  • The objective of this study is to examine the effect of hydrological factors on critical durations, and to analyze the relationship between the watershed characteristics and the critical duration of design rainfall in the medium sized catchments. Hydrological factors are used to return period, probable intensity formula, hydrograph method, effective rainfall and temporal pattern of design rainfall. Hydrologic analysis has done over the 44 medium sized catchments with $50{\sim}5,000{\beta}{\yen}$. Watershed characteristics such as catchment area, channel length, channel slope, catchment slope, time to peak, concentration of time and curve number were used to simulate correlation analysis. All of hydrological factors except return period influence to the critical duration of design rainfall. Also, it is revealed that critical duration is influenced by the watershed characteristics such as area, channel length, channel slope and catchment slope. Multiple regression analysis using watershed characteristics is carried out for the estimation of relationship among these. And the 7 type equations are proposed by the multiple regression using watershed characteristics and critical duration of design rainfall. The determination coefficient of multiple regression equations shows $0.96{\sim}0.97$.

  • Our experimental research focuses on manipulating pinning deflects to alter the phase diagram of vortex matter, creating new vortex phases. Vortex matter offers a unique opportunity for creating and studying these novel phase transitions through precise control of thermal, pinning and elastic energies. The vortex melting transition in untwinned YB $a_2$C $u_3$ $O_{7-}$ $\delta$/ crystals is investigated in the presence of disorder induced by particle irradiation. We focus on the low disorder regime, where a glassy state and a lattice state can be realized in the same phase diagram. We follow the evolution of the first order vortex melting transition line into a continuous transition line as disorder is increased by irradiation. The transformation is marked by an upward shift in the lower critical point on the melting line. With columnar deflects induced by heavy ion irradiation, we find a second order Bose glass transition line separating the vortex liquid from a Bose glass below the lower critical point. Furthermore, we find an upper threshold of columnar defect concentration beyond which the lower critical point and the first order melting line disappear together. With point deflect clusters induced by proton irradiation, we find evidence for a continuous thermodynamic transition below the lower critical point..

  • A bimetallic chip made of gold and silver was investigated in intensity interrogation mode to confirm enhancement of the SPR sensor resolution. Both reflectance curves of the bimetallic chip and the conventional gold chip was acquired and compared. The line width of the reflectance curve of the bimetallic chip was narrower than that of the conventional Au chip, resulting in steeper tangential slope. The reflectance was monitored at the angle related to the steepest tangential slope. The change in reflectance of the bimetallic chip was larger than that of the Au chip. The critical angle was analyzed by differentiating the reflectance with respect to incident angle twice. Acquiring the critical angle regarding to the sample informs the refractive index of the sample. Using various concentration of Bovine Serum Albumin, we confirmed that refractive index was linearly related to variation of reflectance of the bimetallic chip.

  • In this study, the effects of structured controversy strategy, individual learning, and traditional learning on the learning of environmental unit in ‘General Science’ were compared. One hundred and forty-three 10th-graders had been taught about environmental issues-self purification, biological concentration, acid rain, greenhouse effect, noise, and radioactivity-for 6 class hours. Prior to the instructions, environmental attitudes test and self-esteem test were administered. After the instructions, their achievements, critical thinking, environmental attitudes. self-esteem, and views on Science-Technology-Society were examined. The results of 2-way ANCOVA and/or Kruskal-Wallis test revealed that there were no significant main effects in the scores of the achievement test and the critical thinking test. The environmental attitudes test scores tended to be highest in the structured controversy group, and lowest in the traditional learning group. Self-esteem scores of the structured controversy group and the individual learning group were higher than those of the traditional learning group. Significant differences by students' prior achievement level in students' critical thinking, environmental attitudes, and views on Science-Technology-Society were also found.

  • The production of poly-$\beta$-hydroxybutyrate(PHB) from methanol by batch and fed-batch cultivations of Methylobacterium sp. GL-10 was studied. PHB accumulation was stimulated by the nutrients deficiency including, NH4+, SO42-, and K+. The nitrogen deficiency was the most critical factor for PHB accumulation. In batch cultivation, the maximum cell concentration and PHB content were 1.86g/l and 0.62g/l, respectively, with 1.0%(v/v) of methanol and 0.5g/1 of ammonium sulfate. The mass doubling time of Methylobacterum sp. GL-10 was in the range of 4-5 hrs. The cell growth and PHB accumulation were severely inhibited at the methanol concentration over than 2% (v/v). To overcome methanol Inhibition, constant feeding and intermittent feedillg fed-batch cultivations were adopted, using C/N molar ratio as a control factor. In constant feeding fed-batch process, cell concentration was increased up to 2.67g/1, and PHB yield was enhanced from 0.33 of batch culture to 0.53. The relatively low cell concentration was caused by methanol accumulated in culture broth at late growth phase. To prevent methanol accumulation and to maximize PHB production, DO-state intermittent fed-batch cultivation was attempted. The cell and PHB concentration was reached up to 4.55g/1 and 1.80g/1, respectively. It was possible to maintain methanol concentration low and also to feed nutrient of desired C/N molar ratio.

  • The purpose of this study was to apply molecular gastronomy and spherification methodology to persimmon deserts. We prepared 'persimmon calcium alginate beads' and investigated their physical and sensory characteristics by adding different concentrations of sodium alginate (0.4, 0.6, 0.8, and 1.0%). Lightness and yellowness decreased significantly as the concentration of sodium alginate increased. However hardness, springiness, chewiness, cohesiveness, and resilience but not adhesiveness tended to increase as the concentration of sodium alginate increased. The thickness of the beads increased as the concentration of sodium alginate increased. In contrast, the thickness of the membrane decreased as the concentration of alginate increased from 0.8 to 1.0% suggesting that the amount of sodium alginate had reached a critical point. Quantitative descriptive analysis showed that voluminosity, springiness, hardness, chewiness, and residue tended to increase as the concentration of sodium alginate increased. Overall preference reached a peak at 0.4% sodium alginate.

  • This paper presents, from a broad perspective, the manner in which various types of clusters and options for regional development have evolved in Korea over the past decade, with particular emphasis on who have taken initiative in establishing the clusters. Characterized by not only progress but also setbacks, two distinctive patterns have emerged: centralized de-concentration and regionalized concentration. Both the Korean government and numerous localities have continuously extended efforts to create different clusters, technology parks, special districts, etc. In many cases, local or regional governments have competed intensely for clusters to be located in their jurisdictions; in particular, concerted efforts to convince national governments to set up special districts have been witnessed. On the other hand, major localities have made their own efforts to generate large- and small-scale clustering projects. It remains to be seen how different outcomes or effectiveness these two approaches will make in the future. Following the review of relevant literature and practices, I examine the well-known national campaign and projects in the previous administration in Korea in the context of 'de-concentration' of economic values and resources. Thereafter, other cases initiated mostly by local governments are discussed; some of these clustering efforts and regional projects have fared well thus far, but some haven't. In the case of Daegu, the progress of some critical projects, such as the Daegu Technopolis and a Free Economic Zone, is elaborated.

  • Reinforced concrete starts to corrode when the chloride ion concentration which is the sum of included in concrete and penetrated from environments exceeds a certain level of critical chloride concentration. Therefore each country regulates the upper bounds of chloride amount in concrete and the regulations are different for each country due to its circumstances. In this study, the critical threshold chloride content according to unit cement amount is empirically calculated to propose a reasonable regulation method on the chloride amount. As a result, the critical threshold chloride content increases considerably according to cement content and it agrees with the established theories. The present regulations on total chloride amount 0.3 or 0.6 kg chloride ions per $1\;m^3$ of concrete does not reflect the influences of mix design, environmental conditions and etc. So it can be said that it is more reasonable to regulate the critical threshold chloride content by the ratio of chloride amount per unit cement content than by the total chloride content in $1\;m^3$ of concrete.
