It is thought that there is a difference of viw\ew between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law about the possesion of economic dominance and many conflicts rises because of economic dominance. but the study in 1985 than 1974 suggests the possibility of conflict meditator because mother-in-law and daughter-in-law do homework dependently in the practice of power. In affection structure, the chief dissatisfaction toward daughter-in-law showes the change in time. In 1974, there was no affection and respect. In 1985, the rate of doing without consultation was high. Also, the lack of communication of mother-in-law and daughter-in-law is the cause of conflict. 2. Indicating behavior the rate of thinking alone if high in both sides. But in the survey of 1985, the covert verbal aggressive action with which mother-in-law appeals to her daughter and daughter-in-law to husband is rising. 3. Influence on the relationship among family by the conflict between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. the conflict between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law play negative effects on the intimacy and relation between husband and wife. 4. • The stdy of this study is to explore whether there is a social class difference in the relationship of mother and daughter-in-laws. The findings and summarized as follows. in the upper class the relationship of mother and daughter-in-laws seems 'fictitious one' In the middle class when her husband's occupation status is higher than his father's the relationship of mother and daughter-in-laws seems 'the relationship which is trobultesome only on daughter-in-law's behalf. When her husbands' occupation status is similar to his father's and her family is living together with in-laws and she and her mother-in=law are housewives the relationship of mother and daughter-in-laws seems 'the troublesome relationship for the both parts of mother and daughter-in-laws' In the same situation as above except the fact that the mother-in-law is housewife and daughter-in-law working the relationship between mother and daugther-in-laws seems apper to be 'interdependence' When her husband is self- mployed the daughter-in-laws keeps the interdepen-dent relationship with the mother-in-law. In the low class the relationship of mother and daughter-in-laws seems 'neglect' or 'conflicting'.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the structures of consciousness on the experiences of formation and adjustment in multicultural families. A qualitative study was designed in this article. The research participants were 10 dyads of immigrant married women and their mothers-in-law. Before the marriage, the mother-in-law's expectation about her daughter-in-law was not high, and the daughter-in-law held the same opinion of her mother-in-law. During the marriage process, the mother-in-law had difficulties in terms of physical, emotional, and material aspects. The daughter-in-law endured the wedding procedure by holding onto hope and anticipation for the future. After the marriage, the mother-in-law eventually became satisfied with her daughter-in-law, and the daughter-in-law grew to feel thankful for her new family members and expressed that she was living a happy life. Consequently, the essence of formation and adjustment in multicultural families was "obtaining precious family members through the undergoing of trial and error."

  • In this essay, I compare the ways in which the mid-thirteenth century English romance, Floris and Blancheflour, represents relationships of the Spanish pagan queen to her adoptive Christian daughter who becomes her daughter-in-law, with the ways in which Chaucer's Man of Law's Tale and other so-called Constance romances delineate relationships between mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law. What draws me into these romances is the fact that they both convey the intergenerational relationships of women. However, the texts become distinct from each other in the way in which each depicts women characters and their relationships with one another. In this paper, I argue that the level of intimacy that the mother-in-law figure has with the daughter-in-law figure plays a defining role in making the former perform her agency for or against the latter. In the Man of Law's Tale and other Constance romances, the daughter-in-law figure is in every sense an alien or 'outsider' to the mother-in-law figure. To the contrary, Blancheflour in Floris is a sort of 'insider' to the queen because they lived in the same household for fourteen years-ever since the girl's birth. The queen, therefore, should have a high degree of intimacy with Blancheflour. I argue that the pagan queen's intimacy to the daughter of a Christian-European captive has enabled the queen to protect the girl as her adoptive daughter first and as a daughter-in-law second, namely contributing to her unreserved endorsement of the inter-racial-religious-class union between her only son, Floris, and Blancheflour. This is one major factor that distinguishes the relationship of the queen and Blancheflour in Floris from the dysfunctional relationships of mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law in the late medieval Constance romances, where women of different generations are strangers to each other, and no way is imagined for women of different races and religions to get along with each other.

  • This study compares how mother-daughter differentiation influences solidarity and relationship satisfaction between mothers-in-law and sons-in-law. The subjects of this study were 167 mothers-in-law (mean age, 59.6 years) paired with their sons-in-law (mean age, 36.9 years). Participants were given quantitative survey questionnaires on their relationships. Descriptive statistical analyses were conducted for the social and demographic characteristics of mothers-in-law and sons-in-law. Ordinary least square multiple regression analyses were also conducted to examine the level of mother-daughter differentiation, solidarity, and relationship satisfaction between mothers-in-law and sons-in-law. The results show that a higher age of the mothers-in-law results in lower relationship satisfaction between mothers-in-law and sons-in-law. Next, an increase the level of mother-daughter differentiation (which means more balance between intimacy and detachability) results in a higher overall solidarity, affectual solidarity, giving functional solidarity, and consensual solidarity between mothers-in-law and sons-in-law. However, there was no statistically significant difference in the receiving functional solidarity and normative solidarity between mothers-in-law and sons-in-law. Finally, the results show that a higher level of mother-daughter differentiation produces a higher relationship satisfaction between mothers-in-law and sons-in-law. The findings could provide a better understanding of inter-generational relationships in Korean family dynamics. The results also have implications for providing counseling for the development of healthy relationships between mothers-in-law and sons-in-law.

  • This study tries to figure out the communication types between a mother-in-law and a foreign daughter-in-law through their 'confrontational conversation.' For this, three episodes of 'Multicultural Mother-in-law and Daughter-in-law Biography' aired by EBS (Education Broadcasting System) were monitored. The dialogues between the mother-in-law and the foreign daughter-in-law were written down and analyzed. According to the result, there were 'dysfunctional communication' styles during their conversation. Theses styles deepened their conflict. Thus, to abate the conflict between the mother-in-law and the foreign daughter-in-law, this study suggested that it was necessary to develop the convergence counseling program and the family therapy for their functional communication.

  • Purpose: This descriptive study aims to analyze the effects of the satisfaction level in the relationship between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, conflicts between them, acculturative stress and stress coping strategies on elderly depression in multi-cultural families. Methods: The survey was conducted on 89 mothers-in-law, aged 65 or older, in multi-cultural families with a foreign daughter-in-law. Data were collected through structured questionnaires, and then were used to conduct t-test, ANOVA, correlation and multiple regression analyses using the statistical program SPSS 21.0. Results: This study found several factors contributing to depression of mothers-in-law in multi-cultural families. Those factors include living alone without a spouse, poor health, a high level of perceived discrimination and a passive reaction in terms of stress coping strategies. Conclusion: A sense of discrimination perceived by the mothers-in-law having a foreign daughter-in-law implies that the people around them and the community should make efforts to reject distorted perspectives and remove prejudice against foreign daughters-in-law. In addition, the mothers-in-law should receive education and training to use more active and positive stress coping strategies in a stressful situation with the foreign daughter-in-law.

Results: Older women with a foreign daughter-in-law showed negative correlation between quality of life related health and nutritional risk, stress and age, and positive correlation between Activities of Daily Living (ADL); 46% of variance in health related quality of life of older women with a foreign daughter-in-law was explained by nutritional risk, ADL, stress and occupation.
