Concrete slab curls and warps due to the uneven distribution of temperature and moisture and as the result, internal stress develops within the slab. Therefore, environmental loads must be considered in addition to the traffic loads to predict the lifespan of the concrete pavement more accurately. The strength of the concrete slab is gradually decreases to a certain level at which fatigue cracking is generated by the repetitive traffic and environmental loadings. In this study, a new fatigue regression model was developed based on the results from previously performed studies. To verify the model, another laboratory flexural fatigue test program which was not used in the model development, was conducted and compared with the predictions of other existing models. Each fatigue model was applied to analysis logic of cumulative fatigue damage of concrete pavement developed in the study. The sensitivity of cumulative fatigue damage calculated by each model was analyzed for the design factors such as slab thickness, joint spacing, complex modulus of subgrade reaction and the load transfer at joints. As the result, the model developed in this study could reflect environmental loading more reasonably by improving other existing models which consider R, minimum/maximum stress ratio.
This study was conducted to evaluate the necessity of the anchor lug system in continuously reinforced concrete pavement(CRCP) by comparing longitudinal displacements of CRCPs with and without anchor lugs, and to investigate the effect of horizontal cracking on CRCP performance by measuring the vertical displacements. The measurements before and after the anchor lug section was separated were conducted for 12 days in June, and for 14 days in August after the abrupt displacements according to cutting disappeared, respectively. This short term measurement results showed that when anchor lugs were installed, a daily displacement variation at any location was less than 0.1mm; therefore, longitudinal movements were negligibly small. When there were no anchor lugs, longitudinal displacements mainly occurred near the free end and the displacement variation was small; therefore, an expansion joint system seems to be employed at a CRCP terminus without installing anchor lugs. However, further studies are needed to verify the terminus behavior due to annual temperature changes. The horizontal crack width variation was ignorable and did not affect the vertical displacement of the slab. Therefore, the horizontal crack did not delaminate the slab and did not seem to reduce the structural capacity and performance of CRCP.
Dowel bars in the jointed concrete pavement are used to both provide load transfer across pavements joints and prevent the joint faulting leading to longer service life. On the contrary, the misplacement of dowel bar can provide negative results including the joint freezing(locking) that may cause the joint spatting and unexpected mid-slab cracking. The dowel bar can be placed using the assembly or dowel bar inserter (DBI) during the concrete pavement construction. In the domestic practice of the concrete pavement construction, the dowel bar is placed using the assembly method. This study primarily focuses on the comparison of these two dowel placement methods using the field data from the KHC test road in which both dowel placement methods have been applied to a certain length of the concrete pavement. The field data regarding the alignment of the dowel bars placed by both methods was collected using MIT-SCAN2, a nondestructive measuring equipment, and processed to compute Joint Score and Running Ave. Joint Score which are used as indicators of the dowel bar performance. The comparison of the methods for the dowel bar placement using these indicators shows that the DBI method provided much better alignment of the dowel bars reducing the risk of joint freezing than the assembly method. In order to improve the quality of the dowel bar placement using the assembly method, the current weak points of the assembly method including the fabrication, storage, and installation of dowel bar assembly were investigated and the solution was suggested. The improved dowel bar sets based on the suggested solution have been applied to an actual practice of the concrete pavement construction. The field data shows that the improved assembly method suggested in this study can highly reduce the risk of joint freezing.

Purchased rental housing users are possible to live in currently residing community consistently, have advantages for fewer problems of the phenomenon of social isolation, exclusion and preventing slumism of low-income families, are expected to increase in the future. First of all, the characteristics of residential environment, housing expenses and a head of household were examined for the residential environment evaluation of the residents of purchased rental housing, on the basis of this, the characteristics of internal and external house and residential location are examined each for the determinants of the residential environment satisfaction of purchased rental housing. The variables that affect residential satisfaction according to residential location are public facilities, educational facilities and welfare facilities respectively. In particular, the higher the satisfaction of access to welfare facilities, the higher the satisfaction of residential location of purchased rental housing was analyzed. The variables affecting the residential satisfaction according to the internal and external characteristics of house are significant in window status, cracking, heating facilities, housing scale and management.

Alkali-silica reaction (ASR) is a chemical reaction between alkalies in cement and chemically unstable aggregates and causes expansion and cracking of concrete. In the Present study, we studied the effects of metakaolin, which is a newly introduced mineral admixture showing excellent pozzolainc reaction property, on the inhibition of ASR. We prepared mortar-bars of various replacement ratios of metakaolin and conducted alkali-silica reactivity test (ASTM C 1260), compressive strength test and flow test. We also carefully analyzed the mineralogical changes in hydrate cement paste by XRD qualitative analysis. The admixing of metakaolin caused quick pozzolanic reaction and hydration reaction that resulted in a rapid decrease in portlandite content of hydrated cement paste. The expansion by ASR was reduced effectively as metakaolin replaced cement greater than 15%. This resulted in that the amounts of available portlandite decreased to less than 10% in cement paste. It is considered that the inhibition of ASR expansion by admixing of metakaolin was resulted by the combined processes that the formation of deleterious alkali-calcium-silicate gel was inhibited and the penetration of alkali solution into concrete was retarded due to the formation of denser, more homogeneous cement paste caused by pozzolanic effect. Higher early strength (7 days) than normal concrete was developed when the replacement ratios of metakaolin were greater than 15%. And also, late strength (28 days) was far higher than normal concrete for the all the replacement ratios of metakaolin. The development patterns of mechanical strength for metakaolin admixed concretes reflect the rapid pozzolanic reaction and hydration properties of metakaolin.

Commercialization of flexible OLED displays, such as rollable and foldable displays, has attracted tremendous interest in next-generation display markets. However, during bending deformation, cracking and delamination of thin films in the flexible display panels are the critical bottleneck for the commercialization. Therefore, measuring mechanical properties of the fragile thin films in the flexible display panels is essential to prevent mechanical failures of the devices. In this study, tensile properties of the metal and ceramic nano-thin films were quantitatively measured by using a direct tensile testing method on the water surface. Elastic modulus, tensile strength, and elongation of the sputtered Mo, MoTi thin films, and PECVD deposited SiNx thin films were successfully measured. As a result, the tensile properties were varied depending on the deposition conditions and the film thickness. The measured tensile property values can be applied to stress analysis modeling for mechanically robust flexible displays.

Heat of hydration of mass concrete is one of the most important factors that significantly affect structural quality and construction period. Therefore, appropriate methods to control heat of hydration are essential technologies for mass concrete construction. In this study, probability of thermal cracking was checked by thermal analysis prior to the construction of a turbine foundation in a domestic power plant. Subsequently, changes of concrete mix proportion and an effective curing method were proposed to control heat of hydration of mass concrete structures. Concrete manufactured by slag cement was proposed instead of concrete produced by ordinary Portland cement, and an automated curing method was proposed to improve the curing method using typical moist curing with blanket. The automated curing method maintains the temperature difference between center and surface of concrete below a setting value by temperature monitoring. Concrete with slag cement was used for actual construction. One of two identical turbine foundations was cured by an insulated curing method, and the other was cured by the automated curing method to compare the curing methods. And then, the effects of control of heat of hydration were evaluated based on temperature/strain monitoring and crack investigations.
In this paper, the modified singular fracture process zone (S-FPZ) model is proposed to consider variation of a fracture criterion for continuous crack propagation in concrete. The fracture properties of the proposed fracture model are strain energy release rate at a micro-crack tip and crack closure stress (CCS) versus crack opening displacement (COD) relationship in the FPZ. The proposed model can simulate the estimated fracture energy of experimental results. The analysis results of the experimental data shows that specimen geometry and loading condition did not affect the CCS-COD relation. But the strain energy release rate is a function of not only specimen geometry but also crack extension. Until 25 mm crack extension, the strain energy release rate is a constant minimum value, and then it increased linearly to the maximum value. The maximum fracture criterion occurred at the peak load for an large size specimen. The fracture criterion remains the maximum value after the peak load. The variation of the fracture criterion is caused by micro-cracking and micro-crack localizing. The fracture criterion of strain energy release rate can simply be the size effect of concrete fracture, and it can be used to quantify the micro-tracking and micro-crack localizing behaviors of concrete.
The Alkali-Silica Reaction(ASR) may cause a serious failure in the concrete pavements and structures. Several researches in some nations have conducted the continuous studies to prevent failure of the concrete structures by the ASR distress as well as the studies to manifest the mechanism. The researches on the ASR have not been performed affluently in Korea because the distress due to ASR has seldom been reported literarily. In this study, we tried to set up the systematic scheme practically for verifying the cause of distress due to ASR by using the visual inspections in field, the chemical method, petrographic analysis, and Electron Dispersive X-ray Spectrometer(EDX) method of Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM) in laboratory. The chemical method, petrographic method using SEM, and X-ray method were used to verify the cause of pattern crack on the surface and internal crack in the plain concrete pavement. It can be concluded that the distress of a specific site in plain concrete pavement was mainly due to ASR. The chemical method, the petrographic method and EDX method using SEM may be the effective tools for verifying the cause of AAR distresses.

In the present paper, we evaluate the effects of the safe-end length and thickness of the similar metal weld (SMW) of safety injection nozzles on stress distributions at the dissimilar metal weld (DMW). For this evaluation, we carry out detailed 2-D axisymmetric finite element analyses by considering four different values of the safe-end length and four different values of the thickness of SMW. Based on the results obtained, we found that the SMW thickness affects the axial stresses at the center of the DMW for the shorter safe-end length; on the other hand, it does not affect the hoop stresses. In terms of the safe-end length, the values of the axial and hoop stresses at the inner surface of the DMW center increase as the safe-end length increases. In particular, for the cases considered in the present study, the stress distributions at the DMW center can be categorized according to certain values of safe-end length.
