Interleaved Boost-Flyback Converter with Boundary Conduction Mode for Power Factor Correction

  • This paper presents a new interleaved pulse-width modulation (PWM) boost-flyback converter to achieve power factor correction (PFC) and regulate DC bus voltage. The adopted boost-flyback converter has a high voltage conversion ratio to overcome the limit of conventional boost or buck-boost converter with narrow turn-off period. The proposed converter has wide turn-off period compared with a conventional boost converter. Thus, the higher output voltage can be achieved in the proposed converter. The interleaved PWM can further reduce the input and output ripple currents such that the sizes of inductor and capacitor are reduced. Since boundary conduction mode (BCM) is adopted to achieve power factor correction, power switches are turned on at zero current switching (ZCS) and switching losses are reduced. The circuit configuration, principle operation, system analysis, and design consideration of the proposed converter are presented in detail. Finally, experiments conducted on a laboratory prototype rated at 500W were presented to verify the effectiveness of the converter.

Automatic Power Factor Correction Using a Harmonic-Suppressed TCR Equipped with a New Adaptive Current Controller

  • In this paper, a new continuously and linearly controlled capacitive static VAR compensator is proposed for the automatic power factor correction of inductive single phase loads in 220V 50Hz power system networks. The compensator is constructed of a harmonic-suppressed TCR equipped with a new adaptive current controller. The harmonic-suppressed TCR is a new configuration that includes a thyristor controlled reactor (TCR) shunted by a passive third harmonic filter. In addition, the parallel configuration is connected to an AC source via a series first harmonic filter. The harmonic-suppressed TCR is designed so that negligible harmonic current components are injected into the AC source. The compensator is equipped with a new adaptive closed loop current controller, which responds linearly to reactive current demands. The no load operating losses of this compensator are negligible when compared to its capacitive reactive current rating. The proposed system is validated on PSpice which is very close in terms of performance to real hardware.

  • 본 논문에서는 SMPS(Switch-Mode Power Supply)의 역률을 개선할 수 있는 power factor correction(PFC) IC를 설계하였다. 설계된 PFC IC에는 전원장치의 power MOSFET을 구동할 수 있는 기능 이외에도 과전압, 과전류 및 단락보호 기능이 포함되어 있다. 또한 시스템이 대기상태에 있는 경우, 전압 및 전류 feedback 제어에 의해 효과적으로 대기전력을 절감할 수 있도록 설계하였다. 설계된 PFC IC는 시스템이 대기상태에서 일정시간동안 부하변동이 없을 경우 이를 감지하여 자동으로 시스템을 off 시켜 대기전력 소모를 최소화 하는 기능을 포함하고 있다.

  • In this paper, a multiple coupling inductor with expandable-integrated magnetic structure was proposed to enable miniaturization of external switched mode power supply (SMPS) for a large display. Inductance formula of the proposed inductor structure was derived through magnetic circuit analysis for a simple inductance designing process. The proposed inductor was applied into a 1kW class interleaved bridgeless power factor correction circuit which requires four inductors, and experimental steady state result of the circuit was compared. According to the experimental result, it was found that the proposed multiple coupling inductor shows the electrical characteristics that can replace the conventional separated inductors and is suitable for miniaturization of the SMPS since the circuit configuration is possible with one shared inductor.

  • Building deterioration reflects the degradation of basic building performance including structural performance, energy performance, durability, and safety, and it also includes perceived deterioration, which considers a user-based perspective. More than 50% of the existing buildings in Korea are over 15 years old and public buildings compose 2.5% of all buildings domestically. Therefore, there are several different problems, such as poor energy efficiency, structural performance, and safety. To address the challenges of increasing stock in deteriorated buildings, it is necessary to make decisions about reconstruction or renovation. In this study, we propose a new method to evaluate public building value with a contingent valuation method (CVM). By estimating willing-to-pay (WTP) from users of private buildings in similar situation with the public building, it is possible to compare market prices and calculate a correction factor to adjust the WTP data. Finally, we apply the correction factor to the WTP of a public building and estimate market price, willingness to pay (WTP).   • In case that electronic ballast employing a valley-fill passive power factor correction (PFC) circuit is used for feeding fluorescent lamps, a new method to reduce crest factor of the lamp current is studied in this paper. In order to reduce crest factor to lower value, a pulse frequency modulation technique based on the waveform of the dc-link voltage which is predetermined by the passive PFC circuit, is taken into the switching control action of the electronic ballast. An equation-based analysis between the crest factor of lamp current and the effect of varying the inverter switching frequency is comprehensively performed.

Approximation of most penetrating particle size for fibrous filters considering Cunningham slip correction factor

  • In the estimation of the aerosol single fiber efficiency using fibrous filters, there is a size range, where the particles penetrate most effectively through the fibrous collectors, and corresponding minimum single fiber efficiency. For small particles in which the diffusion mechanism is dominant, the Cunningham slip correction factor (Cc) affects the single fiber efficiency and the most penetrating particle size (MPPS). Therefore, for accurate estimation, Cc is essential to be considered. However, many previous studies have neglected this factor because of its complexity and the associated difficulty in deriving the appropriate parameterization particularly for the MPPS. In this study, the expression for the MPPS, and the corresponding expression for the minimum single fiber efficiency are analytically derived, and the effects of Cc are determined. In order to accommodate the slip factor for all particle-size ranges, Cc is simplified and modified. Overall, the obtained analytical expression for the MPPS is in a good agreement with the exact solution.

Stress intensity factors for double-edged cracked steel beams strengthened with CFRP plates

  • This paper presents a theoretical and finite element (FE) study on the stress intensity factors of double-edged cracked steel beams strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) plates. By simplifying the tension flange of the steel beam using a steel plate in tension, the solutions obtained for the stress intensity factors of the double-edged cracked steel plate strengthened with CFRP plates were used to evaluate those of the steel beam specimens. The correction factor α1 was modified based on the transformed section method, and an additional correction factor φ was introduced into the expressions. Three-dimensional FE modeling was conducted to calculate the stress intensity factors. Numerous combinations of the specimen geometry, crack length, CFRP thickness and Young's modulus, adhesive thickness and shear modulus were analyzed. The numerical results were used to investigate the variations in the stress intensity factor and the additional correction factor φ. The proposed expressions are a function of applied stress, crack length, the ratio between the crack length and half the width of the tension flange, the stiffness ratio between the CFRP plate and tension flange, adhesive shear modulus and thickness. Finally, the proposed expressions were verified by comparing the theoretical and numerical results.

수용가에 설치된 캐패시터 뱅크의 역률개선 및 고조파 저감에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Power Factor Correction and Harmonics Reduction of Capacitor Banks installed at Customers)

  • 대부분의 수용가 부하와 전력 설비는 근본적으로 유도성이고 지상 역률로 운영되고 있다. 수용가에 캐패시터 뱅크를 적용하면 역률 개선과 무효전력 공급, 전압 상승, 전력 손실 저감과 전기요금 저감 등 많은 혜택이 있다. 또한 캐패시터 뱅크를 설치하면 고조파와 같은 전력 품질에 문제를 야기시킬 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 수용가에 설치된 캐패시터 뱅크의 역률 개선 및 고조파 저감을 심도 있게 분석한다. 사례연구 시스템은 EDSA 프로그램으로 시뮬레이션하였다.

기후변화 시나리오 편의보정 기법에 따른 강우-유출 특성 분석 (Analysis of Rainfall-Runoff Characteristics on Bias Correction Method of Climate Change Scenarios)

  • Runoff behaviors by five bias correction methods were analyzed, which were Change Factor methods using past observed and estimated data by the estimation scenario with average annual calibration factor (CF_Y) or with average monthly calibration factor (CF_M), Quantile Mapping methods using past observed and estimated data considering cumulative distribution function for entire estimated data period (QM_E) or for dry and rainy season (QM_P), and Integrated method of CF_M+QM_E(CQ). The peak flow by CF_M and QM_P were twice as large as the measured peak flow, it was concluded that QM_P method has large uncertainty in monthly runoff estimation since the maximum precipitation by QM_P provided much difference to the other methods. The CQ method provided the precipitation amount, distribution, and frequency of the smallest differences to the observed data, compared to the other four methods. And the CQ method provided the rainfall-runoff behavior corresponding to the carbon dioxide emission scenario of SRES A1B. Climate change scenario with bias correction still contained uncertainty in accurate climate data generation. Therefore it is required to consider the trend of observed precipitation and the characteristics of bias correction methods so that the generated precipitation can be used properly in water resource management plan establishment.
