Coupling effects of vortex-induced vibration for a square cylinder at various angles of attack

  • Vortex-induced vibration (VIV) is a significant concern when designing slender structures with square cross sections. VIV strongly depends on structural dynamics and flow states, which depend on the conditions of the approaching flow and shape of a structure. Therefore, the effects of the angle of attack on the coupling effects of VIV for a square cylinder are expected to be significant in practice. In this study, the aerodynamic forces for a fixed and elastically mounted square cylinder were measured using wind pressure tests. Aerodynamic forces on the stationary cylinder are firstly discussed by comparisons of variation of statistical aerodynamic force and wind pressure coefficient with wind angle of attack. The coupling effect between the aerodynamic forces and the motion of the oscillating square cylinder by VIV is subsequently investigated in detail at typical wind angels of attack with occurrence of three typical flow regimes, i.e., leading-edge separation, separation bubble (reattachment), and attached flow. The coupling effect are illustrated by discussing the onset of VIV, characteristics of aerodynamic forces during VIV, and interaction between motion and aerodynamic forces. The results demonstrate that flow states can be classified based on final separation points or the occurrence of reattachment. These states significantly influence coupling effects of the oscillating cylinder. Vibration enhances vortex shedding, which creates strong fluctuations in aerodynamic forces. However, differences in the lock-in range, aerodynamic force, and interaction process for angles of attack smaller and larger than the critical angle of attack revealed noteworthy characteristics in the VIV of a square cylinder.

수압파쇄시험 해석을 위한 중공원통 인장시험과 압열인장시험 화강암 인장강도 비교 (Comparison of Tensile Strengths in Granite Using Brazilian Tests and Hollow Cylinder Tests for Hydraulic Fracturing Test Interpretation)

  • 수압파쇄법으로 최대수평주응력 크기 규명에 필요한 요소 중 하나인 암반의 인장강도를 측정하는 방법에 대해 연구하였다. 석모도 시추공에서 회수한 화강암 시료에 대해 두 가지 실내시험(중공원통 인장시험 및 압열인장시험)으로 인장강도를 측정하고 두 결과가 차이를 보이는지 비교하였다. 중공원통 인장시험에서는 높은 수압증가율 상태에서 더 높은 인장강도를 보여, 현장의 수압파쇄시험에서 보인 수압 증가율 상태에서 측정된 인장강도나 그 증가율로 보정된 인장강도를 이용해야한다는 점을 보였다. 인장강도에 대한 수압 증가율 효과와 크기효과를 보정하면 중공원통 인장시험 결과는 압열인장시험 결과와 유사하게 나타났으며 이는 수압파쇄 인장강도를 위해 압열인장강도를 이용할 수도 있다는 점을 시사한다.

  • Recently, it was predicted that the size of offshore markets will grow as gas prices edge up. This paper presents experimental results for using strings as a suppression device on a circular cylinder and discusses the various data. A test model was used to investigate the role of strings by varying the thickness of the strings used to suppress a cylinder's lateral force taking into account the effect of turbulence promoted. A substantial amount of experimental data were taken from experiments performed on cylinders at Reynolds number up to a maximum value of $10^5$. The suppression of vortex shedding and a lateral force reduction of up to 70% were observed for the cylinder with strings.

PEC 원통을 TE EFIE 방법으로 산란 해석한 결과의 수렴율 (Convergence rates of the TE EFIE scattering solutions from a PEC cylinder)

  • 모멘트법(MoM)인 TE(transversw electric) 전장 적분 방정식(EFIE)으로 완전 전기도체(PEC) 원통을 산란 해석하였다. 이 과정에서 나타나는 특이점(singlarity)과 과대 특이점(hypersingularity)을 포함한 적분 계산은 어렵기 때문에 수치해석 방법으로 특이점을 고립시켜 자체항(self-term)을 얻었다. 모멘트법에서 base 함수와 test 함수의 선택은 수치해석 결과의 정확도와 수렴에 있어 매우 중요한 요인이됨은 알려져 있는 사실이다. basis 함수와 test함수를 달리하여 세 가지 방법으로 PEC 원통에 유도된 전류를 구하였다. 이렇게 구한 결과를 해석학적 방법과 모멘트법에서 얻은 전류와 비교하여 상대 효율 전류 오차를 구하였으며 어떤 결합 방법이 효율적인지 확인하였다. 또한 각 결합방법에 따른 상대 효율 전류 오차의 수렴율을 구하여 가장 정확한 결과를 얻을 조건을 찾았다. 전류 오차의 가장 빠른 수렴오더(order of convergence) 2.528은 펄스 base 함수/델타 test 함수 결함 조건에서 얻었다.

폐쇄형 풍동 시험부내의 원형 실린더 유동에 대한 비정상 벽면효과 연구 (Unsteady Wall Interference Effect on Flows around a Circular Cylinder in Closed Test-Section Wind Tunnels)

  • 풍동 시험부 비정상 벽면효과에 대한 연구를 위해 폐쇄형 시험부내의 원형 실린더 주위 유동장에 대한 수치적 연구를 수행하였다. 수치기법은 Roe의 flux-difference-splitting을 사용한 격자점 중심 유한체적법과 이중시간 전진 기법을 사용하는 내재적 시간적분법을 사용하였다. 계산 결과 폐쇄형 시험부에는 실린더 주위 비정상 유동장에 압력구배를 강화시켜 실린더의 양력 및 항력의 진폭을 크게 하고, 실린더 뒷전에서의 기저압력을 작게 하여 항력을 증가시키는 벽면효과가 있음을 확인하였다. 또한, 이러한 시험부 벽면은 실린더 와류 shedding 주파수를 커지게 하는 효과가 있다. 시험부 벽면에서의 압력은 벽면효과가 포함된 shedding 주파수를 기본으로 하는 고조파 현상을 보인다.

  • Investigators who study on combustion in the cylinders of reciprocating piston type internal combustion engines have been encountered embarrassments due to the difficulties of adjusting specific parameter without interfacing other parameters such as cylinder wall temperature composition of gas in the cylinder existence of cylinder lubricant etc. Rapid compression-expansion machine the position and speed of piston of which are able to be controlled by means of a system controlled electrically and speed of piston of which are able to be controlled by means of a system controlled electrically and actuated hydraulically could be utilized as one of the most preferable countermeasures against those difficulties. Several units of rapid compression-expansion machines were developed but the speed up of frequency of piston movement still is the problem to be improved to cope with actual speed of internal combustion engines. Authors designed and manufactured a new rapid compression-expansion machine electrically controlled hydraulically actuated and computer programed and then examined the performance of one. Results of a set of experiments revealed acquirements of certain improvement of frequency of piston movement preserving the stability of system response and reproducing accurate compression ratio of cylinder those are the key function for the in-cylinder combustion experiments of internal combustion engines.

구조해석을 이용한 수소 연료전지 자동차 압력용기 밸브의 안전성 평가 (Safety Evaluation Based on Structural Analysis of Cylinder Valves for Fuel Cell Vehicles)

  • Green vehicles include electric vehicles, natural gas vehicles, and fuel cell vehicles (FCVs). In FCVs, pressure vessels have cylinder valves to control hydrogen flow. These valves should be of high quality in terms of safety because hydrogen is stored at ultra-high pressure in pressure vessels. Hence, safety evaluation of these valves is necessary to secure the safety of the FCV. A structural analysis of the cylinder valve was conducted in this study by using a commercial finite element analysis code. The results showed that the safety factor of valve component ranged 1.06-186.44. After categorizing, the stress components at critical points of the cylinder valve parts were evaluated using the corresponding allowable design criteria in the ASME code. The pressurization cycle test was performed as per the regulation to evaluate the safety of the valve.

  • In this paper, the wave run.up on a vertical cylinder is presented. Various cross sections of a cylinder were simulated using the panel method for various wave periods. Two.dimensional model tests were performed in a wave flume. The simulation results are compared with the test results. The simulation is based on the linear diffraction theory.

  • 복합재료의 비파괴 검사 방법에 관한 연구는 복합재료의 신뢰성 및 안전성을 개선시키는데 매우 중요하다. AE기법은 소성변형, 섬유파손, 모재균열 또는 박리에 의해 생성되는 탄성파에서 감지되는 변형 에너지를 감지하여 결함을 평가하는 기법이다. 본 논문에서는 외부 수압을 받는 필라멘트 와인딩 복합재 원통과 샌드위치 원통의 수압시험이 수행되었고, PVDF센서로부터 측정된 AE 신호특성을 분석하였다. 또한, L-C 동조회로와 Band-pass filter 회로를 가진 AE 신호분석기를 설계, 제작 하였으며, 필라멘트 와인딩 원통과 샌드위치 원통에 대한 수압실험에서 제작된 AE 신호분석기의 균열 검출 능력을 평가하였다.
