To perform the Adaptive Radiation Therapy (ART), a high degree of deformable registration accuracy is essential. The purpose of this study is to identify whether the change of MV CBCT intensity can improve registration accuracy using predefined modification level and filtering process. To obtain modification level, the cheese phantom images was acquired from both kilovoltage CT (kV CT), megavoltage cone-beam CT (MV CBCT). From the cheese phantom images, the modification level of MV CBCT was defined from the relationship between Hounsfield Units (HUs) of kV CT and MV CBCT images. 'Gaussian smoothing filter' was added to reduce the noise of the MV CBCT images. The intensity of MV CBCT image was changed to the intensity of the kV CT image to make the two images have the same intensity range as if they were obtained from the same modality. The demon deformable registration which was efficient and easy to perform the deformable registration was applied. The deformable lung phantom which was intentionally created in the laboratory to imitate the changes of the breathing period was acquired from kV CT and MV CBCT. And then the deformable lung phantom images were applied to the proposed method. As a result of deformable image registration, the similarity of the correlation coefficient was used for a quantitative evaluation of the result was increased by 6.07% in the cheese phantom, and 18% in the deformable lung phantom. For the additional evaluation of the registration of the deformable lung phantom, the centric coordinates of the mark which was inserted into the inner part of the phantom were measured to calculate the vector difference. The vector differences from the result were 2.23, 1.39 mm with/without modification of intensity of MV CBCT images, respectively. In summary, our method has quantitatively improved the accuracy of deformable registration and could be a useful solution to improve the image registration accuracy. A further study was also suggested in this paper.
Deformable models offer an attractive approach for extracting three-dimensional boundary structures from volumetric images. However, conventional deformable models have three major limitations - sensitive to initial condition, difficult to represent complex boundaries with severe object concavities and protrusions, and self-intersective between model elements. This paper proposes a deformable model that is effective to extract geometrically complex boundary surfaces by improving away the limitations of conventional deformable models. First, the proposed deformable model resamples its elements hierarchically based on volume image pyramid. The hierarchical resampling overcomes sensitivity to initialization by extracting the boundaries of objects in a multiscale scheme and enhances geometric flexibility to be well adapted to complex image features by refining and regularizing the size of model elements based on voxel size. Second, the physics-based formulation of our model integrates conventional internal and external forces, as well as a non-self-intersecting force. The non-self-intersecting force effectively prevents collision or crossing over between non-neighboring model elements by pushing each other apart if they are closer than a limited distance. We show that the proposed model successively extracts the complex boundaries including severe concavities and protrusions, neither depending on initial position nor causing self-intersection, through the experiments on several computer-generated volume images and brain MR volume images.
In the earth telescope for space observation, the adaptive optical (AO) system that immediately compensates atmospheric turbulence is helpful to get high-resolution images. An adaptive optics for earth telescopes is very attractive, since the Earth telescopes can be made at lower costs and have larger optical apertures than space telescopes. Generally. in order to remove the wavefront error produced by atmospheric turbulence, a deformable mirror, whose surface shape changes in a controllable way in response to a drive signal, is used. The characteristics and patterns of actuators are very important for the effective control of a deformable mirror. The mirror surface shape deformed by one actuator is defined as an influence function and the deformable mirror can be effectively modeled and designed using this influence function. In this paper. by simplifying the actual influence function obtained by FEM analyses into the Gaussian function and introducing the coupling coefficient between actuators, the influence function is constructed. The proper coupling coefficient of the target system can be obtained by performance analyses of a deformable mirror for various coupling coefficients. Using the constructed influence function, the deformable mirror with equally spaced triangular and square actuator patterns is analyzed for various spacings and an effective actuator pattern is proposed.
In this paper, we propose a method to detect contours of a face, eyes, and a mouth of a person in the color image in order to make an avatar automatically. First, we use the HSI color model to exclude the effect of various light conditions, and find skin regions in the input image by using the skin color defined on HS-plane. And then, we use deformable templates and genetic algorithm (GA) to detect contours of a face, eyes, and a mouth. Deformable templates consist of B-spline curves and control point vectors. Those represent various shapes of a face, eyes and a mouth. GA is a very useful search algorithm based on the principals of natural selection and genetics. Second, the avatar is automatically created by using GA-detected contours and Fuzzy C-Means clustering (FCM). FCM is used to reduce the number of face colors. In result, we could create avatars which look like handmade caricatures representing user's identity. Our approach differs from those generated by existing methods.

In this paper, adaptive matching method using the same features for rigid and deformable object images is proposed. Firstly, we determine whether the two images are matched or not using the geometric verification and generate the matching information. Decision boundary which separates deformable matching-pair from non-matching pair is obtained through statistical analysis of matching information. The experimental result shows that the proposed method lowers the computational complexity and increases the matching accuracy compared to the existing method.

A very flexible beam can be used to model various types of continuous mechanical parts such as cables and wires. In this paper, the dynamic properties of a very flexible beam, included in a multibody system, are analyzed using absolute nodal coordinates formulation, which is based on finite element procedures, and the general continuum mechanics theory to represent the elastic forces. In order to consider the dynamic interaction between a continuous large deformable beam and a rigid multibody system, a combined system equations of motion is derived by adopting absolute nodal coordinates and rigid body coordinates. Using the derived system equation, a computation method for the dynamic stress during flexible multibody simulation is presented based on Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, and its reliability is verified by a commercial program NASTRAN. This method is significant in that the structural and multibody dynamics models can be unified into one numerical system. In addition, to analyze a multibody system including a very flexible beam, formulations for the sliding joint between a very deformable beam and a rigid body are derived using a non-generalized coordinate, which has no inertia or forces associated with it. In particular, a very flexible catenary cable on which a multibody system moves along its length is presented as a numerical example.
We are developing Adaptive Optics (AO) system for astronomical use. The He-Ne laser works as an artificial light source. The tip-tilt correction servo is added to our AO system. The tip-tilt term, among the Zernike terms, is the biggest contributor of wavefront deformation caused by atmospheric turbulence at small telescopes. The tip-tilt correction servo consists of a Piezo tip-tilt platform with a mirror, a quadrant photodiode as a tip-tilt sensor, and controllers. The Shack-Hartmann wavefront sensor measures the residual wavefront errors and they are corrected by the MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical System) deformable mirror. The MEMS deformable mirror allows the compact size at low cost compare to adaptive secondary mirror and other deformable mirrors. As the frame rates of the MEMS deformable mirror is about tens of kHz, the frame rates of the detector in wavefront sensor is the bottleneck of the wavefront correction speed. For faster performance, we replaced a CCD which provides frame rates only 70 Hz with a CMOS with frame rates up to 450 Hz.
Building segmentation using satellite imagery such as EO (Electro-Optical) and SAR (Synthetic-Aperture Radar) images are widely used due to their various uses. EO images have the advantage of having color information, and they are noise-free. In contrast, SAR images can identify the physical characteristics and geometrical information that the EO image cannot capture. This paper proposes a learning framework for efficient building segmentation that consists of a teacher-student-based privileged knowledge distillation and deformable convolution block. The teacher network utilizes EO and SAR images simultaneously to produce richer features and provide them to the student network, while the student network only uses EO images. To do this, we present objective functions that consist of Kullback-Leibler divergence loss and knowledge distillation loss. Furthermore, we introduce deformable convolution to avoid pixel-level noise and efficiently capture hard samples such as small and thin buildings at the global level. Experimental result shows that our method outperforms other methods and efficiently captures complex samples such as a small or narrow building. Moreover, Since our method can be applied to various methods.

To achieve a natural and plausible interaction with deformable objects and to setup the desirable initial conditions of simulation, user should be able to define and control the geometric constraints intuitively. In addition, user should be able to utilize the simulation as a problem solving platform by experimenting various simulation situations without major modification of the simulator. The proposed physically based geometric constraint simulation system solves the problem using a non-linear finite element method approach to represent deformable objects and constraint forces are generated by defining geometric constraints on the nodes of the object to maintain the restriction. It allows user to define and modify geometric constraints and an algorithm converts these geometric constraints into constraint forces which seamlessly integrate controllability to the simulation system. Simulator can handle linear, angular, inequality based geometric constraints on the objects. Our experimental results show that constraints are maintained in the tight error bound and preserve desired shape of deformable object during the entire simulation.
