  • In this study, two mathematical models are first constructed to analyze vibration characteristics of a gear train - spindle system of an NC lathe gear box. One is a lumped parameter model which is used for calculating natural frequencies of the torsional vibration, the other is a finite element model for analyzing lateral vibration and critical speeds of the spindle system. In addition, this study examines some possible resonance conditions such as gear mesh frequencies, 1X shaft rpm frequencies over whole operating speed range, and so on. The results may be helpful to design a machine tool gear box with low noise and vibration.

  • Using the genetic algorithm, the optimal-design technique of the Nielsen arch bridge was proposed in this paper. The design parameters were the arch-rise ratio and the steel weight ratio of the Nielsen arch bridge, and optimal-design techniques were utilized to analyze the behavior of the bridge. The optimal parameter values were determined for the estimated optimal level. The parameter determination requires the standardization of the safety, utility, and economic concepts as the critical factors of a structure. For this, a genetic algorithm was used, whose global-optimal-solution search ability is superior to the optimization technique, and whose object function in the optimal design is the total weight of the structure. The constraints for the optimization were displacement, internal stress, and time and space. The structural analysis was a combination of the small displacement theory and the genetic algorithm, and the runtime was reduced for parallel processing. The optimal-design technique that was developed in this study was employed and deduced using the optimal arch-rise ratio, steel weight ratio, and optimal-design domain. The optimal-design technique was presented so it could be applied in the industry.

  • Hit judgement is essential factor in design for battle-style MMORPG game system and sets foundation for other game systems. Hit judgement model consists of attack power and attack rate. The former contains minimum, maximum, and critical attack, the latter has miss, hit, and critical blow rate. Random function generates one value of attack rate and consequently the damage is calculated. In this article, we propose hit judgement model which Is widely acceptable for generic MMORPG and describe the effort of applying the proposed model to Travia Online in detail.

  • Plastic bonded explosive(PBX) is mainly composed of the nitramine-ploymer compositions. PBX is characterized by high velocity and pressure of detonation, low vulnerability and good thermal stability. Many important applications of PBX require the good adhesion between nitramine crystals and the binder. For PBXs as well as propellants, where good mechanical properties are of great importance, dewetting therefore must be prevented by strong adhesion between filler-binder. Adhesion depends on surface characteristics of filler and binder. In order to design for better adhesion, an understanding of the surface properties of explosive and binder is required. The surface free energies are calculated from contact angle values by the method of Kaelble. Critical surface tension of solids are calculated by Zisman plot. Critical surface tension is a useful parameter for characterizing the wettability of solid surface. In this study, HMX and 3 kinds of copolymers are selected, since they are widely used in many plastic bonded explosives. The technical objective of this investigation is to predict the interaction between filler and binder from their surface free energies.

  • The perturbation approach is applied to solve the nonlinear Schrodinger equation, and its valid range has been determined by comparing with the results of the split-step Fourier method over a wide range of parameter values. With γ= 2㎞/sup -1/mW/sup -1/, the critical distance for the first order perturbation approach is estimated to be(equation omitted). The critical distance, Z/sub c/, is defined as the distance at which the normalized square deviation compared to the split-step Fourier method reaches 10/sup -3/. Including the second order perturbation will increase Z/sub c/ more than a factor of two, but the increased computation load makes the perturbation approach less attractive. In addition, it is shown mathematically that the perturbation approach is equivalent to the Volterra series approach, which can be used to design a nonlinear equalizer (or compensator). Finally, the perturbation approach is applied to obtain the sinusoidal response of the fiber, and its range of validity has been studied.
