  • Cross-flaws are frequently encountered in practical rock engineering projects near horseshoe-shaped cavities, and their presence can significantly impact the failure mode of these cavities. This study utilizes a combination of laboratory experiments and numerical simulations to investigate the influence of cross-flaws on the failure mode of a horseshoe-shaped cavity. During the experimental tests, we varied the length of secondary flaw and the angle of the cross-flaws in the specimens, followed by subjecting them to biaxial compression. Our experimental results show that when the angle α between the primary and the secondary flaws is small (0° and 45°), only one crack is initiated at the vault of the cavity, resulting in a shear failure mode. Conversely, when the angle α is large (90° and 135°), two cracks are more likely to initiate at the vault of the cavity, leading to the failure mode of falling blocks in the surrounding rock. Furthermore, the circumferential stress at the cavity vault from numerical simulations results is consistent with this observed phenomenon. When the angle α is small, only one circumferential tensile stress concentration is observed at the cavity vault, resulting in the initiation of a single crack. In contrast, when the angle α is large, two stress concentrations appear at the vault of the cavity, leading to the initiation of two cracks from these locations.

  • This paper investigated the temperature history of mass concrete mock up structure considering different heat generation by varying with mixture proportion. Setting time difference between high early strength mixture (E-P) and retarding mixture (R-F30) was 14.5hours. Incorporation of $30\%$ of fly ash contributed to $10^{\circ}C$ of hydration heat reduction. In generally used C and D combination, bottom concrete shows earlier hydration, while E-J combination showed reverse tendency and thus, this method can reduce the crack occurrence. Therefore, heat generation difference method has beneficial effect on reducing crack induced by hydration heat resulting from heat generation difference between surface and center section.

  • The micro crack was occurred where the stress concentrated by the thermal stress which was induced during the cooling period after molding process or by the various reliability tests. In order to estimate the possibility of development from inside micro crack to outside fracture, the fracture toughness of EMC should be measured under the various applicable condition. But study was conducted very rarely for the above area. In order to provide a was to decide the fracture resistance of EMC (Epoxy Molding Compound) of plastic package which is produced by using transfer molding method, measuring fracture is studied. The specimens were made with various EMC material. The diverse combination of test conditions, such as different temperature, temperature /humidity conditions, different filler shapes, and post cure treatment, were tried to examine the effects of environmental condition on the fracture toughness. This study proposed a way which could improve the reliability of LOC(Lead On Chip) type package by comparing the measured $J_{IC}$ of EMC and the calculated J-integral value from FEM(Finite Element Method). The measured $K_{IC}$ value of EMC above glass transition temperature dropped sharply as the temperature increased. The $K_{IC}$ was observed to be higher before the post cure treatment than after the post cure treatment. The change of $J_{IC}$ was significant by time change. J-integral was calculated to have maximum value the angle of the direction of fracture at the lead tip was 0 degree in SOJ package and -30 degree in TSOP package. The results FEM simulation were well agreed with the results of measurement within 5% tolerance. The package crack was proved to be affected more by the structure than by the composing material of package. The structure and the composing material are the variables to reduce the package crack.ack.

  • This paper proposes a novel topology optimization method generating multiple materials for external linear plane crack structures based on the combination of IsoGeometric Analysis (IGA) and eXtended Finite Element Method (X-FEM). A so-called eXtended IsoGeometric Analysis (X-IGA) is derived for a mechanical description of a strong discontinuity state's continuous boundaries through the inherited special properties of X-FEM. In X-IGA, control points and patches play the same role with nodes and sub-domains in the finite element method. While being similar to X-FEM, enrichment functions are added to finite element approximation without any mesh generation. The geometry of structures based on basic functions of Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines (NURBS) provides accurate and reliable results. Moreover, the basis function to define the geometry becomes a systematic p-refinement to control the field approximation order without altering the geometry or its parameterization. The accuracy of analytical solutions of X-IGA for the crack problem, which is superior to a conventional X-FEM, guarantees the reliability of the optimal multi-material retrofitting against external cracks through using topology optimization. Topology optimization is applied to the minimal compliance design of two-dimensional plane linear cracked structures retrofitted by multiple distinct materials to prevent the propagation of the present crack pattern. The alternating active-phase algorithm with optimality criteria-based algorithms is employed to update design variables of element densities. Numerical results under different lengths, positions, and angles of given cracks verify the proposed method's efficiency and feasibility in using X-IGA compared to a conventional X-FEM.

  • This paper presents analytical methodologies for remaining life prediction of plain concrete structural components considering tension softening and size effects. Non-linear fracture mechanics principles (NLFM) have been used for crack growth analysis and remaining life prediction. Various tension softening models such as linear, bi-linear, tri-linear, exponential and power curve have been presented with appropriate expressions. Size effect has been accounted for by modifying the Paris law, leading to a size adjusted Paris law, which gives crack length increment per cycle as a power function of the amplitude of a size adjusted stress intensity factor (SIF). Details of tension softening effects and size effect in the computation of SIF and remaining life prediction have been presented. Numerical studies have been conducted on three point bending concrete beams under constant amplitude loading. The predicted remaining life values with the combination of tension softening & size effects are in close agreement with the corresponding experimental values available in the literature for all the tension softening models.

  • The present paper provides an engineering J estimation equation for surface cracked plates under combined bending and tension. The proposed equation is based on the reference stress approach, and the most relevant normalising loads to define the reference stress for accurate J estimations are given for surface cracked plates under combined bending and tension. Comparisons with J results from extensive 3-D FE analyses, covering a wide range of crack geometry, plate geometry and loading combination, show overall good agreement not only at the deepest point but also at arbitrary points along the crack front. for pure tension, agreement between the estimated J and the FE results is excellent, even at the surface point. On the other hand, for pure bending and combined bending and tension, the estimated J values become less accurate for locations close to the surface point. Thus the results in this paper will be useful to assess short-term fracture or low cycle fatigue of surface defects in plates under combined bending and tension.

  • This study investigated the fatigue lives and mechanical properties of the carbon black filled natural rubber for the vibration-proof parts of the railway vehicle and automobile. The carbon blacks were one of the sources of crack nucleation and crack propagation in the rubber matrix, like the cementite and the maganese sulfide in iron matrix. Different kinds of carbon blacks resulted in different fatigue lives, critical J-values, and fracture morphologies. It was noticed that the critical J-value remained almost the same regardless of the length of a pre-crack. In addition, different kinds of carbon blacks generated different fracture morphologies, and microscopic and macroscopic roughnesses. The critical J-value has linear relations to the roughness, and it seemed related to the size distribution of carbon black particles. By reviewing all the experi-mental data, we found the factors that were related to the fatigue lives, and the logarithmic value of the fatigue life could be linearly expressed by the combination of the critical J-value and the macroscopic roughness. We also proposed a new estimative equation of fatigue life.

  • This paper persents the flexural behavior of high performance concrete beams having different concrete filling conditions. Three tests were conducted on full-scale beam specimens with design concrete compressive strength of 400 kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$. Different concrete filling conditions were intentionally made such that the first beam specimen was soundly cast to obtain the perfect concrete filling condition. Second beam specimen was cast in such a way that up to the longitudinal tensile reinforcement from the top, good concrete was filled while poor concrete was poured for the bottom part to simulate the poor workamanship, workability and unsatisfactory compaction. Third beam specimens was cast in such a way that up to the neutral axis of the beam section from the top, good concrete was filled while so did for the bottom part as the second beam specimen. The test results were analyzed in terms of load-displacement response, formation of crack, crack width, crack spacing and shift of neutral axis. An evaluation of the ductile response fo three different beam specimens was made in combination with the ultimate load accoding to the three different concrete filling conditions.

  • To evaluate the stability of a rock slope with one pre-exiting vertical crack, this paper performs corresponding probabilistic stability analysis. The existence of cracks is generally ignored in traditional deterministic stability analysis. However, they are widely found in either cohesive soil or rock slopes. The influence of one pre-exiting vertical crack on a rock slope is considered in this study. The safety factor, which is usually adopted to quantity the stability of slopes, is derived through the deterministic computation based on the strength reduction technique. The generalized Hoek-Brown (HB) failure criterion is adopted to characterize the failure of rock masses. Considering high nonlinearity of the limit state function as using nonlinear HB criterion, the multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS) is used to accurately approximate the implicit limit state function of a rock slope. Then the MARS is integrated with Monte Carlo simulation to implement reliability analysis, and the influences of distribution types, level of uncertainty, and constants on the probability density functions and failure probability are discussed. It is found that distribution types of random variables have little influence on reliability results. The reliability results are affected by a combination of the uncertainty level and the constants. Finally, a reliability-based design figure is provided to evaluate the safety factor of a slope required for a target failure probability.
