  • In this paper, a method for generating the planar developments of three-dimensional shoe upper surfaces is proposed. This method is based on the optimization technique minimizing the geometric error occurred on the developed planar surface. Additionally, a rapid mapping algorithm to transform a curve on flattened plane to original surface (or vice versa) is proposed. These techniques are implemented on the 2D/3D integrated shoe design system. Using this system, a prototype running shoe can be designed more precisely and can be manufactured more quickly.

  • Radiation therapy using flattening filter free beam can prevent beam attenuation caused by flattening filter and can improve treatment efficiency. However, accurate dose control is not established for nonuniform iso dose distributions. In this study, curved dosimeter based on photoconductive material $HgI_2$ was fabricated and its reproducibility and linearity were evaluated at 6 MV photon energy to verify its performance. In order to show the usefulness of the curved measurement, the signals measured on the flat substrate and the curved substrate were compared in the flattening filter free beam using the acrylic filter. As a result, the reproducibility of the unit cell dosimeter was evaluated as SE 0.613%, and the linearity was evaluated as R-sq 0.9999. The usability evaluation of the array curve dosimeter demonstrated its usefulness by indicating a curvature error rate of 11.073%p and a reduced error rate.

  • Background: The median nerve cross-sectional area (MNCSA) is a useful morphological parameter for the evaluation of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). However, there have been limited studies investigating the anatomical basis of median nerve flattening. Thus, to evaluate the connection between median nerve flattening and CTS, we carried out a measurement of the median nerve thickness (MNT). Methods: Both MNCSA and MNT measurement tools were collected from 20 patients with CTS, and from 20 control individuals who underwent carpal tunnel magnetic resonance imaging (CTMRI). We measured the MNCSA and MNT at the level of the hook of hamate on CTMRI. The MNCSA was measured on the transverse angled sections through the whole area. The MNT was measured based on the most compressed MNT. Results: The mean MNCSA was 9.01 ± 1.94 ㎟ in the control group and 6.58 ± 1.75 ㎟ in the CTS group. The mean MNT was 2.18 ± 0.39 mm in the control group and 1.43 ± 0.28 mm in the CTS group. Receiver operating characteristics curve analysis demonstrated that the optimal cut-off value for the MNCSA was 7.72 ㎟, with 75.0% sensitivity, 75.0% specificity, and an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.82 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.69-0.95). The best cut off-threshold of the MNT was 1.76 mm, with 85% sensitivity, 85% specificity, and an AUC of 0.94 (95% CI, 0.87-1.00). Conclusions: Even though both MNCSA and MNT were significantly associated with CTS, MNT was identified as a more suitable measurement parameter.

  • We have studied the dosimetric properties of electron beam using Lyon intraoperative device for intraoperative radiation therapy. The dosimetry data had compiled in such a way that a quick and correct decision regarding the cone shape, energy, and accurate calculations could be made. Using 3 dimensional water phantom, we have got the following data: cone output ratios, surface dose, $d_{max}$, $d_{90}$, flatness, symmetry, beam profiles, isodose curve, and SSD correction factors. The cone output ratios were measured with straight and bevelled cone, respectively. As the cone size and the energy were reduced, the cone output ratios decreased rapidly. With the flattening filter, the surface dose increased by electron beam to $85.3\%$, $89.2\%$, and $93.4\%$, for 6 MeV, 9 MeV, and 12 MeV, respectively. It is important to increase the surface dose to $90\%$ or more. Inspite of diminishing dose rate and beam penetration, this flattening filter increases the treatment volume significantly. With the combination of the three levels collimation and the flattening filter, we achieved good homogeneity of the beam and better flatness and the diameter of the 90$\%$ isodose curve was increased. It is important to increase the area that is included in the $90\%$ isodose level. The value of measured and calculated SSD correction factors did not agree over the clinically important range from 100 cm to 110 cm.

  • The heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of heat exchangers with louver fins were experimentally investigated. The samples had small fin pitches (1.0 mm to 1.4 mm), and experiments were conducted up to a very low frontal air velocity (as low as 0.3 m/s). At a certain Reynolds number (critical Reynolds number), the flattening of the heat transfer coefficient curve was observed. The critical Reynolds number was insensitive to the louver angle, and decreased as the louver pitch to fin pitch ratio (L$_{p}$F$_{p}$) decreased. Existing correlations on the critical Reynolds number did not adequately predict the data. It is suggested that, for proper assessment of the heat transfer behavior, the louver pattern in addition to the flow characterization need to be considered. The heat transfer coefficient increased as the fin pitch decreased. At low Reynolds numbers, however, the trend was reversed. Possible explanation is provided considering the louver pattern between neighboring fins. Different from the heat transfer coefficient, the friction factor did not show the flattening characteristic. The reason may be attributed to the form drag by louvers, which offsets the decreased skin friction at a low Reynolds number. The friction factor increased as the fin pitch decreased and the louver angle increased. A new correlation predicted 92% of the heat transfer coefficient and 90% of the friction factor within $\pm$10%.10%.

  • Using the Schwarzschild's linear programming technique, we obtained the general solutions of the collisionless Bolzmann equation describing the spherical galaxy in dynamical equilibrium. From this calculation we have confirmed the existence of isotropic spherical galaxies obeying a de Vaucouleurs'law which includes a dark halo. The flattening profile of the velocity dispersion curve seen in the elliptical galaxies can be explained as the increase of mass to light ratio in this dark matter. The space density distribution of this dark matter shows that the core radius of the dark matter is smaller than the effective radius of the galaxy.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a plausible methodology based on experimental data how to set up darts and split lines on 3D parametric body dressed with tight-fit garment. The results were as following: Through the process of making convex hull, the concave parts were straightened to make a convex hull, especially in the center part of bust, under breast part and scapular part. To figure out the optimum positions of darts and split lines, the inflection points of curve ratio were searched along the horizontal polylines of waist and bust. This procedures produced reliable results with low deviation. Using Rapidform, CATIA and Unigraphics, six patches of bodice patterns were drawn and aligned. Paired t-test results showed the outline and area between 3D surface and 2D were not significantly different, meaning this method could be adaptable when flattening 3D surfaces. The amount of waist dart measured on the pattern showed that the highest portion was allocated on 2nd dart(back), followed by 1st dart(back), 1st dart(front), 2nd dart(front)/side dart, and center back dart. A series of findings suggested that curve ration inflection point could be used as a guide to set up darts and split line on 3D parametric model with low deviation.

  • Background and Objectives To assess the effectiveness of overnight orthokeratology (OK) in myopia using a new contact lens design over a one-month wearing period. Materials and Methods Participants were required to have myopia between -3.00 and -7.50D and astigmatism ≤ 2.00 D to participate in the study. The participants underwent OK with the White OK lens® (Interojo, Pyungtek, Korea), which has a 6-curve lens design. Participants were assessed at weeks 1, 2, and 4 using slit-lamp bio-microscopy, and tested for refraction, uncorrected distance visual acuity, and corneal topography. Success was defined as achieving a Logarithm of the Minimum Angle of Resolution (logMAR) ≤ 0.1. Results A total of 46 eligible subjects with a mean age of 23.11 ± 7.89 years were recruited. Baseline logMAR was 1.18 ± 0.30 and a consistent decrease in logMAR was observed from week 1 to week 4. The success rate was 95.35% at week 4. The mean sphere significantly decreased from a mean pre-fitting value of -4.58 ± 1.28 D to a mean value of -0.65 ± 0.69 D at week 4 (p < 0.0001). Statistically significant corneal flattening was detected during keratometry at week 4. Conclusion Overnight OK with the White OK lens is effective for the correction of moderate and high myopia with astigmatism over a one-month wearing period.

  • The absorbed dose and contaminant electron distribution of therapeutic X-ray beam (15MV photon) was studied with a half blocked beams of 30$\times$30$\textrm{cm}^2$ and field size ranging from 5$\times$5 to 30$\times$30$\textrm{cm}^2$. For a 15MV photon beam energy, the value of the depth of dose maximum, d$_{max}$, gradually decrease with increasing field size from 5$\times$5 to 30$\times$30$\textrm{cm}^2$ due to mainly by contaminant electrons which are produced in the flattening filter and scattered by collimator jaws, tray holder〔Lucite〕, blocking block and air. The results suggest that separate dosimetry data should be kept for blocked and unblocked field. The inherence of the contaminant electrons to the open field depth of maximum dose can lead to mistaken results if attenuation measurements are made at that depth. A nurmerous contaminant electrons mainly were distributed as shape of corn in the central photon beam and their path length in the water were shorter than 30mm because of the electrons energy having around 6MeV. These results clearly appears that the substraction of scattered electrons (electrons and positrons) from the total depth dose curve not only lowers the absolute dose in the bulidup region and surface dose, it also causes a shift of d$_{max}$ to a deeper depth. In the terapeutic high energy photon beam, the absorbed dose near the buildup region is the combined result of incident contaminant electrons and phantom generated electronsrons.
