Image Processing-based Object Recognition Approach for Automatic Operation of Cranes

  • The construction industry is suffering from aging workers, frequent accidents, as well as low productivity. With the rapid development of information technologies in recent years, automatic construction, especially automatic cranes, is regarded as a promising solution for the above problems and attracting more and more attention. However, in practice, limited by the complexity and dynamics of construction environment, manual inspection which is time-consuming and error-prone is still the only way to recognize the search object for the operation of crane. To solve this problem, an image-processing-based automated object recognition approach is proposed in this paper, which is a fusion of Convolutional-Neutral-Network (CNN)-based and traditional object detections. The search object is firstly extracted from the background by the trained Faster R-CNN. And then through a series of image processing including Canny, Hough and Endpoints clustering analysis, the vertices of the search object can be determined to locate it in 3D space uniquely. Finally, the features (e.g., centroid coordinate, size, and color) of the search object are extracted for further recognition. The approach presented in this paper was implemented in OpenCV, and the prototype was written in Microsoft Visual C++. This proposed approach shows great potential for the automatic operation of crane. Further researches and more extensive field experiments will follow in the future.

  • Many production methods are tried to enhance the productivity efficiency. Parallel connected floating cranes are one of the examples to lift mega-blocks quickly and efficiently. However, a general operation manual to operate parallel connected floating cranes and a method to consider risks during lifting operation are not confirmed. And if each floating crane is operated by itself, it is very hard to cooperate. Therefore, Synchronized operation system is installed to control parallel connected floating cranes simultaneously and to be informed of each floating cranes data. And weighting factor is calculated by considering all hazards during the operation and the general operation manual is confirmed based on the factor. This paper introduces the procedure for lifting operations by parallel Connected Floating Cranes using synchronized operation system, and its applications to lifting operation of a heavy cargo such as barge lifting test, floating dock installation and 900 ton goliath crane replacement operation, etc.

  • These days, the number of automated container terminals is increasing to encourage the productivity of the container terminal inside and outside of the country. So far, there have been a lot of researches on the operating one type of equipments in a container terminal. However, there is still room for further improvement as none of equipment works itself but cooperate each other to finish a job, which means synchronization among the equipments is necessary. Among lots of equipments in a terminal, this paper concerns with the operation of ATCs (Automated Transfer Crane) and YTs (Yard Truck). The purpose of this paper is to find the efficient heuristic methods for operating ATCs and YTs that can set up a schedule in a real time. Moreover, using simulation this paper shows the efficient stacking strategy to decide the location of containers to be put and the proper selection range of YTs.

  • In recent years, the pileup of world ports is deepening as time goes by due to China effect and continuous increase of world trade volume. The shipping companies try to reduce their shipping cost by using mega vessels in the ports. Shipping companies consider most of the ships turnaround time as a critical factor when selecting a calling port for reducing cost. This paper will suggest how we can guarantee terminal QoS like ship waiting time ratio and ship residing time applying RFID(Radio Frequence IDentification) technology, raising up rapidly as a fundamental solution of new growing industry to port information system. Also, lead time of whole port logistics can be decreased for reduction of loading & discharging time and result from productivity improvement of Twin-lift G/C(Gantry Crane} as applying RFID technology to terminal operation. The purpose of this paper suggests that the new business model of U-Port which port QoS can be guaranteed using RFID based RTLS technology.

  • To increase the stevedore efficiency and service level at container terminal, it is essential to reduce working time of container crane which has a bottle neck in the logistic flow of container.   • A remarshalling is studied as an important operational strategy in an automated container terminal to enhance the productivity of container handling. This means the rearrangements of the containers scattered at a vertical yard block. The dispatching problem for remarshalling is selecting the remarshalling operation considering the available operation time and deciding the operation sequencing to maximize the effectiveness of remarshalling. This study develops the optimal mathematical model for yard crane dispatching problem with mixed integer program and explains dispatching problem using an example. However it is difficult to apply this model to a field problem because of its computational time. Therefore, we compare the representative 5 dispatching rules for real world adaption. In a numerical experiment, maximum weight ratio(MR) rule shows an overall outstanding performance.

  • Construction of large-scale container ports with the productivity improvements in container cranes shortened time of staying port to increase the level of service it harbors efforts accelerated. About container crane system exerted on the input, which is designed to look good performance considering the states feedback control system. The states observer designed of container cranes state variables that are expected to measurement noise or particular measurement signal. In the status of existing research, the feedback gain matrix and the state observer gain matrix are searched by being separated solving. But the feedback gain matrix and the state observer gain matrix are searched by RCGAs at once that be used robust search method in this paper.

  • With an increasing trend toward high-rise modular construction, the simultaneous use of tower cranes at a modular construction site has recently been observed. Tower crane layout planning (TCLP) has a significant effect on cost, duration, safety and productivity of a project. In a modular construction project, particularly, poor decision about the layout of tower cranes is likely to have negative effects like additional employment of cranes and redesign, which will lead to additional costs and possible delays. It is, therefore, crucial to conduct thorough inspection of field conditions, lifting materials, tower crane capacity to make decisions on the layout of tower cranes. However, several challenges exist in planning for a multi-crane construction site in terms of safety and collaboration, which makes planning with experience and intuition complicated. This paper suggests a multi-objective optimization model for selection of the number of tower cranes, their models and locations, which minimizes cost and conflict. The proposed model contributes to the body of knowledge by showing the feasibility of using multi-objective optimization for TCLP decision-making process with consideration of trade-offs between cost and conflict.

The Effect Analysis on the Container Terminal Productivity according to Combination of YT Pooling and Dispatching Rules (이송장비 풀링(Pooling)과 우선순위 규칙(Dispatching rule) 조합에 따른 컨테이너 터미널 생산성 효과분석)

  • Today, container terminals are fiercely competing to attract an increasing number of containers. As a way to improve terminal productivity, this study proposes two dispatching rules for yard truck allocation priorities. First, Multi-Attribute Dispatching Rule(MADR) is an allocation method to calculate the weighted sum of multiple factors affecting container terminal productivity and priority them. Especially, the workload of the quay crane was considered one of the factors to reduce the residence time of the ship. Second, Cycling Dispatching Rule(CDR) is the effective way to increase the number of double cycles that directly affect terminal productivity. To identify the effects of combinations of pooling and dispatching, a comparative experiments was performed on 8 scenarios that combined them. A simulation environment has been developed for experiments and the results have demonstrated that the combination of terminal level pooling and Multi-attribute Dispatching could be an excellent combination in KPIs consisting of GCR and delayed departure of ships, etc.
