Preparation of PEG Microparticles Containing Coriander Essential Oil Using Supercritical PGSS Process (초임계 PGSS 공정을 이용한 Coriander 정유 함유 PEG 미세입자 제조)

  • In the present study, biocompatible poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) microparticles containing coriander essential oil were prepared using a supercritical particles from gas saturated solution (PGSS) process to improve the stability of the coriander oil. The effects of various process parameters such as temperature, pressure, and nozzle diameter on the morphology and entrapment efficiency of coriander oil loaded PEG microparticles were then investigated. A positive influence on the formation of spherical microparticles was observed with increasing temperature and decreasing pressure. Furthermore, somewhat more porous microparticles were produced with an increase in pressure. At a given temperature, the highest entrapment efficiency of coriander essential oil in PEG microparticles was observed under the lowest experimental pressure condition.

Essential Oil Composition of Umbelliferous Herbs (미나리과 허브식물의 향기성분)

  • The volatile components of umbelliferous herbs having a characteristic spicy aroma were investigated. The essential oils of herbs were isolated by simultaneous steam distillation and extraction and the volatile components were identified by capillary GC and GC/MS. Forty-nine volatile compounds were identified from the herbs. The major compounds of chervil (Anthricus cerefolium) leaf oil were methyl chavicol, 1-allyl-2,4-dimethoxy benzene, and of coriander (Coriandrum sativum) leaf oil were ${\beta}$-sesquiphellan drene, germacrene B, nerolidol, selinene-4-ol, and of coriander seed oil were linalool, decanal, ${\gamma}$-terpinene, $\rho$-cymene.

Fumigant Toxicity of the Constituents of Coriander Oil, Coriandum sativum against Blattella germanica (바퀴에 대한 Coriander Oil (Coriandum sativum) 성분의 훈증효과)

  • Essential oil of five plants were screened for fumigation toxicity against Blattella germanica male adults. Among them, coriander oil showed $100\%$ fumigation toxicity against B. germanica male adults at 20 and $10{\mu}{\ell}/{\ell}$ (air) dose, respectively. Through the constituent analysis using GC and GC/MS, we confirmed that main constituents of coriander oil were ${\alpha}$-pinene ($6.1\%$), camphene ($1.1\%$), ${\beta}$-pinene ($0.5\%$), ${\beta}$-myrcene ($0.8\%$), limonene ($2.5\%$), ${\gamma}$-terpinene ($4.5\%$), ${\rho}$-cymene ($1.8\%$), ${\alpha}$-terpinolene ($0.5\%$), camphor ($4.9\%$), linalool ($70.5\%$), ${\alpha}$-tepineol ($0.7\%$), geranyl acetate ($2.8\%$) and geraniol ($1.4\%$). Among them, ${\gamma}$-terpinene and geranyl acetate showed $100\%$ fumigation toxicity at $10{\mu}{\ell}/{\ell}$ (air) dose, respectively. It can be concluded that coriander oil is potential control agents against B. germanica.

Acute Toxicity of Emulsifiable Concentrate of Coriander Essential Oils against Cyprinus carpio (고수 정유를 원제로 하는 유제 제형의 잉어에 대한 급성독성)

  • Essential oils (EOs) extracted from plants possess various biological activities and have been considered as natural insecticides due to their potent insecticidal activities. In regard to develop natural insecticides, EOs are formulated as an emulsifiable concentrate and their acute toxicity against to fishes were determined in a static condition using Cyprinus carpio. Coriander EO was used as an active ingredient mixed with ethanol for solvent and various surface active agents. The tested EOs were obtained from a commercial market, and three different extractions were also undertaken to produce EO using steam distillation, solvent extraction, and supercritical fluid extraction. Among the emulsifiable concentrate including a commercial coriander EO, surface active agents such as Tween 80, sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS), and mixture of SDBS and Nonidet showed acute toxicity to the fish. With the three different EO extraction, coriander EO obtained from supercritical fluids with Triton X-100 exhibited acute toxicity to C. carpio. Taken together, Tetgitol and Nondet are considered as surface active agents for the emulsifiable formulation of coriander EO.

  • Coriander(Coriandrum sativum L.) belongs to the family Umbelliferae/Apiaceae. It is cultivated as a spice and medicinal herb around the world, including its leaves and seeds. Coriander leaves have soft and fragrant, so they can be used in cuisines such as China, Mexico, and, Southeast Asia. Coriander leaves contain a high amount of vitamin C, carotene, and multiple polyphenols. Coriander essential oils and extracts have various chemical components and are known to have antioxidant, antibacterial, and antifungal activities. This study was carried out for resource discovery, propagation, and DB construction of aromatic plants. In order to evaluate the genetic characteristics, 30 kinds of Coriander seeds were supplied from the Center for Genetic Resources. The evaluation of characteristics of the basal part leaf number, leaf shape, and plant height was investigated. Also, Essential oils extract from various parts of plants including the leaves, flowers, and steam isolated by simultaneous distillation extraction(SDE) apparatus. In the results, heights showed growing to 70 cm over and basal part leaf number 0 to7. The leaves are variable, they are measured according to leaves incisions, and most of the included incision. The qualitative analysis of EOs was performed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. EOs had various chemical compositions. Major compounds were trans-2-Decenal, linalool, decanal, 2-Dodecenal, 13-Tetradecanal, 2-Undecenal.

Synergism in Antifungal Activity against Candida and Trichophyton Species in Combination with the Essential Oil of Coriandrum sativum L. and Antibiotics

  • To determine whether the essential oil from Coriandum sativum and its main component, linalool, exhibit antifungal activity, we employed a broth dilution assay and disk diffusion test using common pathogenic Candida and Trichophyton species. Both coriander oil and linalool significantly inhibited growth of the tested fungi, with minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) in the range of $0.03{\sim}2mg/ml$. Furthermore, in a checkerboard titer test, both the oil fraction and linalool exhibited synergism when combined with ketoconazole, with resultant FICIs ranging from 0.06 to 0.53. Notably, hyphal formation in C. albicans cells was obviously inhibited by C. sativum essential oil in this experiment.

Insecticidal activities of Russia coriander oils and these constituents against Sitophilus oryzae and Sitophilus zeamais (러시아산 고수종자에서 추출한 정유성분 및 구성성분의 쌀바구미 및 어리쌀바구미에 대한 살충효과)

  • Essential oils of coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) seeds were extracted by three extraction methods, steam distillation extraction (SDE), hexane extraction (HE) and supercritical extraction (SE), to compare their insecticidal activities against Sitophilus oryzae and S. zeamais. Although the essential oil extracted by HE and SE did not show insecticidal activities, the essential oil extracted by SDE showed the highest insecticidal activities against S. oryzae and S. zeamais. The chemical compositions of the essential oil extracted by SDE were analyzed by GC-MS. The most abundant compounds were linalool (59.92%), camphor (7.94%), linalool oxide (7.70%), p-cymene (7.44%), ${\alpha}-pinene$ (6.44%), limonene (3.29%) and geranyl acetate (3.19%). Camphor and linalool as major constituents showed the highest insecticidal activities against S. oryzae and S. zeamais whereas other constituents did not show insecticidal activities. As a result, the essential oil extracted by SDE, camphor and linalool showed a potential for development as insecticide against the storage pests.

Fumigant Toxicity of Essential Oils against Adults of Culex pipiens pallens (빨간집모기 성충(Culex pipiens pallens)에 대한 식물오일의 훈증효과)

  • Fumigant toxicity of 34 plant essential oils were tested against female adults of Culex pipiens pallens. Seven oils (basil, coriander, fennel, pennyroyal, peppermint, thyme red, thyme white) showed more than 60% mortality at 1 ${\mu}L\;L^{-1}$ air concentration and pennyroyal oil appeared to have the highest adulticidal activity. GC and GC-MS analysis of the seven essential oils and bioassay of their components revealed that pulegone (a major component of pennyroyal oil) and anethole (a major component of fennel and basil oil, $LD_{50}$, ${\mu}L\;L^{-1}$ air =0.49) showed higher adulticidal activities than others. In addition to the above two components, linalool ($LT_{50}$, min=0.91), camphor ($LT_{50}$, min=1.06), fenchone ($LT_{50}$, min=1.16), 1,8-cineole ($LT_{50}$, min=2.93), and geranyl acetate ($LT_{50}$, min=1.60) also showed higher adulticidal activity than empenthrin ($LT_{50}$, min=3.45).

Status of Selenium Contents and Effect of Selenium Treatment on Essential Oil Contents in Several Korean Herbs (한국의 몇 가지 허브의 셀레늄 함유량 및 셀레늄 처리가 정유 함량에 미치는 영향)

  • The selenium (Se) contents of 20 herbs, harvested in three areas in Korea, were analyzed. Many herbs had no Se. Angelica ($138.4{\mu}g \;Se{\cdot}kg^{-1}$ FW), caraway ($167.8{\mu}g \;Se{\cdot}kg^{-1}$ FW), chamomile ($116.6{\mu}g \;Se{\cdot}kg^{-1}$ FW), marjoram (158.7 and $132.6{\mu}g\;Se{\cdot}kg^{-1}$ FW), and oregano ($62.5{\mu}g\;Se{\cdot}kg^{-1}$ FW) accumulated Se as higher concentration compared with other plants. The Se content of herbs was dependent on the species, cultivars and areas. The status of Se uptake by herbs was investigated according to Se concentrations in hydroponics. During four weeks, before harvest of several herbs in greenhouse, sodium selenate ($Na_2SeO_4$) was added to the nutrient solution at concentrations of 2, 4, 6, and $8mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$. Field-mint accumulated Se too high, but external symptom of Se toxicity was not found. Essential oil content was generally proportionated to treated-Se concentration. The essential oil contents in basil and balm increased two to three times higher by sodium selenate treatment compared to non-treatment, but they did not show any linear relationship between essential oil contents and treated-Se concentration.

  • Agricultural pests, diamondback moth (Plutella xylostella), green peach aphid (Myzus persicae) and two-spotted spider mite (Teyranychus urticae), are becoming major pests in human dwellings in a variety of ways across the world. For management of these pests, the essential oils of Coriandrum sativum and Cinnamomum cassia prepared by steam distillation, hexane extraction and supercritical extraction methods were evaluated for the insecticidal effects. Using the contact bioassay, the $LD_{50}$ value of C. sativum oil by steam distillation extraction method was $30.59{\mu}g/cm^2$ against M. persicae adults. The $LD_{50}$ values of C. cassia oils prepared by steam distillation and hexane extraction methods were 5.96 and $4.64{\mu}g/cm^2$, respectively, against T. urticae adults, and $LD_{50}$ value of the essential oil by supercritical extraction method was $6.50{\mu}g/cm^2$ against M. persicae adults. This study showed that C. sativum and C. cassia oils could be an effective natural acaricide and insecticide against agricultural pests.
