Objectives : This study was designed to evaluate the effects of traditional oriental therapies(TOT) on advanced gastric cancer(AGC) patient with metastasis to liver. Methods : We retrospectively analyzed the medical record of a case of AGC patient in stage IV with metastasis to liver who had been treated with TOT for 5 months continuously in East-West Cancer Center of Oriental Hospital of Daejeon University from 5 March 2003 through 22 July 2003. Results : After treated with TOT for the 5 months, most of symptoms were disappeared or improved and tumor size was decreased on abdominal CT compared with the previous result. The hematological results and tumor markers were not increased. Conclusions : From the above results, it could be suggested that TOT have effects on improving symptoms and quality of life as a supportive or curative therapy for AGC patients.

This study was conducted to investigate the prevalence of honey bee (Apis mellifera) disease in Daejeon. From May to September in 2014, 63 samples were collected from 63 apiculture farms in the regions and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was conducted. A total of 11 infectious pathogens, including 6 virus, 2 bacteria, 2 fungi, and 1 parasite, were investigated in honeybee colonies suffering from symptom of sudden collapse, depopulation or paralysis. The infectious pathogens and infection rates among 63 honeybee colonies detected were as follows: sacbrood virus (12.7%), chronic bee paralysis virus (1.6%), stonebrood (11.1%), American foulbrood (19.0%), European foulbrood (6.3%), respectively. The result indicate that foul-brood was most prevalent disease in apiculture farms in Daejeon area.

Aim : To evaluate the pharmaceutical safety of the herbal formula Myelophil, composed of Astragali Radix and Salviae Radix, via systemic subacute toxicological study using SD rats. Methods : Forty male and 40 female SD rats were fed with Myelophil (5000, 2500 or 1250 mg/10 mL/kg) or distilled water for four weeks. Adverse effects were examined intensively by comparing the differences between normal and drug-administered groups using clinical signs, necropsies, histopathologic findings, hematology, urinalysis, and blood biochemical analysis. Results : No altered clinical symptoms including body weight, diarrhea, anorexia, death, and abnormal necropsy of major organs were observed in male or female rats. No drug-induced abnormalities in histopathological finding, hematological values, urinalysis, and blood biochemical values were found at any doses of Myelophil. Conclusion : Myelophil should be very safe when used in a clinical application with a wide therapeutic index.

AIzelin (1) and quercitrin (2) isolated from the EtOAc-soluble fraction of the leaves of Litsea japonica Jussieu (Lauraceae) showed inhibitory activity against classical pathway complement system with 50% inhibitory concentration ($IC_{50}$/) values of 112.2 and 198.2 $\mu\textrm{g}$/$m\ell$. respectively. For the structure-activity relationship of flavonoids on anti-complement system. myricitrin (3) from JUQ/ans mandshurica Maximowicz (Juglandaceae) also tested anti-complement activity. while this was devoid of any significant activity.
