1. The purpose of this study is to provide a series of statistical "bench marks" from which one can begin to think systematically about the required development of the Korean food and fertilizer needs over the next quarter-century. 2. The Korean population has been estimated by the characteristics of the population and its social and political situations today. Because fertility and mortality rates are relatively stable and are under control of politics concerned, the estimation rates were established with 1.6% over 1975-1980, 1.3% over 1981-1990, and 1.0% over 1991-2000. 3. Annual per capita absorption of milled rice has fluctuated rather closely around 140kg, since 1968, with no evidence of declining trend. Per capita absorption of barley and wheat around 120 kg, and legumes around 10.6kg, However because the case of wheat and corn productions are rather difficult the self-sufficiency in the future, the rice is considered to be accelerate its yield growth surplus the level of self-sufficiency to export. 4. The fertilizer demand in each element has been calculated by mechanical multiplication of "the recommend index of fetilizer application" to yield a unit production over the need of national food supply by crop year. 5. As a results refer to Table (8), the estimated quantities of total fertilizer demand to meet the national food supply of the years of 1974, 1980, 1985, 1.990, 1995, and 2000 are reached around 871500, 1138150, 1375480, 1515030, 1652090 and 1799850 metric tons in each year.

This research was performed in order to improve the goodness of fit of paddy rice production forecasting using MODIS images and to find out appropriate explanatory variables in the forecasting model. The aim of this paper is to review the use of satellite images for the survey of paddy rice production in Korea. Many developed countries, including the United States, Australia, and Japan, have been using satellite images to produce agricultural statistics such as crop production, cultivated acreage, etc. The survey accuracy of crop production by using satellite images, however, is not satisfied in practical use. In this paper, we reviewed several methods to increase the survey accuracy of rice production statistics, gained from satellite images. Rice was selected for this study because its cultivated area and production amount could be more easily identified than other crops by using satellite images. The MODIS images were used because they involved more appropriate images to estimate and analyze rice production. This study estimated yield functions by using the NDVIs, gained from paddy rice yields and annual average isothermal lines, and the meteorological variables such as sunshine hours, rainfall, and temperature during ripening stage. As a result of yield function estimation, the goodness of fit(R-squared) for the models was shown from 0.768 to 0.891. In this study, it is noteworthy academically and practically that vegetation index(NDVIs) identified by annual average isothermal lines and meteorological variables are very useful for estimating yield functions.

A crop information system can provide information regarding crop distribution, crop growth conditions, crop yield in various forms such as monitoring, forecasting, estimation or analysis. This paper presents the design and construction of a crop information system based on data collected in Korea, USA, and China. Therein, climate data including temperature, precipitation, solar radiation are used to evaluate the impact on crop growth, NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) data is used in crop monitoring, and crop map data is utilized for the management of crop distribution. The system has achieved three prominent results: 1) Providing information with high frequency, 2) Automatically creating the report through the analysis of the data, 3) The users to easily approach the system and retrieve the information.
Onions are a significant crop in Korea, and cultivation is increasing every year along with high demand. Onions are planted in the fall and mainly harvested in June, the rainy season, therefore, physiological changes in onion bulbs during long-term storage might have happened. Onions are stored in cold room and at adequate relative humidity to avoid quality loss. In this study, bio-yield stress and weight loss were measured as the quality parameters of net packaged onions during 10 weeks of storage, and the storage environmental conditions are monitored using sensor networks systems. Quality estimation of net packaged onion during storage was performed using the storage environmental condition data through machine learning approaches. Among the suggested estimation models, support vector regression method showed the best accuracy for the quality estimation of net packaged onions.
Bacterial pustule of soybean (Glycine max) caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. glycines is one of the most prevalent bacterial diseases of soybean in Korea, where it causes considerable yield loss. This study was carried out to develop yield prediction model for bacterial pustule by analyzing correlation between the percentage of diseased leaf area and yield. The severe disease incidence of soybean bacterial pustule caused yield losses by 19.8% in 2006 and 16.8% in 2007, respectively. Severity of bacterial pustule greatly affected on 100 seed weight and yield, but did not on stem length, number of branches per plant, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per plant. On the other hand, correlation coefficients between diseased leaf area and yield were $-0.93^*$('06) and $-0.77^*$('07), respectively. The regression equation obtained by analyzing correlation between the percentage of diseased leaf area and yield loss in 2006 and in 2007 was y = -3.2914x + 348.19($R^2$ = 0.8603) and y = -2.9671x + 302.08($R^2$ = 0.9411), respectively. These results will be helpful in estimating losses on a field-scale and thereby predicting the production of soybean.
To get some informations for sustainable paddy use, the productivities of soils with two years of cropping systems were estimated through pot experiment using two pretreated groups of not autoclaved 'natural'- and 'autoclaved'-soils without any fertilization. And then the relationship between the productivities, called yield potentials, and the characteristics of soils as affected by cropping systems, such as rice-rice (R-R), ricebarley-rice-barley (R-B-R-B), rice-barley-rice-wheat (R-B-R-W), soybean-barley-soybean-barley (S-B-S-B), of which barley and wheat were composted at a level of $10MT\;ha^{-1}$, and S-B-S-B without compost, was analyzed. These treatments were established in mid-mountainous loam paddy, which contained exchangeable Ca of $11.8cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$, located at the altitude of 285 m above sea level in Sangju of Korea. Crops for the estimation of soil productivity were rice cv. 'Seolemi' and soybean cv. 'Chamol'. As a result, under the natural soils condition, rice grain and straw were highly produced in composted S-B-S-B soils (p < 0.05) and lowly in R-R soils (p < 0.05). While soybean grain and stem were higher in R-R soils (p < 0.05) than other soils which not significantly different each other. In case of autoclaved soils, the yield potentials of rice and soybean were high together in either composted R-B-R-B/W or S-B-S-B soils compared to R-R and uncomposted S-B-S-B soils (p < 0.05). In especial, these yield potentials under the natural soils condition were commonly influenced by soil porosity showing negative correlation for rice (p < 0.01); positive for soybean (p < 0.05). And the porosity possibly reversed even the symbiotic contribution of indigenous Bradyrhizobium japonicum for soybean. Under autoclaved soils condition the potentials of rice and soybean showed negative correlations with soil C:N ratio (p < 0.05) similarly to the case of rice in the natural soils.

Crop models depend on a large number of input parameters including the cultivar parameters that represent the genetic characteristics of a given cultivar. The cultivar parameters have been estimated using high quality data for crop growth, which require considerable costs and efforts. The objective of this study was to examine the feasibility of using low quality data for the parameter estimation. In the present study, the cultivar parameters for cv. Shindongjin were estimated using the data obtained from the report of new cultivars development and research from 2005 to 2016. The root mean square errors (RMSE) of the heading dates were less than 3 days when the parameters associated with phenology were estimated. In contrast, the coefficient of determination for yield tended to be less than 0.1. The large errors incurred by the fact that no growth data collected over a season was used for parameter estimation. This suggests that detailed observation data needs to be prepared for parameter calibration, which would be aided by remote sensing approaches. The occurrence of natural disasters during a growing season has to be considered because crop models cannot take into account the effects of those events. Still, our results provide a reasonable range for the parameters, which could be used to set the boundary of a given parameter for cultivars similar to cv. Shindongjin in further studies.
Ground-based remote sensing can be used as one of the non-destructive, fast, and real-time diagnostic tools for predicting yield, biomass, and nitrogen stress during growing season. The objectives of this study were: 1) to assess biomass and nitrogen (N) status of tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) plants under N stress using ground-based remote sensors; and 2) to evaluate the feasibility of spectral reflectance indices for estimating an application rate of N and predicting yield of tobacco. Dry weight (DW), N content, and N uptake at the 40th and 50th day after transplanting (DAT) were positively correlated with chlorophyll content and normalized difference vegetation indexes (NDVIs) from all sensors (P<0.01). Especially, Green NDVI (GNDVI) by spectroradiometer and Crop Circle-passive sensors were highly correlated with DW, N content and N uptake. The yield of tobacco was positively correlated with canopy reflectance indices measured at each growth stage (P<0.01). The regression of GNDVI by spectroradiometer on yield showed positively quadratic curve and explained about 90% for the variability of measured yield. The sufficiency index (SI) calculated from data/maximum value of GNDVI at the $40^{th}$ DAT ranged from 0.72 to 1.0 and showed the same positively quadratic regression with N application rate explaining 84% for the variability of N rate. These results suggest that use of reflectance indices measured with ground-based remote sensors may assist in determining application rate of fertilizer N at the critical season and estimating yield in mid-season.
Crop monitoring can provide useful information for farmers to establish farm management strategies suitable for optimum production of vegetables. But, traditional monitoring has used field measurements involving destructive sampling and laboratory analysis, which is costly and time consuming. Unmanned Aerial vehicle (UAV) could be effectively applied in a field of crop monitoring for estimation of cultivated area, growth parameters, growth disorder and yield, because it can acquire high-resolution images quickly and repeatedly. And lower flight altitude compared with satellite, UAV can obtain high quality images even in cloudy weather. This study examined the possibility of utilizing UAV in the field of crop monitoring and was to suggest the application method for production of crop status information from UAV.
