  • This paper resents frequency distribution of annual maxima of daily rainfall, temperature and pressure at twelve major meteorological stations in South Korea based on avaliable series of annual maxima. As a first step a traditional way of estimating the probabilities of extremes using Jenkinson's method was used here. The results are presented in the form of graph giving the various recurrence periods of rainfall, temperature and pressure and the frequency distributions obtained are discussed.

  • A model for estimating daily effective rainfall of upland crops was developed. The infiltration process was described by Green-Ampt infiltration model developed by Chu(1978). The model considers delayed surface ponding and surface detention storage under a uniform soil profile. The Green-Ampt parameters, that is, average hydraulic conductivity and average capillary pressure head on a sandy loam soil were determined from field experiment using Air-entry permeameter developed by Bouwer(1966). The model was verified by comparing measured and simulated surface runoff. The ratios of effective rainfall to total rainfall for red pepper, soybean, sesame and Chinese cabbage were evaluated using Borg's root growth model( 1986) respectively. The followings are a summary of this study results; 1.In a sandy loam soil average hydraulic conductivity was 3.28cm/hr and average capillary pressure head was 3.00cm. 2.The root growth of upland crops could be expressed by Borg's root growth model successively. 3.The measured and simulated surface runoff was agreed well with each other. 4.As the rainfall amount was increased, the ratio of effective rainfall to total rainfall was decreased exponentially till a certain growing period.

  • According to 5th IPCC Climate Change Report, there is a very high likelihood that the frequency and intensity of extreme rainfall events will increase. In reality, flood damage has increased, and it is necessary to estimate the future probabilistic design rainfall amount that climate change is reflected. In this study, the future probabilistic design precipitation amount is estimated by analyzing trends of future annual maximum daily rainfall derived by RCP 8.5 scenarios and using the scale-invariance technique. In the first step, after reviewing the time-scale characteristics of annual maximum rainfall amounts for each duration observed from 60 sites operating in Korea Meterological Administration, the feasibility of the scale-invariance technique are examined using annual daily maximum rainfall time series simulated under the present climate condition. Then future probabilistic design rainfall amounts for several durations reflecting the effects of climate change are estimated by applying future annual maximum daily rainfall time series in the IDF curve equation derived by scale-invariance properties. It is shown that the increasing trend on the probabilistic design rainfall amount has resulted on most sites, but the decreasing trend in some regions has been projected.

  • This study is to suggest the SWAT model as inputs for the estimation of CN (Curve number) if we do not have hourly rainfall and runoff data in the ungaged watershed. The daily CNs were estimated by using SWAT model for Chungju dam watershed and the CNs by hourly rainfall and runoff data in the same period with daily CN estimation were also estimated. Then the daily and hourly CNs were compared each other. The CNs by SWAT model were larger than the actual CNs. 7.4% larger in AMC-I, 1.2% in AMC-II, and 6.3% in AMC-III respectively. If we consider various uncertainties in the estimation of CN, the error of 6.8% could be acceptable for the application in the field.

  • In this study, we developed a hybrid forecasting model based on a four-parameter distribution which allows a simultaneous season-ahead forecasting for both seasonal rainfall and sub-daily rainfall in Han-River and Geum-River basins. The proposed model is mainly utilized a set of time-varying predictors and the associated model parameters were estimated within a Bayesian nonstationary rainfall frequency framework. The hybrid forecasting model was validated through an cross-validatory experiment using the recent rainfall events during 2014~2017 in both basins. The seasonal precipitation results showed a good agreement with the observations, which is about 86.3% and 98.9% in Han-River basin and Geum-River basin, respectively. Similarly, for the extreme rainfalls at sub-daily scale, the results showed a good correspondence between the observed and simulated rainfalls with a range of 65.9~99.7%. Therefore, it can be concluded that the proposed model could be used to better consider climate variability at multiple time scales.

  • The study was focused on developing a new model to estimate annual runoff. This model can be used to estimate the available water resources for ungaged catchments for long-term water resources development planning. Data used in the model development were daily rainfall and daily runoff of the sample basin with record length from 1945 to 1988 years in Korea. The sample basin selected by consideration whether the flow is virgin and quality of discharge data is good. As a result, 46 stage gaging station were selected. Annual runoff was determined by sum of daily runoff calculated by daily stage data of the sample basin. Also, the annual mean precipitation by using daily rainfall data was estimated and the annual runoff ratio for each sample basin was calculated, and the annual mean runoff ratio was estimated. The linear regression model was proposed and calibrated using auunal mean precipitation values and geomorphological characteristics of the basins. To verify reasonableness of this model, the regression model was applied to the gaging stations which have historical data.

  • This study is to perform the rainfall-runoff analysis of the basin of Yongdam dam where is loacted in the Geumriver basin. The model used is the SAC-SMA model which was developed by U.S. National Weather Service. The Precipitation data used as the input data of the model are daily ones observed in 2002 and the mean of values recorded in 5 rainfall stations. The evaporation data are used observed in Daejeon meteorological station. The geographical data such as basin slope and stream gradient are elicited from the numerical map analysis. In the verification through the comparison of calculated daily inflow with observed one, parameters used in the model are estimated manually. As the result of verification, total annual calculated inflow is 13,547CMS and agree accurately with the observed one. During the period of one year of 2002, before 100 days and after 250 days, the soil moisture condition in the upper zone was significantly dry and in spite of the rainfall in this period, the runoff was not generated. Through this result, we can observe that the moisture condition in the soil affects strongly the runoff in a basin.

  • Two sites with different average daily traffic volume at an intersection were selected in order to investigate water quality of the first flushes in the surface runoffs. The effects of rainfall intensities and accumulated non-rainy days before rainfall events on the water quality were also delineated. Samples were collected at every 2 min. interval from each first flush from February to May, 2004 for 4 major rainfall events. $COD_{cr}$ or SS concentrations at the site with an average daily traffic volume (ADTV) of 23,000 vehicles were 2-7 times higher than those at the site with an ADTV of 1,400 vehicles. The longer the accumulated non-rainy days were, the higher the concentration of heavy metals were than those of $COD_{cr}$ and SS in the first flushes.

  • This paper proposed a new method for estimating missing values in time series rainfall data. The proposed method integrated the two most widely used estimation methods, general linear model(GLM) and ordinary kriging(OK), by taking a weighted average of covariance matrices derived from each of the two methods. The proposed method was cross-validated using daily rainfall data at thirteen rain gauges in the Hyeong-san River basin. The goodness-of-fit of the proposed method was higher than those of GLM and OK, which can be attributed to the weighting algorithm that was designed to minimize errors caused by violations of assumptions of the two existing methods. This result suggests that the proposed method is more accurate in missing values in time series rainfall data, especially in a region where the assumptions of existing methods are not met, i.e., rainfall varies by season and topography is heterogeneous.

  • This study aims to develop a multivariate daily rainfall simulation model considering spatial coherence across watershed. The existing Hidden Markov Model (HMM) has been mainly applied to single site case so that the spatial coherences are not properly addressed. In this regard, HMM coupled with Chow-Liu Tree (CLT) that is designed to consider inter-dependences across rainfall networks was proposed. The proposed approach is applied to Han-River watershed where long-term and reliable hydrologic data is available, and a rigorous validation is finally conducted to verify the model's capability. It was found that the proposed model showed better performance in terms of reproducing daily rainfall statistics as well as seasonal rainfall statistics. Also, correlation matrix across stations for observation and simulation was compared and examined. It was confirmed that the spatial coherence was well reproduced via CLT-HMM model.
