  • An investigation has been made of a viscous incompressible flow in a circular cylindrical tank. The flow is driven by the spinning bottom disk of tank together with/without central injection and radial uniform-ejection through the sidewall. Numerical solutions of steady and unsteady flows to 3-dimensional Navier-Stokes equation were obtained for several cases of injection strength. In a moderate flow rate of injection, the mass transfer occurs through the boundary layers but, as the flow rate increases, the inner region far from the container walls takes part in mass transfer.

  • A Navier-Stokes equation solver for incompressible viscous flows with free surface is developed and tested. This is based upon a fractional time step method and a non-staggered finite volume formulation for unstructured meshes. For time advancement scheme, Adams -Bashforth method for convective term and Crank-Nicolson method for diffusive term are applied. The interface between two fluids with different fluid properties is tracked with Piecewise Linear Interface Calculation(PLIC) Volume-of-Fluid(VOF) methods. Computational results are presented for some test problems: the broken dam, the sloshing in a rectangular tank, the filling of a cylindrical tank.

  • This paper is studied on the Junctiion of the large tank and the cylinderical outlet such as a pressure vessel attached a pipe or nozzle theoretically. It is assumed that the diameter of tank is much larger than that of the nozzle, so it can be approximated that nozzle is attached to plate. The analysis procedure can be viewed as the solution of interdependent subproblems: (a) the stress analysis of the cylinderical shell(nozzle), (b) the plane-stress analysis of the plate membrane problem, and (c) the analysis of the transverse bending deformation in the plate. On the procedure of (a), the Flugge formula are used, and the variables are the length and the ratio of the thickness to the radius of cylinderical shell. The solutions of thess problems are interrelated in the total solution through continuity and equilibrium conditions at the interface of middle planes of the plate and cylinderical shell.

  • In the present study, a towed underwater particle image velocimetry (PIV) system was validated in uniform flow and used to investigate the free-surface effects on the turbulent wake of a simple surface-piercing body. The selected test model was a cylindrical geometry formed by extruding the Wigley hull's waterplane shape in the vertical direction. Due to the constraints of the two-dimensional (2D) PIV system used for the present study, the velocity field measurements were done separately for the vertical and horizontal planes. Using the measured data at several different locations, it was possible to identify the free-surface effects on the turbulent wake in terms of the mean velocity components and turbulence quantities. In order to provide an accuracy level of the data, uncertainty assessment was done following the International Towing Tank Conference standard procedure.

  • This paper is studied on the junction stress of the large tank and the cylindrical outlet such as a pressure vessel attached to a pope or nozzle theoretically. It is assumed that the diameter of tank is much larger than that of the nozzle cylinder, so it can be approximated that nozzle cylinder is attached to plate. As the current nozzle shape is manufactured as "Through Type" to reduce the stress concentration around the nozzle junction part of pressure vessel, a theoretical analysis on the cylinder with finite length should be performed to accomodate this fact. Each theoretical optimal values were obtained through the analysis of stress concentration caused by the variation of cylinder length and thickness, and these results were estimated by performing FEM Analysis. • Cryogenic LNG(Liquefied Natural Gas) which is stored in the cylindrical storage tanks of $100,000m^{3}$ has very complex flow phenomena and the changes of thermal properties with exterior conditions and operation mdoes. These complex thermofluid behaviors are affected by the storage, exterior conditions of LNG, design specifications and heat transfer characteristics of tanks, Also, those have influence on the stable storage and supply of LNG in the storage tanks. Thus this study performed the analysis on the 2-D heat transfer of the tank with exterior conditions, on the Cool Down Process in order to cool down the LNG Storage Tank at the initial normal state, and on the Filling Process considered for incoming and rising of LNG. The analysis on the Mixing LNG Storage was studied too. At last, the visualized program on the complex thermofluidodynamic analysis was developed on the basis of the above analyses. The development of this program becomes to be used to the basic design of the commercial tanks as well as to assure technical skill of the analysis on the thermal stability of the stored LNG in the LNG Storage Tank.

  • A compartment model of the flow driven by pumping without valves (valveless pumping) in an open tank system is proposed. By the open tank system, we mean that two rigid cylindrical tanks are connected with an elastic tube. An incompressible fluid fills this system up to a certain level in tanks under the gravity. The compartment model for analyzing such open system is derived from the energy principle which will be called the energy conserving compartment model or shortly the ECCM. Based on this ECCM of valveless pumping, we explore the occurrence of directional net flow or directional net power by a specific excitation at an asymmetric part of the elastic tube. The interaction between deformable elastic tube and the fluid inside is considered in the ECCM. The reliability of the ECCMis investigated through some physical examples. The ECCM shows the existence of directional net power of the valveless pump system with open tanks and confirms that the direction and magnitude of the net power depend on the pumping frequency as well. Furthermore, the phase synchronization in time between the fluid pressure difference and the external pinching force over the pumping region is highly related to the direction of energy storing or net power.

  • The study on ice thermal storage system is to improve total system performance in actual air-conditioning facilities. To attain the high efficiencies in ice thermal storage system, the improvement of thermal stratification is essential, therfore the process flow must be piston flow in thermal storage tank. Ice packing factor is better on condition that the inflowing temperature is low, the flow direction in the thermal storage is upward and the cylindericalthermal storage type is used. This result shows that the cylinderical ice storage tank has better storage capacity than the rectangular type in case of the same porocity.

  • The study on ice thermal storage system is to improve total system performance and increase the economical efficiency in actual all-conditioning facilities. To obtain the high charging and discharging efficiencies in ice thermal storage system, the improvement of thermal stratification is essential, therefore the process flow must be piston flow in the cylindrical type. With the relation of the aspect ratio(H/D) in the storage tank, the stratification is formed better as inlet flow rate is smaller. If the inlet and the outlet port are settled at the upside and downside of the storage tank, higher storage rate could be obtainable. In case that the flow directions inside the thermal storage tank are the upward flow in charging and the downward in discharging, thermal stratification is improved because the thermocline thickness is maitained thin and the degree of stratification increases respectively. In the charging process, in case of inlet flow rate the thermal stratification has a tendency to be improved with the lower flow rate and smaller temperature gradient in case of inlet temperature, the large temperature difference between inflowing water and storage water are influenced from the thermal conduction. The effect of the reference temperature difference is seen differently in comparison with the former study for chilled and hot water. In the discharging process, the thermal stratification is improved by the effect of the thermal stratification of the charging process.

  • The construction of LNG storage tanks has been increased due to the expansion of LNG demand. LNG tanks which consist of an inner cylindrical 9%Ni metal tank and reinforced concrete, are insulated with perlite powder and resilient blanket for absorbing the perlite pressure in insulation annulus between two inner and outer tanks. This study tries to find out the design specifications and characteristics for blanket thickness and design pressure. The results show that the design basis for the blanket thickness should be approximately 30% to 40% of annulus width and the design pressure be applied below 2,200~2,700Pa with blanket thickness.
