Shot peening can be defined as the process of work hardening of the surface of components by means of propelled stream of spherical shot. Benefits due to shot peening are increase in resistance to fatigue, stress corrosion cracking, fretting, galling, erosion and closing of pores. In this study, the influence of shot peening on the corrosion was investigated on spring steel immersed in $3.5\%\;NaCl$. The immersion test was performed on the two kinds of specimens. Corrosion potential, polarization curve, residual stress and etc. were investigated from experimental results. From test results, the effect of shot peening on the corrosion was evaluated. The important results of the experimental study on the effects of shot peened spring steels on the environment corrosion are as follows; In case of corrosion potential, shot peened specimen shows more activated negative direction as compared with parent metal. Surface of specimen, which is treated with the shot peened, is placed as more activated state against inner base metal. It can cause the anti-corrosion effect on the base metal.
Outdoor exposure tests using of 7B04 aluminium alloy samples including plate, tensile and various SCC samples were carried out in Tuandao station, Shandong province (East of China) and Wanning station, Hainan province (South of China). Corrosion characteristics including weight loss, microstructure, tensile strength and SCC susceptibility were investigated. The corrosion rates in Tuandao and Wanning showed high to low and the corrosion rates changed to the following equation of $w=at^b$ (b<1). The corrosion of 7B04 aluminium alloy in Wanning was more serious than that in Tuandao. Pitting appeared at early stage of expose test, and it can be changed to general corrosion with test time extension. The 7B04 aluminium alloy of which specimen shapes are forging and thick plate also showed SCC (Stress corrosion cracking) in the marine atmosphere. The higher SCC sensitivity was observed in Wanning station than in Tuandao station. The 7B04 aluminium alloy with a high stress level was more sensitive to SCC. Intergranular and transgranular or a mixed mode of cracking can be observed in different marine exposure.
The investigation of corrosion effects on the tensile behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) members is very important in region prone to high corrosion conditions. In this article, an experimental study concerning corrosion effects on tensile behavior of RC members is presented. For this purpose, a comprehensive experimental program including 58 cylindrical reinforced concrete specimens under various levels of corrosion is conducted. Some of the specimens (44) are located in large tub containing water and salt (5% salt solution); an electrical supplier has been utilized for the accelerated corrosion program. Afterwards, the tensile behavior of the specimens was studied by means of the direct tension tests. For each specimen, the tension stiffening curve is plotted, and their behavior at various load levels is investigated. Average crack spacing, loss of cross-section area due to corrosion, the concrete contribution to the tensile response for different strain levels, and maximum bond stress developed at each corrosion level are studied, and their appropriate relationships are proposed. The main parameters considered in this investigation are: degree of corrosion ($C_w$), reinforcement diameter (d), reinforcement ratio (${\rho}$), clear concrete cover (c), ratio of clear concrete cover to rebar diameter (c/d), and ratio of rebar diameter to reinforcement percentage ($d/{\rho}$).
In this study, erosion tests and erosion-corrosion tests of Al5083-H321 aluminum alloy were conducted at various flow rates in seawater. The erosion tests were conducted at a flow rate of 0 to 20 m/s, and erosion-corrosion tests were performed by potentiodynamic polarization method at the same flow rate. Characteristic evaluation after the erosion test was conducted by surface analysis. Characteristic evaluation after the erosion-corrosion test was performed by Tafel extrapolation and surface analysis. The results of the surface analysis after the erosion test showed that surface damage tended to increase as the flow rate increased. In particular, intermetallic particles were separated due to the breakdown of the oxide film at 10 m/s or more. In the erosion-corrosion test, the corrosion current density increased as the flow rate increased. Additionally, the surface analysis showed that surface damage occurred in a vortex shape and the width of the surface damage tended to increase as the flow rate increased. Moreover, damage at 0 m/s, proceeded in a depth direction due to the growth of pitting corrosion, and the damaged area tended to increase due to acceleration of the intermetallic particle loss by the fluid impact.

The aim of this paper is to study corrosion inhibition of Aluminum with Capparis decidua extract. The study was performed in a 1.0 M solution of hydrochloric acid (HCl) and was monitored both by measuring mass loss and by using electrochemical and polarization methods. A scanning electron microscopy (SEM) technique was also applied for surface morphology analysis. The results revealed high inhibition efficiency of Capparis decidua extract. Our data also determined that efficiency is governed by temperature and concentration of extract. Optimum (88.2%) inhibitor efficiency was found with maximum extract concentration at 45 o C. The results also showed a slight diminution of aluminum dissolution when the temperature is low. Based on the Langmuir adsorption model, Capparis decidua adsorption on the aluminum surface shows a high regression coefficient value. From the results, the activation enthalpy (∆H#) and activation entropy (∆S#) were estimated and discussed. In conclusion, the study clearly shows that Capparis decidua extract acted against aluminum corrosion in acidic media by forming a protective film on top of the aluminum surface.
The influence of $H_2S$ on the corrosion of iron and the corrosion prevention mechanism of an inhibitor was investigated with a differential capacitance measurement and a weight loss measurement method. The results show that $H_2S$ accelerates both the anodic iron dissolution and the cathodic hydrogen evolution in most cases. However, $H_2S$ acts as an inhibitor of the corrosion of iron under certain special conditions. An EIS method is proposed to explain the ability of inhibitors.
The corrosive behavior of mild steel in 0.05 M to 10 M $H_2SO_4$ solutions containing different concentrations of tetrahydropyrimidine derivatives (THPM) was investigated using weight loss method, gasometric technique, electrochemical studies which include AC - impedance and potentiodynamic polarization method, atomic absorption studies and synergistic effect. The results obtained reveal that THPM derivatives is an efficient mixed type inhibitor but slightly anodic and it is more effective in reducing corrosion of mild steel in $H_2SO_4$ media. The adsorption of the inhibitor on the mild steel surface obeys the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. The thermodynamic parameters of adsorption reveal a strong interaction and spontaneous adsorption of THPM on the mild steel surface. The influence of temperature and inhibitor concentration on the corrosion of mild steel has also been investigated.
In this study, sand cast AZ91E and zirconium grain refined MEZ are representative of two typical groups of magnesium alloys: those containing aluminium and those containing no aluminium but with zirconium as a grain refiner. The corrosion performance of these two alloys was evaluated and compared in 5%wt NaCI solution through measurements of weight loss and polarisation curves and examination of microstructure. Corrosion damage of AZ91E was deeper and more localised than that of MEZ, while MEZ had a lower rate of cathodic hydrogen evolution and a higher rate of anodic dissolution than AZ91E. These differences in behaviour can be related to the differences in microstructure and chemical composition between the two alloys.
The chemical and geometric effects of weld on flow-accelerated corrosion (FAC) of SA106 Gr.C low alloy steel pipe in 3.5wt% NaCl and simulated feedwater of nuclear power plant have been investigated by using rotating cylinder electrode. Polarization test and weight loss test were conducted and compared at rotating speed of 2000rpm (3.14m/s) with the variables of chemical and geometric parameters. The results showed that the chemical effects were relatively larger than the geometric effects, and the welded parts were the local anode and preferentially corroded, which could be explained by the differences between microstructural and compositional parameters. On the other hand, under active corrosion conditions, the heat affected zone were severely corroded and microstructural effects became the important role in the whole process.
Shot peening is an effective method of improving the fatigue strength of components and structures. The compressive residual stress produced by surface plastic deformation with shot peening is usually regarded as the major factor in increasing fatigue strength. In this study, the influence of shot peening on corrosion was investigated. Spring steel immersed in $3.5\%$ NaCl prior was used to evaluate the effect of shot peening on fatigue properties. The immersion test was performed on the five kinds of specimens with shot peened and unpeened. The distributions of residual stresses of shot peened spring steels were measured in an X-ray diffraction apparatus, using the two-point method. Corrosion potential, polarization curve, residual stress, etc. were investigated, based on the experimental results. From test results, the effect of shot peening on the corrosion was evaluated.
