  • In this study, rebar corrosion detection sensor was fabricated using multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). MWCNTs were pre-treated in the acid electrolytes to attach the carboxylic acid to the surface of MWCNTs. The fabricated sensor was attached on the surface of rebar and it detected the corrosion of steel using LCR meter with variation of capacitance. The surface morphology and electrical properties were characterized using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and electrical test equipment, respectively. To verify the corrosion detection characteristics, comparison experiment using plastic bar was performed. Moreover, mechanism of corrosion detection sensor was discussed.

  • This paper reviews available techniques for monitoring corrosion of steel in concrete. The need for early detection and diagnosis of corrosion related deterioration in reinforced structures is widely acknowledged. This is particularly important in reinforced concrete structures on account of the economic and social significance of the problem. The current generally used on-site procedure for corrosion monitoring of reinforced structures employs a method of half-cell surface potential measurements. While the technique has provided a useful means of delineating areas of high or low corrosion risk, there are difficulties in its use and interpretation when assessing rates of deterioration. Electrochemical techniques are by far the most suitable for corrosion monitoring purpose and meet most of the requirements. The aim of this paper is to describe the electric resistance sensor(ER sensor) and electrochemical techniques employed to monitor and estimate corrosion rates of reinforcement. Early detection and diagnosis of corrosion hazards allows preventive measures to be taken, hence the typically expensive repair of severely deteriorated structures can be avoided.

  • Corrosion of rebar embedded reinforced concrete is the main cause of collapse and degradation of reinforced concrete structure that many researches are recently focused on these works. Methods of evaluating rebar corrosion are divided into physical and electrochemical methods. However, the result of Conventional methods are less reliable due to effect of internal and external environments. In this study, rebar corrosion detection sensor for embedded rebar of RC structures is evaluated through immersion test in NaCl solustion for 160hours. From the results, Rebar corrosion was ongoing and corrosion products are produced on rebar surface. The voltage is decreased as amount of corrosion production increased.

  • Corrosion of rebar embedded reinforced concrete is the main cause of collapse and degradation of reinforced concrete structure. Degradation occurs in reinforced concrete structures from corrosion caused by the Chloride that the damage other than the severe degradation of the structure in terms of maintenance and construction when the huge expense required and deciding terms is hard. Therefore, early detection of rebar corrosion is important for efficient maintenance and repairing and planning. Meanwhile, how to evaluate the corrosion of the non-destructive measurements have been used a lot. In particular CM-II (corrosion meter) is used to measurement the natural potential, polarization resistance and the resistivity of the concrete, but has some disadvantages. Embedded mini-sensor has been developed in order to overcome these disadvantages. So Measurement corrosion for using the mini-sensor compares with the measured results CM-II (corrosion meter), the developed mini-sensor verify the validity.

  • A quartz crystal analyzer is utilized to monitor the corrosion process of an aluminum surface of a quartz crystal for marine sensor by sea water. A quartz crystal having 2000 $\AA$ of aluminum layer is installed in a specially designed cell and is in contact with sea water imitated electrolyte solution. While a constant potential is applied to the cell, the resonant frequency and resonant resistance are simultaneously measured using the quartz crystal analyzer. In addition, surface topographs are taken with an atomic force microscope(AFM) and the element analysis of the surface is conducted using an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer(EDX). The simultaneous measurement of resonant frequency and resonant resistance during the corrosion process explains the change of surface structure caused by the corrosion. The variation of resonant frequency addresses the amount surface metal dissolution. As a conclusion, it is found that a simple measurement using the quartz crystal analyzer can replace the complex monitoring employing large equipments in the investigation of a corrosion process of sensor surface.

  • In order to achieve effective corrosion monitoring of buried metal pipelines, a Novel nondestructive Testing (NDT) methodology using ultra-long (250 mm) Polymer Optical Fiber (POF) sensors coated with the Fe-C alloy film is proposed in this study. The theoretical principle is investigated to clarify the monitoring mechanism of this method, and the detailed fabrication process of this novel POF sensor is presented. To validate the feasibility of this novel POF sensor, exploratory research of the proposed method was performed using simulated corrosion tests. For simplicity, the geometric shape of the buried pipeline was simulated as a round hot-rolled plain steel bar. A thin nickel layer was applied as the inner plated layer, and the Fe-C alloy film was coated using an electroless plating technique to precisely control the thickness of the alloy film. In the end, systematic sensitivity analysis on corrosion severity was further performed with experimental studies on three sensors fabricated with different metal layer thicknesses of 25 ㎛, 30 ㎛ and 35 ㎛. The experimental observation demonstrated that the sensor coated with 25 ㎛ Fe-C alloy film presented the highest effectiveness with the corrosion sensitivity of 0.3364 mV/g at Δm = 9.32 × 10-4 g in Stage I and 0.0121 mV/g in Stage III. The research findings indicate that the detection accuracy of the novel POF sensor proposed in this study is satisfying. Moreover, the simple fabrication of the high-sensitivity sensor makes it cost-effective and suitable for the on-site corrosion monitoring of buried metal pipelines.

  • By introducing corrosion monitoring techniques, steel corrosion in concrete may be evaluated at early stage. The monitoring probes in concrete detect the causes (chlorides and $CO_2$) of steel corrosion by being cast into the concrete or diffusing in from the outside. Various systems for corrosion monitoring in concrete are reviewed in this paper. These techniques are classified according to monitoring purposes such as corrosion potential or corrosion rate of steel and causes for corrosion etc.. Today, special interests are converged in development of corrosion sensor as a monitoring method of new concept.

  • Some nondestructive diagnostic methods including various types of corrosion sensors have been investigated. Under these conditions, a new structure of sensor that has a pair of electrode and magneto-supply was proposed. In order to detect the edge of the iron rust part, three-poles touch-type corrosion sensor is now proposed. The iron rust pattern where the sensor touches is estimated by means of the impedance of the sensor, and the edge of the iron rust is recognized by comparing the three measured impedances. As the result, our proposed sensor is useful to detect the initial state of iron rust.

  • This paper presents the example of corrosion monitoring sensor that is applied to massive RC structure exposed to marine environments. Corrosion monitoring sensor is used as an early warning system to predict the initial stage of corrosion in concrete structures. So, it can be a good method to verify the design life and prepare measures for concrete deterioration in advance.
