  • Self oscillating current fed push pull resonant inverters can be controlled without using special drivers. Dc current flows through the choke coil and the power switches, although the driving signals of the power switches are sinusoidal. When the base current is near zero, the transistors cannot be operated in switching mode. Hence higher switching power losses and instantaneous peak power during off transitions are observed. In this study, an alternative design has been proposed to overcome this problem. A prototype circuit has been built which provides dc bias current to the base of the transistors. Experimental results are compared with theoretical calculations to demonstrate the validity of the design. The proposed design decreases the peak and average power losses by about 8 times, when compared to conventional designs.

  • A high performance and low cost single switch current fed energy recovery circuit (ERC) for an alternating current (AC) plasma display panel (PDP) is proposed. Since it is composed of only one power switch compared with the conventional circuit consisting of four power switches and two large energy recovery capacitors, the ERC features a simpler structure and lower cost. Furthermore, since all power switches can be switched under soft switching operating conditions, the proposed circuit has desirable merits such as increased reliability and low switching loss. Specifically, there are no serious voltage notches across the PDP with the aid of gas discharge current compensation, which can greatly reduce the current stress of all inverter switches, and provide those switches with the turn on timing margin. To confirm the validity of proposed circuit, its operation and performance were verified on a prototype for 7-inch test PDP.

  • Voltage varing Fate dv/dt which is applied to induction motor usually makes unnegligible leakage current and it flows through stator winding and motor frame. This kind of harmonic leakage current makes effect on power source and cuases electromagnetic trouble because the motor frame has earth. Therefore in this study, a high frequency induction motor model is developed and analyze the motor performance to explain the phenomena. Inverter model is also developed and is combined with the motel model to prepare the basis of the high frequency effects on inverter fed induction motor.

  • A simple on-line elimination strategy of the dead time and inverter nonlinearity using the current slope information is presented for a PWM inverter-fed IPMSM (Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) drive. In a PWM inverter-fed IPMSM drive, a dead time is inserted to prevent a breakdown of switching device. This distorts the inverter output voltage, resulting in a current distortion and torque ripple. In addition to the dead time, inverter nonlinearity exists in switching devices of the PWM inverter, which is generally dependent on operating conditions such as the temperature, DC link voltage, and current. The proposed scheme is based on the fact that the d-axis current ripple is mainly caused by the dead time and inverter nonlinearity. To eliminate such an influence, the current slope information is determined. The obtained current slope information is processed by the PI controller to estimate the disturbance caused by the dead time and inverter nonlinearity. The overall system is implemented using DSP TMS320F28335 and the validity of the proposed algorithm is verified through the simulation and experiments. Without requiring any additional hardware, the proposed scheme can effectively eliminate the dead time and inverter nonlinearity even in the presence of the parameter uncertainty.

  • This paper proposes a novel three-phase current-fed active clamp DC-DC converter for fuel cells. A single common active clamp branch is used to limit transient voltage across the three-phase full bridge and to realize zero-voltage switching(ZVS) in all switches. To apply for the power generation system current-fed type has been combined with the three-phase power conversion system. The proposed approach has the following advantages: an increase (by a factor of three) of input current and output voltage chopping frequencies; lower RMS current through the inverter switches with higher power transfer capability; reduction in size of reactive later components and the power conditioning system; better transformer utilization; increase of the system reliability. Therefore, the proposed three-phase current-fed active clamp DC-DC converter is appropriate for the boost type DC-DC converter for fuel cells and also applicable for the photovoltaic and battery charge system. The paper details the analysis, simulation and hardware implementation of the proposed system. Finally, experimental results with the proposed PWM strategy demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed scheme on a 500W prototype converter.

  • In this paper, an induction motor rotor fault diagnosis system using current signals, which are measured using the axis-transformation method is presented. Inverter-fed motor drives, unlike line-driven motor drives, have stator currents which are rich in harmonics and therefore fault diagnosis using stator current is not trivial. The current signals for rotor fault diagnosis need precise and high resolution information, which means the diagnosis system demands additional hardware such as a low pass filter, high resolution ADC, an encoder and additional hardware. Therefore, the proposed axis-transformation method is expected to contribute to a low cost fault diagnosis system in inverter-fed motor drives without the need for any additional hardware. In order to confirm the validity of the developed algorithms, various experiments for rotor faults are tested and the line current spectrum of each faulty situation, using the Park transformation, is compared with the results obtained from the FFT(Fast Fourier Transform).

  • In this paper, the induction motor rotor fault diagnosis system using current signals, which are measured using axis-transformation method, and speed, which is estimated using current information, are presented. In inverter-fed motor drives unlike line-driven motor drives the stator currents have numerous harmonics components and therefore fault diagnosis using stator currents is very difficult. The current and speed signal for rotor fault diagnosis needs to be precise. Also, high resolution information, which means the diagnosis system, demands additional hardware such as low pass filter, high resolution ADC, encoder and etc. Therefore, the proposed axis-transformation and speed estimation method are expected to contribute to low cost fault diagnosis systems in inverter-fed motor drives without the need for an encoder and any additional hardware. • An inverter driven induction motor has more superior dynamic characteristic than sine wave driven induction motor. But it has a problem with shaft voltage and bearing current in drive-motor system. This paper presents the analysis of bearing current in inverter-fed induction motor. The proposed method is based on using numerical method (FEM) to derive parasitic parameters in motor. Using the electric field analysis with FEM, the stored energy in dielectric materials of the motor can be calculated and the parasitic capacitances are obtained. Then we compared the proposed method with a conventional method in variable frequency and load conditions. From the comparision of simulation and experiment result, we confirmed that the proposed method is valid.
