  • The phase field model is becoming the model of choice for the theoretical study of the morphologies of crystals growth from the melt. This model provides an alternative approach to the solution of the classical (sharp interface) model of solidification by introducing a new variable, the phase field, Ø, to identify the phase. The variable Ø takes on constant values in the bulk phases and makes a continuous transition between these values over a thin transition layer that plays the role of the classically sharp interface. This results in Ø being governed by a new partial differential equation(in addition to the PDE's that govern the classical fields, such as temperature and composition) that guarantees (in the asymptotic limit of a suitably thin transition layer) that the appropriate boundary conditions at the crystal-melt interface are satisfied. Thus, one can proceed to solve coupled PDE's without the necessity of explicitly tracking the interface (free boundary) that would be necessary to solve the classical (sharp interface) model. Recent advances in supercomputing and algorithms now enable generation of interesting and valuable results that display most of the fundamental solidification phenomena and processes that are observed experimentally. These include morphological instability, solute trapping, cellular growth, dendritic growth (with anisotropic sidebranching, tip splitting, and coupling to periodic forcing), coarsening, recalescence, eutectic growth, faceting, and texture development. This talk will focus on the fundamental basis of the phase field model in terms of irreversible thermodynamics as well as it computational limitations and prognosis for future improvement. • Variations of dielectric and piezoelectric properties and associated phase transformation of <001> -oriented rhombohedral 0.92Pb (Zn$\sub$1/3/Nb$\sub$2/3/)O$_3$-0.08PbTiO$_3$ single crystals were investigated. The longitudinal strain level was found to abruptly increase at 15 kV/cm, corresponding to that where an induced phase appears within a multidomain matrix. Drastic decreases in the dielectric constant, transverse coupling, and transverse piezoelectric coefficient associated with the E-field induced phase were the result of increased crystal anisotropy in PZN-PT crystals. By contrast, the thickness coupling increased from 53 % at 0 kV/cm to 64 % at 45 kV/cm, also associated with this phase transition under the E-field. The measured dielectric and piezflelectric properties found for the induced phase state were nearly identical to those of <001> poled tetragonal (1-x)PZN-xPT (x>0.1) crystals. Based on these results, it is evident that the symmetry of induced phase is tetragonal.

  • Electric field-induced phase transition from the tetragonal to rhombohedral phase was investigated for the <111> direction in tetragonal PZN-PT single crystals, which have spontaneous polarization along the <001> direction. From the strain and dielectric data, it was confirmed that the samples followed a tetragonal-orthorhombic-rhombohedral phase transition sequence with application of an electric field. This transition is different from the rhombohedral-tetragonal phase transition of <001> rhombohedral composition single crystals, in which a phase transition occurred without showing the intermediate orthorhombic phase.

  • The magneto-resistivity and electric field-current density (E-J) curves were investigated up to a magnetic field 9 T in the optimally doped $BaFe_{1.8}Co_{0.2}As_2$ single crystal with a superconducting temperature ($T_c$) of 24.6 K. The E-J Scaling behaviors below and above vortex glass transition temperature ($T_g$) were found, confirming the existence of the vortex glass phase transition. The critical exponents for the diverging spatial and time correlations at $T_g$, were obtained as v = $1.1{\pm}0.1$ and z = $4.5{\pm}0.3$, respectively. The obtained critical exponents are in good agreement with the predicted values of v ~ 1 - 2 and z > 4 within the 3D vortex glass theory.

  • We reported pushing of colloidal particles by a moving isotropic-nematic phase boundary. Here, we report tailoring the structure of 3-dimensional networks formed by these particles by adjusting the rate of phase transition and by application of an electric field. The resulting networks affect the electro-optic performance of liquid crystal devices.

  • In this work we report methods of formation of three-dimensional structures of particles in a liquid crystal host. We found that, under the appropriate conditions, the particles are captured and dragged by the moving isotropic/nematic front during the phase transition process. This movement of the particles can be enhanced significantly or suppressed drastically with the influence of an electric field and/or with changing the conditions of the phase transition, such as the rate of cooling. As a result, a wide variety of particle structures can be obtained ranging from a fine-grained cellular structure to stripes of varying periods to a course-grained "root" structures. Changing the properties of the materials, such as the size and density of the particles and the surface anchoring of the liquid crystal at the particle surface, can also be used to control the morphology of the three-dimensional particle network and adjust the physical properties of the resulting dispersions. These particle structures may be used to affect the performance of LCD's much as polymers have been used in the past.

  • We report a measurement of the effective refractive index of a nematic liquid crystal (NLC) inside a Fabry-Perot (FP) etalon according to the applied electric fields. The effective refractive index of the NLC depends on the intensity of the applied electric field. A wavelength-swept laser with a polygon-scanner-based wavelength filter is used as a wide-band optical source to measure the effective refractive index of the NLC. The bandwidth of the optical source is greater than 90 nm around 1300 nm. The fabricated NLC FP etalon consists of glass substrates, gold layers as the electrodes with highly reflective surfaces, polyimide layers as the planar alignment layers, and an LC layer. Furthermore, we measured the Freedericksz transition voltages for three types of NLC FP etalons having thicknesses of $30.6{\mu}m$, $55.4{\mu}m$, and $108.8{\mu}m$. The Freedericksz transition voltages in the three cases are nearly equal. The measured effective refractive indices in the three cases decreased from 1.67 to 1.51 as the applied electric field intensity was increased. Beyond the threshold electric field, the effective refractive indices quickly decreased and eventually saturated at a value of 1.51 for all cases.

  • In this paper, with a bistable curve of the bistable chiral splay nematic liquid crystal (BCSN LC) device, we clarify how the twist-to-splay transition is achieved under a horizontal field. By a sufficiently high horizontal electric field, the bistable property becomes monostable. The transition can be achieved.

  • We have studied the phase transition to look for molecular structure by using several different techniques for new banana-shaped liquid crystals shown in Fig. 1. Based on the similarities to recently observed fluro-contaning materials (switching involves layer structure rearrangement, increasing threshold with increasing temperature) for HC sample (where x is H), we assume that the phase C has a triclinic symmetry corresponding to the double tilted $smC_G$ Phase. The observation that the polarization peak appears at lower field ($E_o{\sim}15V/{\mu}m$) than the amplitude of the threshold ($E_{th}$) can be explained assuming a field induced $SmC_G$ - SmCP (or SmAP) transition at $E_{th}$
