A Study on the Solid-Liquid Separation Characteristics for Highly Concentrated Swine Wastewater Using Model Decanter (모델 데칸트를 이용한 고농도 슬러리상태 양돈폐수의 고액분리특성에 관한 연구)

  • This study was performed to investigate the characteristics and performance of model Decanter for separating swine wastewater to solid and liquid which is slurry state with 12.6% TS. Swine wastewater of the slurry tank was pumped into model Decanter which capacity was $2m^3$/hr in 10% TS Slurry inside of bowl was separated to solid-liquid by centrifugal acceleration. Sampling was done in the section of slurry feed pipe, supernatant outflow pipe, cake discharge pipe. After solid-liquid separation TS, $COD_cr$ and slurry volume reduction effect represented 38%, 40%, 19.6% respectively. Relation factor of model Decanter operation slurry concentration, optimum retention time of slurry, overflow velocity of supernatant, supernatant concentration, sludge removal rate etc. Optimal operation conditions can be set and evaluated efficiency based on the experimental results in the case of Decanter adopted for solid-liquid separation in highly concentrated swine wastewater.

  • In this study, the failure analysis of a decanter is carried out and the methods of performance improvement are presented. The decanter is a centrifugal separator that is used to separate water and solids from municipal and industrial sludge. Therefore, the decanter should be designed to improve the dewatering of sludge. Besides high performance, the decanter should guarantee its life time under a severe using condition. For theses reasons, the failure analysis and performance improvement of the decanter are studied. It is found from this study that the failure is caused by mass unbalance, wear, clogging or crack. If these failure causes are prevented, the life time as well as the performance is expected to be improved.

  • Numerical investigation based on the control-volume using finite-difference method has been made by the development of computer program in order to figure out the pattern of the flow field inside screw decanter. The typical flow pattern inside screw decanter is characterized by the two strong recirculation zones separated by the main stream from slurry discharge hole to exit. These recirculation regions and flow pattern are strongly influenced by the centrifugal force and the change of the value of slurry viscosities, that is,500, 1,000 and 3,000cp respectively. The wear of screw decanter appeared experimentally in two spots; one is near the circumferential area of the slurry discharge hole and the other is on the decanter blades at a certain height from the bottom to a different degree after the continuous long-term operation. These wears are partly explained by the flow pattern and the strong turbulence intensity near the recirculation attachment region.

  • This study suggests a small-sized screw decanter specialized for dredging sites. Generally, conventional screw decanters are composed of a cylinder and a cone. However, the suggested screw decanter simply has a cone based on a cone-type bowl structure. In this research, a commercial analysis tool is used to establish an optimal design for the bowl and the screw conveyor. Moreover, the base frame, where the main bearings that support the spindle of the bowl and the screw conveyor are installed, is optimally designed considering the weight of the rotating body and the deflection caused by the high centrifugal force. Furthermore, the natural frequency range of the spinning body, the bowl and the screw conveyor, is applied to this base frame; it is designed not to correspond to the resonance frequency range and achieves stability as a result. This study suggests an optimal design for the rotating body and the base frame of a screw decanter considering its vibration characteristics. Such a design will prevent overuse of materials and help to reduce the weight and volume-and the price-of a screw decanter.

  • Prognostics and health management (PHM) is recently converging throughout the industry, one of the trending issue is to detect abnormal conditions at decanter centrifuge during water treatment facilities. Wastewater treatment operation produces corrosive gas which results failures on attached sensors. This scenario causes frequent sensor replacement and requires highly qualified manager's visual inspection while replacing important parts such as bearings and screws. In this paper, we propose anomaly detection by measuring the vibration of the decanter centrifuge based on the video camera images. Measuring the vibration of the screw decanter by applying the optical flow technique, the amount of movement change of the corresponding pixel is measured and fed into the LST M model. As a result, it is possible to detect the normal/warning/dangerous state based on LSTM classification. In the future work, we aim to gather more abnormal data in order to increase the further accuracy so that it can be utilized in the field of industry.

  • The decanter is very useful to harvest biomass from plant cell cultures in large-scale process. It is very important to obtain high yield and low moisture content in recovered biomass so as to minimize solvent usage in subsequent extraction steps. Effluent clarity was also affected by the differential speed although this affect was more dramatic at higher flow rates than at lower flow rates. Moisure content was largely unaffected by flow rate. A decrease in moisture content was evident as differential speed decreased.

  • In this paper, based on the concept of solid particles' hovering problem the working formula for the channel design of a Decanter-type centrifuge were derived. The Shields' diagram and its curve-fitting formula were used in determining the criterion of particle size for the sediment. By using these formula the designer can determine the sectional configuration of the channel, such as the liquid depth, the normal pitch of the screw-blade arrangement and the bowl diameter.

  • In this paper, based on the concept of solid particles' sediment problem the working formula determining the bowl length of a Decanter-type centrifuge were derived. Assuming that particles are uniformly distributed along the vertical line of the liquid inlet position, it was possible to derive a constant value k used for determining the bowl length. It was shown from the sample calculations that the bowl length should be increased as the particle size to be removed from the liquid is decreased. The length also should be increased for the same particle size as the bowl diameter is decreased. To help the engineers choose a reasonable bowl diameter, the statistical relationship between the bowl diameter and the capacity of the international products is obtained and presented.

  • In general, the electric motor for driving the centrifuge of Decanter type is selected based on the power(starting power) necessary to start the bowl and the screw shaft. However the operation cost of the machine is dependent on the power needed at a steadily operating condition, including the power against the bearing friction and that for the sludge removal. In this paper, the formulation for the sludge-removal power is presented. Sample calculation for a specific design shows that the sludge-removal power is increased with the friction coefficient. It also reveals that the power is mainly dependent on the length of the screw blade rather than the beach angle. Further it is shown that the power increases in square of the rotational speed of the machine.

  • The centrifuge system in liquid radwaste system(LRS) is composed of several skids including Decanter and Separator. The decanter separates the sludge over 5mm in size within liquid radwaste by centrifuge force and drops it into 55gallon drum. The separator separates the sludge over $0.1{\mu}m$ in size within the liquid radwaste processed by Decanter by centrifuge force. The process of separating the sludge from the LRS keeps the resin in Ion Exchanger from being damaged and improves the performance of Ion Exchanger, and satisfies the decontamination factor suggested in Uljin 5,6 FSAR to safety discharge into the outer environment.
