  • A zero-voltage-transition(ZVT) full bridge (FB) boost converter for single stage power factor correction (PFC) in distributed power system is proposed. A simple auxiliary circuit provides zero-voltage-switching(ZVS) condition to all semiconductor devices without imposing additional voltage and current stresses and loss of PWM capability. The proposed boost converter provides both input power factor correction and direct conversion from $110{\sim}220VAC$ line to 300VDC bus with single power stage. Operational principle, analysis of the proposed converter are described and verified by computer simulation and experimental results from a 1.5 kW, 80 kHz laboratory prototype.

  • An experimental study has been performed on the effect of baffle parameters on shell -side heat transfer in a conventional shell-and-tube heat exchanger. The baffle spacing distance and the number of baffle were varied to investigate the behavior of unequal baffle spacing correction factor which is appeared in the Bell Delaware method for prediction of the shell-side heat transfer coefficient. It was obvious that heat duties obtained from the experiment significantly deviated from those calculated by the conventional Bell-Delaware method. A new correlation of the unequal baffle spacing correction factor was developed. It was shown that the new correlation improves the accuracy of the Bell-Delaware method considerably. This result may induce the use of the Bell-Delaware method in developing a computer software for design of shell-and-tube heat exchangers.

  • The simple supported reinforced concrete slab bridges are analyzed by the specially orthotropic laminates theory. This method, however, may be too difficult for some practising engineers. In this paper, the result of analysis for such plate by means of the beam theory with unit width is reported. By using the "correction factor", the accurate solution for the plate can be obtained by the beam theory. By using the "correction factor", the accurate solution for the plate can be obtained by the beam theory. The plate aspect ratio considered is from 1 : 1 to 1 : 6. The result of this paper can be used for simply supported slab bridges analysis.

  • This study is to develop the simplified formulae for added mass coefficient of a 2-D floating body with a semi-circle section in a finite water depth. The semi-circle floating body may represent a simplified midship section transformed by Lewis form, which can be used for the ship motion analysis by strip theory. Since the added mass coefficient varies with motion frequencies and sea bottom effect, the correction factor representing the effect of water depth and frequencies is developed for accurate prediction of added mass. Using a two-dimensional numerical wave tank (NWT) technique based on the boundary element method (BEM) including sea bottom boundary the reference values of added mass are calculated to develop the correction factor. For verification and effectiveness of the formulae, the predicted added mass coefficients for various frequencies and water depth ratios are compared with the calculated values from NWT technique.

  • A single-stage power factor correction AC/DC converter with a simple link voltage suppressing circuit (LVSC) for the universal line application is proposed. Using this simple circuit, a low link voltage can be realized without deadbands at line zero-crossings. The proposed converter is analyzed and a prototype converter with 5V, 12A output is implemented to verify the performance. The experimental results show that the link voltage stress and efficiency are about 447V and 81%, respectively.

  • Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) is used in spark ignition (SI) engines. Fuel injection rate of an injector is affected by fuel temperature and pressure in LPG liquid injection systems for either a multi-point-injection (MPI) or a direct injection (DI) engine. Even fuel injection conditions are varied, the air-fuel ratio should be accurately controlled to reduce exhaust emissions. In this study, a correction factor fur the fuel injection rate of an injector is derived from density ratio and pressure difference ratio. A compensation method of injected fuel amount is proposed for a fuel injection control system. The experimental results for the LPG liquid injection system in a SI engine show that this system works well fur a full range of engine speed and load condition, and the air-fuel ratio is accurately controlled by the proposed correction factor.

  • Continuous conduction mode (CCM) boost converters are commonly used in home appliances and various industries because of their simple topology and low input current ripples. However, these converters suffer from several disadvantages, such as hard switching of the active switch and reverse recovery problems of the output diode. These disadvantages increase voltage stresses across the switch and output diode and thus contribute to switching losses and electromagnetic interference. A new topology is presented in this work to improve the switching characteristics of CCM boost converters. Zero-current turn-on and zero-voltage turn-off are achieved for the active switches. The reverse-recovery current is reduced by soft turning-off the output diode. In addition, an input current sensorless control is applied to the proposed topology by pre-calculating the duty cycles of the active switches. Power factor correction is thus achieved with less effort than that required in the traditional method. Simulation and experimental results verify the soft-switching characteristics of the proposed topology and the effectiveness of the proposed input current sensorless control.

  • For passive power factor correction, the valley fill circuit approach is attractive for low power applications because of low cost, high efficiency, and simple circuit design. However, to vouch for the product quality, two dc-link capacitors in the valley fill circuit should be selected to withstand the peak rectified ac input voltage. The common mode (CM) and differential mode (DM) choke should be used to suppress the electromagnetic interference (EMI) noise, thereby resulting in large size volume product. This paper presents the practical design and implementation of a valley fill flyback converter with reduced dc link capacitors and EMI magnetic volumes. By using the proposed over voltage protection circuit, dc-link capacitors in the valley fill circuit can be selected to withstand half the peak rectified ac input voltage, and the proposed CM/DM choke can be successfully adopted. The proposed circuit effectiveness is shown by simulation and experimentally verified by a 78W prototype.

  • A novel pseudo-continuous conduction mode (PCCM) voltage-fed single-stage power factor correction (PFC) full-bridge battery charger is proposed in this paper. By connecting a freewheeling transistor in parallel with an input inductor, the PFC cell can operate in the PCCM with a constant duty ratio. Thus, the dc/dc stage can be designed using this constant duty ratio and the restriction on the duty ratio of the PFC cell is eliminated. As a result, the input current distortion is less and the dc bus voltage becomes controllable over the wide output power range of the battery charger. Moreover, the operation principle of the dc/dc stage is designed to be similar to that of a conventional phase-shifted full-bridge converter. Therefore, it is easy to implement. In this paper, the operation of the new converter is explained, and the design considerations of the controller and key parameters are presented. Simulation and experimental results obtained from a 1 kW prototype are given to confirm the operation of the proposed converter.

  • Critical conduction mode boost power factor correction converters operating at the boundary of continuous conduction mode and discontinuous conduction mode have been widely used for power applications lower than 300W. This paper proposes an enhanced variable on-time control method for the critical conduction mode boost PFC converter to improve the total harmonic distortion characteristic. The inductor current, which varies according to the input voltage, is analyzed in detail and the optimal on-time is obtained to minimize the total harmonic distortion with a digital controller using a TMS320F28335. The switch on-time varies according to the input voltage based on the computed optimal on-time. The performance of the proposed control method is verified by a 100W PFC converter. It is shown that the optimized on-time reduces the total harmonic distortion about 52% (from 10.48% to 5.5%) at 220V when compared to the variable on-time control method.
