit weight, and the results showed the possibility of corrosion by deicing salt penetration.
Recently, various damages such as corrosion of rebar, scaling on concrete pavement and environmental deteriorations caused by using the chloride-containing deicer have been reported. To solve these problems, several substitute deicers have been developed by other researchers. However, studies on evaluation of performance for the developed deicers have been limited in the basic laboratory testing. It is necessary to establish the resonable and systematic test procedure for evaluating the deicing performance. In this study, rational and practical test methods were set up through literature review and deicing performance of Eco-Friendly Deicer(EFD), which is a kind of low chloride-containing deicer developed by our research group, was evaluated by the presented test methods. As results of the laboratory tests, initial deicing performance of EFD was similar with that of Pre-Wetted Salt(PWS) which has been used in highway deicing and it was verified by executed field tests in twice that EFD had passable deicing performance compare with PWS.
Concrete is cost-benefit and high-durable construction material, however durability problem can be caused due to steel corrosion under chloride attack. Recently deicing salt has been widely spread in snowing season, which accelerates micro-cracks and scaling in surface concrete and the melted deicing salt causes corrosion in embedded steel. The previous governing equation of Fick's 2nd Law cannot evaluate the deteriorated surface concrete so that another technique is needed for the surface effect. This paper presents chloride penetration analysis technique for concrete subjected to deicing salt utilizing multi-layer diffusion model and time-dependent diffusion behavior. For the work, field investigation results of concrete pavement exposed deicing salt for 18 years are adopted. Through reverse analysis, deteriorated depth and increased diffusion coefficient in the depth are evaluated, which shows 12.5~15.0mm of deteriorated depth and increased diffusion coefficient by 2.0 times. The proposed technique can be effectively applied to concrete with two different diffusion coefficients considering enhanced or deteriorated surface conditions.
