  • A new poinsettia cultivar 'Noel' was bred by the National Institute of Horticultural and Herbal Science(NIHHS) in 2007. In 2004, a cross was made between 'Gutbier V-10 Amy', a variety with high free-branching habit and light red bracts, and 'Ichiban', a variety with deeply lobed transitional leaves and bright red bracts. 'Noel' was finally selected in 2007 after the investigation of observations on the growth and flower characteristics from 2005 to 2007. 'Noel' has smoothly waving red elliptic bracts. Leafblades are dark green and ovate. The variety has relatively long petioles, and stem color is greenish. 'Noel' has high free-branching ability and plant height is medium. Noel's bracts and transitional leaves are fully colored in 7.5 weeks after short day treatment.

  • A new gerbera cultivar 'Noble Pink' was released by the National Institute of Horticultural & Herbal Science (NIHHS) in 2009. A cross was made between 'Himalaya' with white and semi-double and 'Vital' with pastel cream and single in 2006. After investigation of the characteristics for four years (from 2006 to 2009), it was selected specially for the use of cut flower. 'Noble Pink' is a vigorous cultivar with pastel pink flower color (RHS R48B), brilliant green disc floret and semi-double. The average flower diameter is 11.8 cm, large flower. And inner ray floret and disc diameter are 4.77 cm and 2.17 cm, respectively. It produces a large yield with continuous supply of cut flowers and has adequate peduncle height. We believe that 'Noble Pink' has a great potential for expanding cultivated area of domestic gerbera cultivars and increasing farmers-income.

  • A new rose cultivar, 'Pure Heart' was selected from the progenies of a cross between 'Saphir' and 'Crystal Line' at the Gyeonggi-Do Agricultural Research and Extension Services in 1998. It was finally selected in 2002 after evaluation trials for three years (2000-2002). 'Pure Heart' was developed for a standard-type cut flower. 'Pure Heart' has some good agricultural and marketing traits. 'Pure Heart' has good qualified flower of which color is fair bright pink, 6.8cm in flower diameter and 4.5cm in flower height. 'Pure Heart' produce $122stems/m^2$ in a year, and has 45 petals per flower. The length of cut flower was long with 66.0cm. Vase life of the cultivar could be as long as 8 days. Futhermore marketing-quality was good in some aspects. The cultivar was applied for a variety protection in 2004 and was released to commercial growers in 2005.

  • A new cultivars Dendranthema grandiflourm 'Dream Moon' was developed at Gyeonggi-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services (GARES), Korea in 2008. The cultivar 'Dream Moon' was derived from a cross between 'Patra', a spray cultivar with yellow single type, and 'Sei-rosa', a spray cultivar with pink single type in 2005. The cultivar has single type flowers with pink petals. Trial evaluation was conducted from 2006 to 2008 for a shading cultivation in summer and a retarding cultivation in spring. The flowering time of 'Dream Moon' is late October, and year-round flowering is possible by shade or light treatment. The diameter of flower is 56.0 mm. Numbers of flowers per stem and petals per flower are 16.4 and 24.6, respectively. After investing of specific characters from 2006 to 2008, it was finally selected and named 'Dream Moon'. It has resistance to white rust and the vase life is about 20.7days in autumn season.

  • The objective of this study was to rapidly evaluate fatty acids in a collection of foxtail millet (Setaria italica (L.) P. Beauv) of different origins so that this information could be disseminated to breeders to advance germplasm use and breeding. To develop the calibration equations for rapid and nondestructive evaluation of fatty acid content, near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRs) spectra (1104-2494 nm) of samples ground into flour (n=100) were obtained using a dispersive spectrometer. A modified partial least-squares model was developed to predict each component. For foxtail millet germplasm, our models returned coefficients of determination ($R^2$) of 0.91, 0.89, 0.98 and 0.98 for strearic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid, and total fatty acids, respectively. The prediction of the external validation set (n=10) showed significant correlation between references values and NIRs values ($r^2=0.97$, 0.91, 0.99 for oleic, linoleic, and total fatty acids, respectively). Standard deviation/standard error of cross-validation (SD/SECV) values were greater than 3 (3.11, 5.45, and 7.50 for oleic, linoleic, and total fatty acids, respectively). These results indicate that these NIRs equations are functional for the mass screening and rapid quantification of the oleic, linolenic, and total fatty acids characterizing foxtail millet germplasm. Among the samples, IT153491 showed an especially high content of fatty acids ($84.06mg\;g^{-1}$), whereas IT188096 had a very low content ($29.92mg\;g^{-1}$).
