  • This paper is to make strides toward an enriched understanding of the difficulties and issues raised by applying the 7th mathematics curriculum to elementary school classrooms. A general overview of the curriculum is presented in line with teaching and learning methods emphasized in the curriculum. Four classroom episodes are presented in brief in order to diagnose the problems in situating the curriculum in elementary mathematics classrooms. These episodes deal with lessons emphasizing activity rather than its associated concepts or principles, overusing multimedia data, pursuing play rather than its associated thinking, and distributing various individual worksheets in the name of differentiated instructional methods. In addition to the episodes, interview data with elementary school teachers also are presented as needed. This paper discusses two aspects of activating the curriculum into elementary mathematics classrooms. One deals with the issues of the curriculum and textbooks themselves, and the other covers those of research trends on mathematics education and teaching practices. This paper finally emphasizes a collaborative working relation among classroom teachers, mathematics educators, and policy makers with their own places and roles.

  • This study aimed to analyze the debate on the Elementary School Mathematics Contents in the new National Elementary Mathematics Curriculum developed in 2006. With this, the feature of the new National Mathematics Curriculum compared with the past 7th National Elementary Mathematics Curriculum was investigated. And the drafts on developing the new National Elementary Mathematics Curriculum were investigated as well. Three main controversies were identified. The first controversy was related to the item which had been dealt in middle school curriculum and moved to elementary school in the new National Mathematics Curriculum (e.g. equations, direct proportion and inverse proportion). The second one was related to the order of teaching fraction. The third one was related to the fact that problem solving became one of the five domains in Elementary School Mathematics Curriculum. Those controversies came from a basic belief on the ranges and depths of elementary school mathematics, didactical point of view, or thoughts on what should the content in the National Mathematics Curriculum be. The issues and suggestions that were discussed in this paper might serve to improve the National Mathematics Curriculum.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the perceptions and needs of the 2015 revised curriculum for elementary school teachers and to draw implications for the application of the 2015 revised mathematics curriculum. For this, the major changes in the 2015 revised mathematics curriculum were examined. Major changes in the 2015 revised mathematics curriculum are as follows: 1) Introduce and emphasize mathematical competencies, 2) Restructure the content system, 3) Reduce mathematics contents to teach, 4) Emphasize the learner's affective domain, 5) Emphasize the use of technology, 6) Improve teaching and learning methods and evaluation methods. Also, a survey was conducted for elementary school teachers to analyze the perceptions and demands of the 2015 Revised Mathematics Curriculum. The contents of the survey are consisted of contents of the teachers' awareness of the main changes of the 2015 Revised Curriculum and their demands to implement the 2015 Revised Curriculum in schools. Finally, conclusions and suggestions were drawn based on the survey results. The conclusions and suggestions are as follows: 1) there is a lack of teachers' awareness of the 2015 Revised Curriculum, 2) Support for mathematics curriculum competencies is needed, 3) A variety of teaching and learning materials are needed for emphasizing the learner's affective domain, using the technology, and improving teaching and learning methods and evaluation methods.

  • This study aims to find ways for securing continuity of elementary mathematics curriculum and kindergarten curriculum. To do this, we considered the status of 'mathematical exploration' in Nuri curriculum and analysed the correspondence of content-domains and the continuity between Nuri curriculum for ages three to five and 2009 revised national elementary mathematics curriculum, based on the reconstructed achievement criteria. The result of these analyses reveals that the classification of five content-domains both for 'mathematical exploration' of Nuri curriculum and for 2009 revised national elementary mathematics curriculum coincides. We also recognized the reconstructed achievement criteria which are considered as reverse continuity or as discontinuity of Nuri curriculum and 2009 revised national elementary mathematics curriculum in all the five content domains. The former means being lower in levels or reduction in ranges from Nuri curriculum to elementary one. The latter means that some reconstructed achievement criteria are included in only one of the two curriculum. Based on these results, we suggested several ways to secure the continuity between Nuri curriculum and 2009 revised national elementary mathematics curriculum in the perspective of mathematics education.

  • In this study I compared Korea's elementary school mathematics curriculum and its handbook with Japan's curriculum and its handbook. Based on that work, I induced some suggestions which is useful to develop mathematics curriculum in the future. First, the purposes of Korea's elementary school mathematics curriculum focused on the system of mathematics, scholastic ability and learning volition. On the other hand, Japan's curriculum concentrated on the utility of mathematics in daily life and the motive of learning mathematics. Secondly, purposes of mathematics education written in Japan's curriculum handbook, differing from Korea's, are closely divided into concrete items. Finally, purposes of mathematics education in each grade, written in Japan's curriculum handbook, are presented in outlined form according to general purpose of mathematics curriculum. The merit of this way is that the researcher could display flexibilities and creativities in making mathematics textbook.

  • In this paper, we explore about Korean early childhood mathematics education history. Actually, mathematics education history is mathematics education curriculum's history. Korean education curriculum has been influenced by the US and European prominent educators: Montessori, Piaget, Bruno, and Dewey, etc. We investigate how those philosophy and thoughts were adopted in Korean early childhood mathematics education curriculums from 1st to 2015 amended curriculum. Also, we can see that NCTM's content standards and Korean Nuri curriculum are the same in the basic concepts: number and operations, space and shapes, measurement, understanding of patterns and data collection.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate various mathematics education improvement or reform movements of Western Europe countries (United Kingdom, Germany, etc.) and the United States of America, to see the effects of those movements on Korean mathematics education circle, and to find a direction of Korean mathematics curriculum design. The third Korean mathematics curriculum was most affected by the new mathematics movement of the United States of America. This movement was emphasizing abstract structure, logical rigorousness and discovery learning of mathematics, which was fired from late fifties. Korean mathematics education circle imported the new mathematics early seventies from USA, but serious problems had been found at that time in USA. This study has pointed out that new math oriented Korean mathematics curriculum was not proper and the new mathematics itself was disastrous for most Korean students' learning. The study also points out that they hurried too much introducing the new mathematics and publishing new mathematics oriented textbooks but they had not sufficient teacher training programs. In our future mathematics curriculum reform, we have to remember such a historical lesson.
