The performance of a wooden deck made of refractory materials that have difficulties in achieving target penetrations as stipulated in the specification and quality standards for treated wood in Korea, was assessed via a case study in this research. A wooden deck built in Jinju in 2009 was selected for this study because of its fabrication method using pressure and treated refractory materials. The penetration and retention analysis did not satisfy the domestic standard for treated wood. Inspection of the deck in 2019 revealed that the deck had been attacked by decay fungi. Cap rails showed much deeper and wider checking on their surface compared with the top and base rails, resulting in a severe fungal attack. The decking boards exhibited severe fungal decay primarily in the end parts. However, the rails and balusters without checks and posts were virtually free of fungal attack irrespective of the preservative penetration measures. Copper content in the soil 5 cm away from the deck was less than 150 mg/kg, implying that copper movement in the soil was very limited. These results suggest that the inhibition of surface propagation and the protection of end surfaces are essential factors in increasing the longevity of treated wooden decks; further, the results also showed that the deck was within an acceptable range from the point of copper contamination.

A Bubble size distribution model has been developed for the numerical simulation of cryogenic high-speed cavitating flow of the turbo-pumps in the liquid fuel rocket engine. The new model is based on the previous one proposed by the authors, in which the bubble number density was solved as a function of bubble size at each grid point of the calculation domain by means of Eulerian framework with respect to the bubble size coordinate. In the previous model, the growth/decay of bubbles due to pressure difference between bubble and liquid was solved exactly based on Rayleigh-Plesset equation. However, the unsteady heat transfer between liquid and bubble, which controls the evaporation/condensation rate, was approximated by a theoretical solution of unsteady heat conduction under a constant temperature difference. In the present study, the unsteady temperature field in the liquid around a bubble is also solved exactly in order to establish an accurate and efficient numerical simulation code for cavitating flows. The growth/decay of a single bubble and growth of bubbles with nucleation were successfully simulated by the proposed model.
The purpose of this research is to investigate the characteristics of static and total pressure distribution in the upward free water jet system impinged on a downward flat plate. The rectangular nozzle was used and its contraction and aspect ratio was five and about seven respectively. Experimental conditions considered were jet velocity, distance between nozzle and flat plate, height of supplementary water. It was founded that pressure distribution on the flat plate had the Gaussian curve when the pressure at stagnation point and impinging half width were chosen as the scaling parameters. The maximum pressure was shown at the stagnation point. The central impingement velocity decreased with the increment of distance between nozzle and flat plate, and its slop of decay was similar to that of chracteristics decay region in the three-dimensional free jet.

This study aims to separate hydrograph into baseflow and event water to calculate baseflow rate during a rainfall in small catchments, Yuseong, Daejeon, The hydrograph of stream during a period with no excess rainfall will decay. The discharge is composed entirely of groundwater contributions. During the period, the Cl concentration of the stream water can be regarded as being in equilibrium with that of the groundwater. Using Cl as a conservative tracer, two-component hydrograph separations were performed from end point of the period to next end point. The required data were obtained by monitoring of the surface water table, along with discharge rate of stream. Cl concentration of rainfall, surface water were measured and recorded. Hydrograph separation, a mixing model using chemical tracer is applied to chemical hydrograph separation technique. These results show that baseflow rates are 31.6% of rainfall in the catchments during study period.

This study was conducted to investigate changes in pH, volatile basic nitrogen (VBN), thiobarbituric acid (TBA), $a^*$ (redness), shearing force, and microbial content (total plate count; TPC) in beef during freezing storage at -1, -5, and $-20^{\circ}C$ for 21 days. TPC as an effective quality indicator was used to identify the decay point by regression analysis. The pH, TBA values, and TPC significantly increased with storage at all tested temperatures (p<0.05). VBN significantly increased and shearing force significantly decreased with storage at -1 and $-5^{\circ}C$ (p<0.05). TPC showed significant correlation with temperature at $-1^{\circ}C\;(R^2=0.891)$, $-5^{\circ}C\;(R^2=0.856)$, and $-20^{\circ}C\;(R^2=0.444)$. The decay points at -1, -5, and $-20^{\circ}C$, were 27, 52, and 84 days, respectively. The results suggest that a freezing temperature of $-5^{\circ}C$ is effective for short-term storage of beef.
Among the biodegradability tests, TOC-HANDAI and OECD method were utilized to examine the degree of biodegradation of endocrine disruptors, Bisphenol A (BPA) and Nonylphenol. Both methods used natural water microcosms and measured their biodegrada-bilities of BPA and Nonylphenol, in terms of TOC or DOC degradation with time for 28 days. Biodegradabilities for BPA, 73-78% with TOC-HANDAI method and 77-81% with OECD method were obtained respectively at the end of experiment. There was no difference in BPA degradation between two methods. BPA degradation was described by two distinct first order decay rates (k$_1$ and k$_2$) which could be separated by a simple visual fitting. Most of the initial decay reaction accelerated within 1-7 days with k$_1$of 0.24-0.34 $day^{-1}$. And the following another long term first order decay coefficient (k$_2$) showed 0.02-0.05 day$^{-1}$ with much flat slope. About 20-25% of initial BPA remained at the end of experiment. It suggests that the remaining TOC components in BPA biodegradation considered to be refractory metabolites of BPA. Nonylphenol at each sampling point was appeared to be mineralized 20-48% of initial TOC concentration. Consequently Nonylphenol seems more recalcitrant against biodegradation. BPA was not detected in the detection limit of ppb in the watershed of Daechung reservoir and Kum river. However 25 ppb concentration of BPA was detected at the influent of industrial wastewater treatment plant in Taejon.

The purpose of this experimental research is to investigate the local heat transfer characteristics in the upward free water jet impinged on a downward flat plate of uniform heat flux. The inner shape of rectangular nozzle used was sine curve type and its contraction ratio of inlet to outlet area was five. Experimental parameters considered were Reynolds number, nozzle exit-flat plate distance, and level of supplementary water. Local Nusselt number was influenced by Reynolds number, Prandtl number, supplementary water level, and distance between the nozzle exit and flat plate. Within the impingement region, the Nusselt number has a maximum value on the nozzle center axis and decreases monotonically outward from center. Outside of the impingement region, on the other hand, the Nusselt number has a secondary peak near the position where the distance from nozzle center reaches four times the nozzle width. However if nozzle exit velocity exceeds 6.2 m/s, the secondary peak appears also in the impingement region. The empirical equation for the stagnation heat transfer is a function of Prandtl, Reynolds, and axial distance from the nozzle exit. The optimum level of supplementary water to augment the heat transfer rate at stagnation point was found to be twice the nozzle width.
Communication in delay tolerant networks (DTNs) relies on message transport by mobile nodes, and a correct understanding of the node mobility characteristics is therefore crucial to the design of an efficient DTN routing protocol. However, previous work has mainly focused on uncovering all behaviors of node movement, which is not conducive to accurately detecting the specific movement characteristics of a different node. In this paper, we seek to address this problem based on a consideration of social relationships. We first consider social ties from both static and dynamic perspectives. For a static perspective, in addition to certain accidental events, social relations are considered for a long time granularity and tend to be stable over time. For a dynamic perspective, social relations are analyzed in a relatively short time granularity and are likely to change over time. Based on these perspectives, we adopted different efficient approaches to dividing node pairs into two classes, i.e., familiar and unfamiliar pairs. A threshold approach is used for static social ties whereas a density-based aggregation method is used for dynamic social relationships. Extensive experimental results show that both familiar and unfamiliar node pairs have the same inter-contact time distribution, which closely follows a power-law decay up to a certain point, beyond which it begins to exponentially decay. The results also demonstrate that the inter-contact time distribution of familiar pairs decays faster than that of unfamiliar pairs, whether from a static or dynamic perspective. In addition, we also analyze the reason for the difference between the inter-contact time distributions of both unfamiliar and familiar pairs.
The antimicrobial extracts of Rheum palmatum and Coptis chinensis root as well as grapefruit seed extract were applied to dipping treatment for keeping qualities of zucchinis, respectively, which were then packed in low density polyethylene films incorporated with 1% antimicrobial extracts and stored at 10$\^{C}$. Dipping and packaging in the antimicrobial agents suppressed the growth of putrefactive microorganisms and the decay ratio of zucchinis. In addition, the loss ratio of ascorbic acid content of zucchinis and their weight were decreased during the storage of zucchinis. Consequently, the combined method of dipping and packaging in antimicmbial agents tumid out to be superior to dipping treatment or film-packaging in the view point of decay ratio and the quality control of zucchinis.
The paper presents the study on a change in modal parameters and structural stiffness of cable-stayed Fiberline Bridge made entirely of Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) composite used for 20 years in the fjord area of Kolding, Denmark. Due to this specific location the bridge structure was subjected to natural aging in harsh environmental conditions. The flexural properties of the pultruded GFRP profiles acquired from the analyzed footbridge in 1997 and 2012 were determined through three-point bending tests. It was found that the Young's modulus increased by approximately 9%. Moreover, the influence of the temperature on the storage and loss modulus of GFRP material acquired from the Fiberline Bridge was studied by the dynamic mechanical analysis. The good thermal stability in potential real temperatures was found. The natural vibration frequencies and mode shapes of the bridge for its original state were evaluated through the application of the Finite Element (FE) method. The initial FE model was created using the real geometrical and material data obtained from both the design data and flexural test results performed in 1997 for the intact composite GFRP material. Full scale experimental investigations of the free-decay response under human jumping for the experimental state were carried out applying accelerometers. Seven natural frequencies, corresponding mode shapes and damping ratios were identified. The numerical and experimental results were compared. Based on the difference in the fundamental natural frequency it was again confirmed that the structural stiffness of the bridge increased by about 9% after 20 years of service life. Data collected from this study were used to validate the assumed FE model. It can be concluded that the updated FE model accurately reproduces the dynamic behavior of the bridge and can be used as a proper baseline model for the long-term monitoring to evaluate the overall structural response under service loads. The obtained results provided a relevant data for the structural health monitoring of all-GFRP bridge.
