RESONANCE EXCITATION AND THE SPIRAL-RING STRUCTURE OF DISK GALAXIES

  • Rings are common in disk galaxies. These rings are either indistinguishable from a pair of tightly wound spirals, or themselves are a part of the spiral structure. Furthermore, their occurrence is seen coincident with a bar in the center. In this paper, we interpret this spiral-ring structure as density waves resonantly excited by a rotating bar potential. The theory gives excellent agreement for the molecular spiral-rings in central parts. of nearby disk galaxies, observed by high resolution radio arrays. The same mechanism works for more distant spiral-rings in the outer parts of disk galaxies qualitatively, although the problem is complicated by the coupling of the stellar and gaseous disks.

  • This paper presents the simulation architecture and strategy for dynamic simulation of chemical process and describes key features of developed dynamic simulation system, MOSA(Multi-Objective Simulation Architecture). A plant structure may be partioned into several strong coupling units, called cluster. If this cluster is solved simultaneously, it is possible to simulate whole plant without introducing convergence problem of tear streams. In this study, a flexible modular approach based on clusters was proposed as a promising architecture for dynamic chemical process simulator.

  • In this study, a problem formulation and solution for design optimization of laminate composite cylindrical beam section is presented. The objective of this research is to determine the optimal dimension of the laminated composite cylindrical beam sections which has the equivalent flexural rigidities to those of the steel cylindrical beam sections. The analytical model is based on the laminate theory and accounts for the material coupling for arbitrary laminate stacking sequence configuration. The outer diameter and thickness of the beam are design variables. The solutions described are found using a global search algorithm, Genetic Algorithms (GA).

  • The noise and vibration of rolling piston-type compressors used in the most of the airconditional system is a serious and important problem occurred during turning on and off as well as during operating. To analyze the vibration occurred during turning on and oft, the vibration analysis of motor-compressor coupling is required. In this paper, through modeling of the motor, solving the force from the equations of motion of the moving parts and considering the stiffness of the rubber mounts, the analysis of vibration was performed.

  • Vibrational characteristics of coupled beam & plate system are considered on simple system, which consists of plates(2-subsystem) and beams(4-subsystem), using experimental statistical energy analysis(ESEA). First, damping and coupling loss factors of the system are determined by power injection method (PIM). Then, energy distribution of all the subsystem is estimated from the power balance equation. Finally, these quantities are compared with measured energy. The correlation of measured and estimated results for the sample problem is reasonably good.

  • Based on the transmission of coupled gap solitons in nonlinear periodic media, we present an all-optical switching scheme which has a novel architecture and principle. The proposed switch with an extremely small switching element can be realized on a semiconductor waveguide. We here investigate the switching performance with a GaAs waveguide in order to give criteria for the experimental realization of the all-optical switching phenomena. We also suggest a variation of an index-matching scheme to solve the technical problem such as the input-energy coupling into a periodic waveguide.

Computational design of an automotive twist beam

  • In recent years, the automotive industry has known a remarkable development in order to satisfy the customer requirements. In this paper, we will study one of the components of the automotive which is the twist beam. The study is focused on the multicriteria design of the automotive twist beam undergoing linear elastic deformation (Hooke's law). Indeed, for the design of this automotive part, there are some criteria to be considered as the rigidity (stiffness) and the resistance to fatigue. Those two criteria are known to be conflicting, therefore, our aim is to identify the Pareto front of this problem. To do this, we used a Normal Boundary Intersection (NBI) algorithm coupling with a radial basis function (RBF) metamodel in order to reduce the high calculation time needed for solving the multicriteria design problem. Otherwise, we used the free form deformation (FFD) technique for the generation of the 3D shapes of the automotive part studied during the optimization process.

  • Rotating disks are used in various machines such as floppy disks, hard disk, turbines and circular sawblades. The problems of vibrations of rotating disks are important in improving these machines. Many investigators have dealt with these problem. Specially, vibrations of a rotating flexible disk taking into account the effect of air is difficult problem in simulation. The governing equation of a rotating flexible disk coupled to the surrounding fluid is investigated by a simple mathematical model. And several important parameters concerned with the stability of a rotating flexible disk are defined. Coupling strength between air and rotating flexible disk is proportional to square of disk radius directly and square root of the all of bending rigidity, disk density and thickness inversely. Lift-to-damping coefficient has relation to the onset of disk flutter.

  • Phase angle in grid-connected inverter is important information for current control. When different loads are connected to PCC(Point of Common Coupling) of grid, distorted grid voltage is taken place by load utility generating distorted current. Especially, in case the grid voltage is distorted by low order frequency such as $3^{rd}$, $5^{th}$ harmonic, phase angle of PLL output is distorted. This paper analyze problem of current THD(Total Harmonic Distortion) due to distorted phase angle by distorted grid voltage, and propose control method compensating this problem. Also, it‘s validity is verified by simulation and experiment.

  • This paper describes the distribution power system econimical PQMS(Power quality monitoring system) of Utility. Recently, the korea power quality standard has been established based on the IEC Std. By IEC Std., the power quality assessment point is measured in PCC(Point of common coupling). In this case, the utility has to construct PQM system in all customer PCC point and the PQ meter cost would be very high in order to acquire the suitable data. Also the distribution system would be encounter the communication overload problem due to the huge data. Accordingly the utilities could not apply to PQM system in the distribution power system by the cost and communication problem. In this paper, the proposed economical PQMS has the voltage and current signal reiteration function and FFT operation function is transferred the server. Also the voltage and current measurement channels are minimized by a classified substation construction.
