  • In this paper, inquiry-oriented mathematics instruction was suggested as a teaching method to foster mathematical creativity. And it is argued that inquiry learning assist students to explore the mathematical problem actively and thus participate in mathematical activities like mathematicians. Through inquiry activities, the students learn mathematical ideas and develop new and creative mathematical ideas. Although creativity is often viewed as being associated with exceptional ability, for mathematics teacher who want to develop students' mathematical creativity, it is productive to view mathematical creativity as a mathematical ability that can be fostered in general school education. And also, both teacher and student have to think that they can develop mathematical ideas by themselves. That is very important to foster mathematical creativity in the mathematics class.

  • In the midst of a continued discourse and development concerning design education and its impact on innovation and creativity, I believe that design education still holds the key to enhancing design methodology while increasing creativity by having students take on several creative roles in an interactive and enjoyable studio course. Clearly, there exist impediments that block the creative process in our standard track in design education; however, a course entitled "The Creative Workshop" can overcome such obstacles. Through this course, a student can learn the essential skills of a designer: inventive thinking, a sense of aesthetics, and a spirit of collaboration. In addressing each of the three essential elements, this course has devised role-plays in the way of projects. Simply put, students will be required to demonstrate and, therefore, express their unique creativity that may have otherwise gone muted. Such creative expression can take form in a low stakes, open forum that heralds the invaluable attribute in design such as creative freedom. As a result, the true spirit of creativity is fostered rather than mere aesthetics and styling. Moreover, through role plays, the focus shifts its center from design, allowing each student to explore the uncharted areas of one's own creativity which may come naturally to some extend while disconcerting to others. It may prove particularly uncomfortable for Korean students whose ideas about education have been directly connected to the strict and regimented school system that stresses adherence to standardization such as the national college entrance exam. This course, therefore, is aimed stretch the scope and scale of students' creativity as they learn to collaborate on role plays, utilizing diverse skills from various disciplines.

  • In mathematical modeling tasks, where students are exposed to model-eliciting for real and open problems, students are supposed to formulate and use a variety of mathematical skills and tools at hand to achieve feasible and meaningful solutions using appropriate problem solving strategies. In contrast to problem solving activities in conventional math classes, math modeling tasks call for varieties of mathematical ability including mathematical creativity. Mathematical creativity encompasses complex and compound traits. Many researchers suggest the exhaustive list of criterions of mathematical creativity. With regard to the research considering the possibility of enhancing creativity via math modeling instruction, a quantitative scheme to scale and calibrate the creativity was investigated and the assessment of math modeling activity was suggested for practical purposes.

  • We examined the relations between Mathematical Creative Problem Solving Ability Test(MCPSAT: Kim etl. 1997) and Torrance Test of Creative Thinking Figural A (TTCT; adapted for Korea by Kim etl. 1999). The subjects in this study were 31 fifth-grade students. In the analysis of data, frequencies, percentiles, t-test correlation analysis were used. The results of the study are summarized as follows; First, we have the correlations between the originality of general creativity and the three elements--fluency, flexibility, and the total--of mathematical creativity (significant at p<.01). Second, We know the correlations between the total of general creativity and the three elements of mathematical creativity(significant at p<.05).

  • This study aims to compare self- and peer-assessments of science-gifted elementary students' scientific creativity. A science-gifted program on the Pascal's principle was implemented to 40 fifth-graders in the Science-Gifted Education Center for two weeks. After that, students presented their results from a scientific creativity task using the principle in class. The task was to devise a new and useful tool using the principle, and it included the students' self-assessment about their idea. During presentation, students were asked to assess the works of peers and write down the reasons that they gave the scores they gave. Shortly, student self- and peer-assessments about students' scientific creativity outcomes were compared. Based on two essential components of creativity, ideas that satisfy both originality and usefulness can be counted as scientifically creative. The main results of this study are as follows: First, the average scores of student self- and peer-assessments were 71.5 and 61.9. Second, the standard deviations of student self- and peer-assessments were 14.47 and 5.79. Third, among scientific creativity, originality, usefulness scores, only originality had a significant correlation between student self- and peer-assessment (r=.42). Fourth, the students were categorized into four groups according to the levels of their scores by student self- and peer-assessment. And the frequencies of peer-assessment group had a significant difference at p<0.05 level, according to self-assessment group (Chi Square=4.0000, df=1, p=0.0455). Fifth, through a case study by group, the results suggesting that self-assessment could be affected by the students' self-efficacy and perfectionism and such effect could also influence peer-assessment have been found. The result showed that how the student self- and peer-assessment of scientific creativity are different and what the students' thoughts on the evaluation of scientific creativity are. The findings suggested that there are several things to consider for the educators to make efforts to construct consistent assessment methods for scientific creativity.
