  • In conventional method of supporting soil shuttering wall during excavation a system of struts and wales to provide cross-lot bracing is common in trench excavations and other excavations of limited width. This method, however, becomes difficult and costly to be adopted for large excavations since heavily braced structural systems are required. Another expensive and unsafe situations are expected when temporary struts must be removed for the construction of underground structures. This paper introduces innovative strut systems which can be used as permanent underground structures after its role as brace system to resist earth pressure during excavation phase. Underground structural system suggested from architect is checked against the soil lated pressures before the analysis of stresses developed from gravity loads. In this technology, named SPS(Struts as Permanent System), retaining wall is installed first and excavation proceeds until the first level of bracing is reached. Braces used as struts during excavation will serve as permanent girders when buildings are in operation. Simultaneous construction of underground and superstructure can proceeds when excavation ends with the last level of braces being installed. In this paper, construction sequence and the calculation concept are explained in detail with some photo illustrations. SPS technology was applied to three selected buildings. One of them was completed and two others are being constructed Many sensors were installed to monitor the behavior of retaining wall, braces as column in terms of stress change and displacement. Adjacent ground movement was also obtained. These projects demonstrate that SPS technology contributes to the speed as well as the economy involved in construction.

  • Aerodynamic analysis(DATCOM) and radar cross section(RCS) analysis(POFACETS) were integrated for the air-to-surface missile concept design using a design framework. The missile geometry was defined based on the CAD(CATIA) for synchronizing the manufacturing with design processes. Aero/RCS analyses were linked with the CAD process under the ModelCenter framework in order to receive the geometry data automatically. The missile design baseline configuration was selected from ROC(requirement of capability). Then the RCS minimization was performed subject to thelargerthebetter constraint of the missile lift-to-drag ratio. This study demonstrated that various design strategies can be performed efficiently about many missile configurations using this design framework in the missile conceptual design phase.

  • Purpose: Mobius syndrome is a rare congenital disorder characterized by facial diplegia and bilateral abducens palsy, which occasionally combines with other cranial nerve dysfunction. The inability to show happiness, sadness or anger by facial expression frequently results in social dysfunction. The classic concept of cross facial nerve grafting and free muscle transplantation, which is standard in unilateral developmental facial palsy, cannot be used in these patients without special consideration. Our experience in the treatment of three patients with this syndrome using transfer of muscles innervated by trigeminal nerve showed rewarding results. Methods: We used bilateral temporalis muscle elevated from the bony temporal fossa. Muscles and their attached fascia were folded down over the anterior surface of the zygomatic arch. The divided strips from the attached fascia were passed subcutaneously and anchored to the medial canthus and the nasolabial crease for smiling and competence of mouth and eyelids. For the recent 13 years the authors applied this method in 3 Mobius syndrome cases- 45 year-old man and 13 year-old boy, 8 year-old girl. Results: One month after the surgery the patients had good support and already showed voluntary movement at the corner of their mouth. They showed full closure of both eyelids. There was no scleral showing during eyelid closure. Also full closure of the mouth was achieved. After six months, the reconstructed movements of face were maintained. Conclusion: Temporalis muscle transfer for Mobius syndrome is an excellent method for bilateral reconstruction at one stage, is easy to perform, and has a wide range of reconstruction and reproducibility.

  • According to "A guide Book to Highway Design", most road elements are chosen based on a certain design speed in order to ensure obtaining safe and smooth traffic operating. However, road safety in practical way is corelative to not only all element of roads but also road shape, for example, between straight line and curves line and between curved lines. Also, it is relates to alignments such as horizontal alignment, vertical alignment, and cross section. That is, the practical road design should be examined in both sides of 3 dimension and consecutiveness as the practical road is a 3-dimensional successive object. The paper presents a concept for acceleration to evaluate consistency of road considering actual road shape on 3-dimension. Acceleration of vehicle is influential to road consistency based on running state of vehicle and state of drivers. Especially, the magnitude of acceleration is a quite influential element to drivers. Based on above, the acceleration on each point 3-D road can be calculated and then displacement can be done. Computation of acceleration means total calculation on each axis.

  • Practically, the composite roughness coefficient, which is the equivalent roughness coefficient of a cross-section where the wall roughness is not constant along the wetted perimeter, is used to describe the flow conditions in open channels. In this study, it was conducted that the previous formulae was classified according to a weighting factor of the local resistance. The new subsection division method was also developed based on the force-balance concept in each subsection. The accuracy of the proposed method was examined and the applicability and limitation of the 13 existing formulae were analyzed by comparing the calculated with the experimental measured data from Djajadi (2009) and Knight and Macdonald (1979). It was found that Horton's method might underestimate the total conveyance of a composite channel and Lotter's method showed a good agreement between calculated and measured data. However, the proper division method, such as the proposed method based on the Z-method, is required for the application of Lotter's method.

  • The aim of this study is to look into the didactical background for teaching proportional reasoning in elementary school mathematics and offer suggestions to improve teaching proportional reasoning in the future. In order to attain these purposes, this study extracted and examined key ideas with respect to the didactical background on teaching proportional reasoning through a theoretical consideration regarding various studies on proportional reasoning. Based on such examination, this study compared and analyzed textbooks used in the United States, the United Kingdom, and South Korea. In the light of such theoretical consideration and analytical results, this study provided suggestions for improving teaching proportional reasoning in elementary schools in Korea as follows: giving much weight on proportional reasoning, emphasizing multiplicative comparison and discerning between additive comparison and multiplicative comparison, underlining the ratio concept as an equivalent relation, balancing between comparisons tasks and missing value tasks inclusive of quantitative and qualitative, algebraic and geometrical aspects, emphasizing informal strategies of students before teaching cross-product method, and utilizing informal and pre-formal models actively.

  • As the radius of curvature of curved optical waveguide gets smaller, the loss increases at the junction of linear-curved waveguide by the cross sectional mode mismatch. The concept of lateral offset has been used widely to minimize it, and simple method of maximum matching has been efficient for most cases of silica waveguide with low optical confinement and large radius of curvature. Here, we analyzed that the propagation mode characteristics of the lateral offset and propagation mode characteristics of general case with effective index method and Airy function solution. As the normalized frequency varies, mode characteristics changes near the boundary of 1/V=0.7 and the simple matching of gaussian profile might give -35% of error at most. We proposed improved method with a new correction factor to improve the mode mismatch problem of conventional methods for general cases, and showed the convenience and feasibility of this method for the calculation of the lateral offset.

  • An all-optical 4-bit Gray code to binary coded decimal (BCD) converter by means of commercially available numerical analysis tool (VPI) was demonstrated, for the first time to our knowledge. Circuit design approach was modified appropriately in order to fit the electrical method on an all-optical logic circuit based on a cross gain modulation (XGM) process so that signal degradation due to the non-ideal optical logic gates can be minimized. Without regenerations, Q-factor of around 4 was obtained for the most severely degraded output bit (least significant bit-LSB) with 2.5 Gbps clean input signals having 20 dB extinction ratio. While modifying the two-level simplification method and Karnaugh map method to design a Gray code to BCD converter, a general design concept was also founded (one-level simplification) in this research, not only for the Gray code to BCD converter but also for any general applications.

  • The operating parameters influencing on limiting flux was investigated in the ultrafiltration of PVA, and a new model, which is based on the Amiar model using the concept of heat transfer coefficient, was devised to overcome the limitation of gel-layer model. Using polysulfone plate-unit membrane (MWCO=20,000) and hollow-fiber membrane (MWCO= 30,000), ultrafiltration characteristics of PVA was examined with the variation of operating parameters such as cross flow velocity, transmembrane pressure, temperature, and PVA concentration. According to experimental results, the ultrafiltration of PVA through polysulfone membrane is mainly controlled by well-known phenomena of concentration polarization caused by gel-layer formation. On the contrary, in hollow fiber membrane was observed upward limiting flux which can not be explained by gel-layer model. New model was applied to predict the upward limiting flux behavior with partial satisfaction. The application of new model including viscosity correction factor, however, revealed that PVA ultrafiltration is closely related to the viscosity of permeating fluid.
