  • This study aims to investigate the effects of the microstructures and nodule type on the fatigue characteristics of cast iron. Fatigue tests were carried out in tension-tension mode using a servo-hydraulic testing machine with load control mode operating at a frequency of 15 Hz. The tests were conducted at stress ratio R=Kmin/Kmax, of 0.1. Initial crack ${\Dalta}K$ values were highly performed with increase in tensile strength of DCI fatigue specimens. ${\Dalta}K_{th}$ region, fatigue crack propagation was primarily advanced through cell boundary and in periphery of near nodule. Fatigue crack propagation rate of D2 consisted with 2Phase(Ferrite+Pearlite) was slow due to crack closure enhanced by crack deflection and occurred crack branching. The generation of crack branch was occurred due to interaction of crack-nodule. At Threshold and Paris zone, the fractographs of the fatigue fracture surface for DCI show typical striations of a ductile fracture and isolated cleavage planes near graphite. The effect of microstructure on fatigue crack propagation of GC strongly depends on the type of flake. The generation of crack branch occurred due to interaction of crack-nodule. The fractographs of the fatigue fracture surface for GC show cleavage plane along the flake graphite.

  • The CRT monitor display system for SONAR signal that are commonly used in ships or naval vessels uses vector scanning method. Therefore the processing circuits of the system is complex. Also because production had been shut down, the supply of parts is difficult as well as high-cost. FPGA -based embedded processor system is flexible to adapting to various applications because it makes simple processing circuits and its core is easily reconfigurable, and provides high speed performance in low-cost. In this paper, we describe an implementation of SONAR signal LCD display system using the FPGA embedded processor system to overcome some weakness of existing CRT system. By changing X-Y Deflection and CRT control blocks of current system into FPGA embedded processor system, our system provides the simplicity, flexibility and low-cost of system configuration, and also real-time acquisition and display of SONAR signal.

  • This paper presents the robust design of gripper part for a high-speed LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) transfer system. In this paper, the 1st DOE (Design of Experiment) is conducted to find out main-effect factors fur the design of gripper part. Thirty-six experiments are performed using $ANSYS^{(R)}$ and their results are statistically analyzed using $MINITAB^{(R)}$, which shows that the factors, i.e., First-width, Second-width, Rec-width, and thickness of gripper part, are more important than other factors. The main effect plots shows that the maximum deflection and mass of gripper part are minimized by increasing First-width, Second-width, Rec-width and thickness. The 2nd DOE is conducted to obtain RSM (Response Surface Method) equation. The CCD (Central Composite Design) technique with four factors is used. Optimum design is conducted using the RSM equation. Genetic algorithm is used for optimal design. Six sigma robust design is conducted to find out a guideline for control range of design parameter. To obtain six sigma level reliability, the standard deviations of design parameters are shown to be controlled within 5% of average design value.

  • It is very difficult to determine suitable cutting conditions in order to obtain accurate cutting profiles because machining errors caused by tool deflection depend upon cutting conditions. In this study the relationship between real cutting profiles (inclined shapes and machining errors) and cutting conditions was modeled in order to fabricate draft angle on micro molds. CCD (Central Composite Design) of DOE (Design Of Experiment) and RSM (Response Surface Method) were applied in order to model the relationship between cutting conditions and machining errors. In order to use CCD the range of radial depth of cut was chosen by $10-90{\mu}m$ and the range of feedrate was chosen by 200-300mm/min, and 9 points of cutting conditions were chosen inside determined ranges. Then, actual cutting processes were carried out as respect to 9 points of cutting conditions, draft angles and real cutting profiles were measured on cutting profiles, each response surface function was determined by conducting response surface analysis and the functions were represented by 3-dimensional graphs, contour lines and $101{\times}101$ matrices. Consequently it is possible to determine suitable cutting conditions in order to obtain arbitrary given draft angles and cutting profiles by using modeling. To validate proposed approach in this study suitable cutting conditions were determined by modeling in order to obtain arbitrary given draft angle and cutting profile, and actual cutting processes were carried out. About 95% of good agreement between predicted and measured values was obtained.

  • In the steel structure of high-rise buildings, a connection analysisand a column design have been made after welding and bolting suitable gaps. Each country, however, has different codes, and such differences are very big. American steel has been designed according to a code that all axial loads can be carried from the upper parts to the lower parts as determined by the designer, but Korean and Japanese steel have been designed by 1/4 of the standard of all axial loads. In this paper, a metal touch experiment was done as an intermediation parameter with a connecting location and a connecting method for economic and constructive efficiency. Every specimen is tested by a low-to-high displacement control to grasp ultimate strength, displacement, the connection's lateral deflection, and stress. The results of the test were compared and analyzed.

  • In this study a series of centrifuge tests were carried out in dry sand to analyze the comparison of lateral pile behavior for static loading and dynamic loading condition. In case of static loading condition, the lateral displacement was applied up to 50% of pile diameter by deflection control method. And the input sine wave of 0.1 g~0.4 g amplitude and 1 Hz frequency was applied at the base of the soil box using shaking table for dynamic loading condition. From comparison of experimental static p-y curve obtained from static loading tests with API p-y curves, API p-y curves can predict well within 20% error the ultimate subgrade reaction force of static loading condition. The ultimate subgrade reaction force of experimental dynamic p-y curve is 5 times larger than that of API p-y curves and experimental static p-y curves. Therefore, pseudo-static analysis applied to existing p-y curve for seismic design could greatly underestimate the soil resistance at non-linear domain and cause overly conservative design.

  • Self-reinforced silicon carbide was prepared by hot pressing and the control of starting phases of raw materials and its microstructural characteristics was investigated. The specimens with self-reinforced microstructure were obtained from the compacts with mixed compositions of ${\alpha}$-and ${\beta}$-SiC powders. Self-reinforced microstructure which is composed of large dispersed grains with rod-like shape and matrix with small equiaxed grains was formed by the transformation to the ${\alpha}$-SiC with 4H polytype for ${\beta}$-SiC and anisotropic grain growth during the heat treatment. Of all speimens the values of volume fraction maximum length and aspect ratio for large grains with rode-like types were the highest at the specimen with 50 vol% ${\beta}$-SiC in the starting SiC powder and therefore this specimen showed the highest fracture toughness due to the crack deflection by rod-like grains during crack propagation.

  • Design of general steel structure had applied to achieve elastic designing concept so far. Because elastic design supposes that whole structure complies with elasticity formula so that achieve via allowable stress of material. It is concept that calculate stress distribution of construction about action external load and estimate load when the maximum stress reaches equally with allowable stress that is established by maximum safety load of the structure. But, absence that compose actuality structure by deal with external load increase small success surrender and structure hardness falls and structure in limited state finally on the whole as showing complicated process by interference between collapse and buckling under compression. Applied ANSYS (elasto-plasticity large deformation finite element method) to be mediocrity finite element program for analysis method and analysis control used in Newton-Raphson method & Arc-length method.

  • The U metal chips generated in developing nuclear fuel and a gamma radioisotope shield have been stored under immersion of water in KAERI. When the water of the storing vessels vaporizes or drains due to unexpected leaking, the U metal chips are able to open to air. A new oxidation treatment process was raised for a long time safe storage with concepts of drying under vacuum, evaporating the containing water and organic material with elevating temperature, and oxidizing the uranium metal chips at an appropriate high temperature under conditions of controlling the feeding rate of oxygen gas. In order to optimize the oxidation process the uranium metal chips were completely dried at higher temperature than $300^{\circ}C$ and tested for oxidation at various temperatures, which are $300^{\circ}C$, $400^{\circ}C$, and $500^{\circ}C$. When the oxidation temperature was $400^{\circ}C$, the oxidized sample for 7 hours showed a temperature rise of $60^{\circ}C$ in the self-ignition test. But the oxidized sample for 14 hours revealed a slight temperature rise of $7^{\circ}C$ representing a stable behavior in the self-ignition test. When the temperature was $500^{\circ}C$, the shorter oxidation for 7 hours appeared to be enough because the self-ignition test represented no temperature rise. By using several chemical analyses such as carbon content determination, X-ray deflection (XRD), Infrared spectra (IR) and Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) on the oxidation treated samples, the results of self-ignition test of new oxidation treatment process for U metal chip were interpreted and supported.

  • A circulation water channel with observational section of $4m{\times}2.4m{\times}1m(length{\times}breadth{\times}depth)$ and the maximum channel flow speed of 2 m/sec was designed for model tests of fishing gears. It consists of 6 sections evenly divided for easy connection. Two observational acryl windows of $1.2m{\times}1.5m$ and 2cm thick are provided. Steel deflection plates, equally spaced in 20-40cm, are fixed at corners of the channel to reduce the loss of water pressure head through the channel. The flow in the channel is controlled by D.C. motor control system with 50 H.P. driving propeller system. A series of model testing capabilities for fishing gear have been examined and the results are as follows. 1) The speed of water flow was in the range from zero to 2.3 m/sec. 2) The difference between the velocity of channel flow along the center line and that along both sides in the channel was less than 0.2 m/sec.
