Thermal stress intensity factor solutions for reactor pressure vessel nozzles

  • To ensure the safety margin of a reactor pressure vessel (RPV) under normal operating conditions, it is regulated through the pressure-temperature (P-T) limit curve. The stress intensity factor (SIF) obtained by the internal pressure and thermal load should be obtained through crack analysis of the nozzle corner crack in advance to generate the P-T limit curve for the nozzle. In the ASME code Section XI, Appendix G, the SIF via the internal pressure for the nozzle corner crack is expressed as a function of the cooling or heating rate, and the wall thickness, however, the SIF via the thermal load is presented as a polynomial format based on the stress linearization analysis results. Inevitably, the SIF can only be obtained through finite element (FE) analysis. In this paper, simple prediction equations of the SIF via the thermal load under, cool-down and heat-up conditions are presented. For the Korean standard nuclear power plant, three geometric variables were set and 72 cases of RPV models were made, and then the heat transfer analysis and thermal stress analysis were performed sequentially. Based on the FE results, simple engineering solutions predicting the value of thermal SIF under cool-down and heat-up conditions are suggested.

  • Test results of four reinforced concrete two-span continuous deep beams are summarized. Main variables were the configuration of web opening reinforcement. Shear span-to-overall depth ratio and the size of the web opening were fixed by 1.0 and 0.5 a $\times$ 0.2 h, respectively. To control diagonal crack and enhance strength, it can be recommended that diagonal reinforcement crossing the crack plane joining between loading points and corner of openings should be provided.

베어링메탈 제조공정에 따른 결함발생 및 피로균열 전파특성 (Properties of Defect Initiation and Fatigue Crack Growth in Manufacturing Process of Bearing Metal)

  • A study has been made on defects which are formed in manufacturing processes of engine bearing and also on fatigue crack growth behavior in each step of bearing metal manufacturing. After the first step(sinter brass powder on steel plate ; Series A) many voids are made on brass surface and its size is decreased by the second step(rolling process of sintered plate ; Series B). After the third step(re-sintering step of brass powder and rolling ; Series C) the number of voids is decreased and its type shows line. The time of fatigue crack initiation and the growth rate of fatigue crack are in order of Series A, Series B, Series C. These reasons are that void fosters the crack initiation and growth, and residual stress made by rolling process effects on the crack growth rate in Series B, C. In forming and machining processes by use of final bearing metal, crack was observed at internal corner of flange and peeling off was observed at junction between steel and brass. Owing to the above crack and peeling off, it is considered that there is a possibility of fatigue fracture during the application time.

라운딩 펀치에 의한 프레팅 상태에서의 균열 해석 (Crack Analysis under Fretting Condition by Rounded Punch)

  • Surface edge crack subjected to contact stresses is analysed. A punch with corner radii is considered to press the semi-infinite plane. Partial slip problem is solved when a shear force is applied to the punch. Dislocation density function method is used to solve the present mixed mode crack problem. The crack length of positive K1 is examined, which is affected by the ratio of the flat portion to the total width of the punch. Surface traction during one cycle of the shear force is evaluated to simulate the fretting condition. The compliance change of the contact surface is also investigated during the shear cycle. It is found that the crack grows during only a part of the cycle, which may be termed as effective period of crack growing. A design method for restraining the fretting failure is discussed, from which recommendable geometry of the punch is suggested.

  • Ion implantation, photo-lithography, Ar ion milling과 hot press 법을 이용한 micro-fabrication techrique을 사용하여 고순도 알루미나 단결정인 사파이어의 내부에, 조절된 Ca의 첨가량을 갖고 있는, crack과 비슷한 형태의 기공들을 형성시켰다. 이 bi-cryslal을 각각의 온도에서 열처리하여 Ca 이온이 고온에서 알루미나의 morphology와 hcaling에 미치는 영향을 관찰하였다. 열처리 온도가 올라감에 따라서 crack-like pore의 내부에 hcxagonal bridging ligaments가 생성되었는데, 열처리 온도와 Ca의 첨가량이 증가할수록 크기가 커지는 것을 관찰할 수 있었고, 생성된 hexagonal bndgmg ligaments는 열처리가 진행됨에 따라 서서히 커지면서 모서리가 둥글어지는 현상을 관찰할 수 있었다. Bicrystal 내부에 형성된 crack-like pore는 열처리가 진행되면서 edge regression. ligamcnt growth 및 flow의 3가지의 특징적인 형태로 진행되었다. 이때 edge regression은 상대적으로 저온에서부터 전체 crack-like pore에서 서서히 일어나기 시작하였으며, ligament growth는 일부 crack-like pore에서 진행되있으며, 대단히 빠른 속도로 crack healing이 진행됨을 추정할 수 있었다. Flow는 $1800^{\circ}C$ 이상의 고온에서 모든 crack-like pore에 걸쳐서 느리게 일어남을 알 수 있었다.

중수로핵연료 봉단마개 용접부의 기계적 특성과 초음파 시험 (Mechanical Strength and Ultransonic Testing of End Cap Welds in Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor Fuel)

  • The weld quality of end cap welds in Pressurized Heavy Water Reactor (PHWR) Fuel is extremely important for the fuel performance in the nuclear reactor. The quality of resistance upset welds is currently evaluated mainly by the metallographic examination although it reveals only two weld cross-sections in a circumference welds. This investigation was, firstly, carried out to determine whether the ultrasonic examination would be applied to detect weld defects in the end cap welds and, secondly, to measure the mechanical strength of upset butt welds as a function of phase shift percentage. The major results obtained in this study are as follows: 1. The weld current and amount of upset shrinkage linearly increased with increasing the phase shift percentage. 2. Above the phase shift 55%, the defects in the welds were completely eliminated with increasing the phase of sound weld was over the thickness of cladding tube. 3. The ultrasonic testing well detected such defects in the end cap welds as upset external crack, upset split, corner crack and irregular weld flash comparing with the results of metallography. 4. The micro-fissure in the corner of the end cap welds was reliably detected by ultrasonic testing. 5. The mechanical strength in the welds increased with increasing phase shift percentage but the fracture did't occur in the welds above 55%.

강박스 거더교에서 정적 거동에 의한 손상 탐지 (Damage Detection in Steel Box Girder Bridge using Static Responses)

  • 정적 손상 탐지방법은 동적 방법과 비교해서 실제 적용하기에 단순하고 효과적이다. 본 논문에서는 정적데이타를 이용하는 방법으로 변위, 처짐각, 곡률을 이용한 강박스 교량의 손상 탐지 방법에 대해서 연구하였다. 변위는 유한요소 해석에서 얻고, 처짐각과 곡률은 변위로부터 중앙차분법을 이용하여 구하였다. 손상되지 않은 경우와 손상된 경우의 응답차의 절대값으로 손상의 위치를 탐지하였다. 손상은 박스의 모서리 균열을 singular 요소를 사용하여 직접 모델링하여, 실질적인 거동을 분석하였다. 해석 결과 응답차의 절대값으로 손상의 위치를 탐지하기에 매우 효과적이었다.

축소 철근콘크리트 벽체의 내력과 균열진전에 대한 개구부모서리 균열제어 띠의 영향 (Effect of Crack Control Strips at Opening Corners on the Strength and Crack Propagation of Downsized Reinforced Concrete Walls)

  • 이 연구의 목적은 철근콘크리트 벽체의 내력, 변형 및 균열진전에 대한 개구부 모서리의 사인장 균열 제어를 위한 다양한 보강방법들이 효율성을 평가하는 것이다. 개구부 모서리의 사인장 균열제어 보강방법으로서 이 연구에서 제안한 균열제어 띠, 기존의 경사보강근 배근방법, 그리고 응력분산곡면판을 선택하였다. 균열제어 띠에서는 균열치유 기능성이 부여된 것도 함께 고려하였다. 개구부 주위의 체적변화 및 균열 폭 진전을 평가하기 위하여 개구부 모서리에서 사인장 균열 유도를 위한 축소 벽체 실험을 수행하였다. 실험결과 균열제어 띠는 경사보강근 및 응력분산곡면판에 비해 개구부 주위의 체적변화 감소 및 개구부 모서리 균열 폭 제어에 효율적이었다. 균열 치유 기능이 포함된 균열제어 띠는 사전 실험에서 발생한 균열들을 치유하면서 축소 벽체의 내력 향상 및 균열 폭 감소에 가장 좋은 성능을 보였다.
