  • This study investigates the effects of loading frequency (f) and specimen size on the liquefaction resistance of clean sand. A series of cyclic direct simple shear tests were conducted on Jumunjin sand with varying consolidated relative densities (40% and 80%), f values (0.05, 0.10, and 0.20 Hz), and diameter to height (D/H) ratios (3.63, 3.18, 2.82, and 2.54). The results demonstrated the significant influence of f and D/H ratio on the number of cycles to liquefaction (Ncyc-liq) and the cyclic resistance ratio (CRR15). It was observed that increasing f linearly increased Ncyc-liq. Increasing the specimen height also led to higher Ncyc-liq values irrespective of the f or relative density. Moreover, a positive correlation between CRR15 and f indicated that higher f yielded higher CRR15. This relationship was more pronounced in dense sand than in loose sand. Specimen height also significantly affected CRR15, with increasing the specimen height resulting in higher CRR15 values. Furthermore, the effect of f on CRR15 was less significant compared to the influence of specimen height. The effect of f on the normalized cyclic resistance ratio (NCRR) was relatively negligible for loose sand but more substantial for dense sand depending on the D/H ratio. Data analysis revealed that the NCRR generally decreases as the D/H ratio increases. An interpolation formula was provided to calculate the NCRR based on the D/H ratio regardless of the f and relative density.

  • There are many kinds of protection methods for marine structures, with varyingeconomical and environmental advantages. The coating protection method is being widely used in both continental and marine structures. In this study, by adding some additives, such as Zn powder(Zn), carbon black(CB) to epoxy anti-corrosive paint, the effect on the corrosion resistance was investigated throughan electrochemical method. The additive of Zn(20)+CB(10) showed the lowest passivity current density. Polarization resistance in both cyclic voltammogram and impedance measurement of an additive of Zn(20)+CB(10) was also the largest value, compared to other additives. Furthermore, rusting and bubbling was not observed on the surface of the test specimen with the additive of Zn(20)+CB(10), compared to other specimens. It is suggested that the corrosion resistance of the anti-corrosive paint can be improved by using some additives.

  • An electrochemical evaluation on the corrosion resistance for heavy anticorrosive paint was carried out for 5 kinds of heavy anticorrosive paints such as High solid epoxy(HE), Solvent epoxy(SE), Tar epoxy(TE), Phenol epoxy(PE), and Ceramic epoxy(CE) as parameters of DFT(Dry Film Thickness, 25${\mu}m$50${\mu}m$, solution condition(Flow of Nonflow). Corrosion current density of HE(DFT 50${\mu}m$ in case of flow condition was larger than that of nonflow condition. However, their values of the other anticorrosive paints were decreased compared to the nonflow condition. The values of AC impedance were increased with increasing of DFT regardless of kinds of anticorrosive paints. And the polarization resistance of cyclic voltammogram showed a good tendency to correspond with well the values of AC impedance measurement. HE and CE had a relatively good corrosion resistance than other heavy anticorrosive paint.

  • Objectives: This study compared the cyclic fatigue resistance of One Curve (C wire) and F6 Skytaper (conventional austenite nickel-titanium [NiTi]), and 2 instruments with thermos-mechanically treated NiTi: Protaper Next X2 (M wire) and Hyflex CM (CM wire). Materials and Methods: Ten new instruments of each group (size: 0.25 mm, 6% taper in the 3 mm tip region) were tested using a rotary bending machine with a 60° curvature angle and a 5 mm curvature radius, at room temperature. The number of cycles until fracture was recorded. The length of the fractured instruments was measured. The fracture surface of each fragment was examined with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and the post hoc Tukey test. The significance level was set at 0.05. Results: At 60°, One Curve, F6 Skytaper and Hyflex CM had significantly longer fatigue lives than Protaper Next X2 (p < 0.05). No statistically significant differences were found in the cyclic fatigue lives of One Curve, F6 Skytaper, and Hyflex CM (p > 0.05). SEM images of the fracture surfaces of the different instruments showed typical features of fatigue failure. Conclusions: Within the conditions of this study, at 60° and with a 5 mm curvature radius, the cyclic fatigue life of One Curve was not significantly different from those of F6 Skytaper and Hyflex CM. The cyclic fatigue lives of these 3 instruments were statistically significantly longer than that of Protaper Next.

  • The purpose of this study is to find the influence of interface and confinement on bond between reinforcing steel and concrete subjected to monotonic and cyclic loading. The key variables for the experimental program include rib height, rib spacing for reinforcing bars and confinement. From the results obtained in this study, the following main observations can be made for the bond properties. Bond strength increases when confinement increases under monotonic and cyclic loading. Bond stiffness and strength drop remarkably after the maximum bond strength. Both bond stiffness and strength also drop at a constant slip when the number of cyclic loading increase. The bond resistance subjected to cyclic loading decreases significantly for reinforcing bars with low rib height.

  • Fretting is a kind of surface degradation mechanism observed in mechanical components and structures. When two pieces of materials, pressed together by an external static load, are subjected to a transverse cyclic loading or various vibrations, so that one contacting face is relatively displaced cyclically parallel to the other face, wear of the mating surfaces occurs. These fretting damages may be observed in electrical connectors for automotive components, where there are special environments and various vibration conditions. This study aims to evaluate the usefulness of fretting test equipment that was developed for reliability test of electrical connector. Fretting tests were carried out using tin coated connectors and friction force, contact resistance, contact area and roughness of contact region were investigated. The following results that will be helpful to understand the fretting wear mechanism, increase process the contact resistance and contact area were obtained. (1) In the same frequency and slip amplitude, the friction force, roughness and contact area increased rapidly until about $10^3$ cycles, after which it was slightly changed. (2) In the various frequency and slip amplitude, the contact area increased with slip amplitude and cyclic numbers, but it did not depend on cyclic frequency. (3) The surface roughness of contact region did not depend on the cyclic frequency. From these results, the applicability of the fretting wear test equipment and reliability of connector were discussed.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of glide path preparation with PathFile and ProGlider nickel-titanium (NiTi) files on the cyclic fatigue resistance of WaveOne NiTi files. Materials and Methods: Forty-four WaveOne Primary files were used and divided into four groups (n = 11). In the first group (0 WaveOne), the WaveOne Primary files served as a control group and were not used on acrylic blocks. In the 1 WaveOne Group, acrylic blocks were prepared using only WaveOne Primary files, and in the PF+WaveOne group and PG+WaveOne groups, acrylic blocks were first prepared with PathFile or ProGlider NiTi files, respectively, followed by the use of WaveOne Primary files. All the WaveOne Primary files were then subjected to cyclic fatigue testing. The number of cycles to failure was calculated and the data were statistically analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Tukey honest significant difference multiple-comparison test at a 5% significance level. Results: The highest number of cycles to failure was found in the control group, and the lowest numbers were found in the 1 WaveOne group and the PF+WaveOne group. Significant differences were found among the 1 WaveOne, PF+WaveOne, and control groups (p < 0.05). No statistically significant differences were found between the PG+WaveOne group and the other three groups (p > 0.05). Conclusion: Glide path preparation with NiTi rotary files did not affect the cyclic fatigue resistance of WaveOne Primary files used on acrylic blocks.

  • Objectives: To evaluate the mechanical properties and metallurgical characteristics of the M3 Rotary and M3 Pro Gold files (United Dental). Materials and Methods: One hundred and sixty new M3 Rotary and M3 Pro Gold files (sizes 20/0.04 and 25/0.04) were used. Torque and angle of rotation at failure (n = 20) were measured according to ISO 3630-1. Cyclic fatigue resistance was tested by measuring the number of cycles to failure in an artificial stainless steel canal ($60^{\circ}$ angle of curvature and a 5-mm radius). The metallurgical characteristics were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance and the Student-Newman-Keuls test. Results: Comparing the same size of the 2 different instruments, cyclic fatigue resistance was significantly higher in the M3 Pro Gold files than in the M3 Rotary files (p < 0.001). No significant difference was observed between the files in the maximum torque load, while a significantly higher angular rotation to fracture was observed for M3 Pro Gold (p < 0.05). In the DSC analysis, the M3 Pro Gold files showed one prominent peak on the heating curve and 2 prominent peaks on the cooling curve. In contrast, the M3 Rotary files showed 1 small peak on the heating curve and 1 small peak on the cooling curve. Conclusions: The M3 Pro Gold files showed greater flexibility and angular rotation than the M3 Rotary files, without decrement of their torque resistance. The superior flexibility of M3 Pro Gold files can be attributed to their martensite phase.
