Real-time Implementation of the AMR-WB+ Audio Coder using ARM Core(R) (ARM Core(R)를 이용한 AMR-WB+ 오디오 부호화기의 실시간 구현)

  • In this paper, AMR-WB+ audio coder is implemented, in real-time, using Intel 400MHz Xscale PXA250 with 32bit RISC processor ARM9E-J(R)core. The assembly code for ARM9E-J(R)core is developed through the serial process of C code optimization, cross compile, assembly code manual optimization and adjusting the optimized code to Embedded Visual C++ platform. C code is trimmed on Visual C++ platform. Cross compile and assembly code manual optimization are performed on CodeWarrior with ARM compiler. Through these stages the code for both ARM EVM board and PDA is implemented. The average complexities of the code are 160.75MHz on encoder and 33.05MHz on decoder. In case of static link library(SLL), the required memories are 65.21Kbyte, 32.01Kbyte and 279.81Kbyte on encoder, decoder and common sources, respectively. The implemented coder is evaluated using 16 test vectors given by 3GPP to verify the bit-exactness of the coder.

A Fully Synthesizable Bluetooth Baseband Module for a System-on-a-Chip

  • Bluetooth is a specification for short-range wireless communication using the 2.4 GHz ISM band. It emphasizes low complexity, low power, and low cost. This paper describes an area-efficient digital baseband module for wireless technology. For area-efficiency, we carefully consider hardware and software partitioning. We implement complex control tasks of the Bluetooth baseband layer protocols in software running on an embedded microcontroller. Hardware-efficient functions, such as low-level bitstream link control; host controller interfaces (HCIs), such as universal asynchronous receiver transmitter (UART) and universal serial bus (USB)interfaces; and audio Codec are performed by dedicated hardware blocks. Furthermore, we eliminate FIFOs for data buffering between hardware functional units. The design is done using fully synthesizable Verilog HDL to enhance the portability between process technologies so that our module can be easily integrated as an intellectual property core no system-on-a-chip (SoC) ASICs. A field programmable gate array (FPGA) prototype of this module was tested for functional verification and realtime operation of file and bitstream transfers between PCs. The module was fabricated in a $0.25-{\mu}m$ CMOS technology, the core size of which was only 2.79 $mm{\times}2.80mm$.

Digital Audio Effect System-on-a-Chip Based on Embedded DSP Core

  • This paper describes the implementation of a digital audio effect system-on-a-chip (SoC), which integrates an embedded digital signal processor (DSP) core, audio codec intellectual property, a number of peripheral blocks, and various audio effect algorithms. The audio effect SoC is developed using a software and hardware co-design method. In the design of the SoC, the embedded DSP and some dedicated hardware blocks are developed as a hardware design, while the audio effect algorithms are realized using a software centric method. Most of the audio effect algorithms are implemented using a C code with primitive functions that run on the embedded DSP, while the equalization effect, which requires a large amount of computation, is implemented using a dedicated hardware block with high flexibility. For the optimized implementation of audio effects, we exploit the primitive functions of the embedded DSP compiler, which is a very efficient way to reduce the code size and computation. The audio effect SoC was fabricated using a 0.18 ${\mu}m$ CMOS process and evaluated successfully on a real-time test board.

  • 패킷망을 통한 음성 통신이 발달됨에 따라 패킷 스위칭 채널 환경에서 계층적 구조를 가지는 광대역 음성 부호화기의 개발에 대한 요구가 늘어나고 있다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 차세대 패킷 전화용 광대역 음성 부호화기의 상위 대역에 대해서 효율적인 양자화 방법을 제안한다. 먼저 전체 프레임을 다수의 짧은 부프레임으로 구분하고, 각각의 부프레임에 MLT(Modulated Lapped Transform)변환을 적용하여 주파수 영역으로 변환하여 2차원 구조의 데이터 행렬을 생성한다. 이러한 2차원 구조의 데이터를 크기와 부호로 분리하고, 크기는 2차원 DCT를 사용하여 시간과 주파수 영역에서의 신호 압축을 동시에 얻을 수 있게 하였다. 이와 같은 새로운 구조를 활용하여 기존의 방법보다 Energy Compaction 효과를 높이고 양자화 성능을 향상시킬 수 있었다. 또한 Core Layer의 부호화된 파라미터를 상위 대역의 양자화에 이용함으로써 그 성능을 향상시킬 수 있는 방법을 제안한다.

Adaptive TCX Windowing Technology for Unified Structure MPEG-D USAC

  • The MPEG-D unified speech and audio coding (USAC) standardization process was initiated by MPEG to develop an audio codec that is able to provide consistent quality for mixed speech and music contents. The current USAC reference model structure consists of frequency domain (FD) and linear prediction domain (LPD) core modules and is controlled using a signal classifier tool. In this letter, we propose an LPD single-mode USAC structure using an adaptive widowing-based transform-coded excitation module. We tested our system using official test items for all mono-evaluation modes. The results of the experiment show that the objective and subjective performances of the proposed single-mode USAC system are better than those of the FD/LPD dual-mode USAC system.

  • This paper deals with the effect of SBR bandwidth on the overall performance of the MPEG USAC. Here, the SBR bandwidth is termed the frequency region covered by the SBR codec, and is specified by the bs_stop_freq, which is one of the SBR bitstream components. The performance of the USACs with 5 different SBR bandwidths are compared in a subjective manner using the MUSHRA test. In the comparison, the bit rate is confined to 14~24kbps and only the LPD unit is selected for the core codec. From the comparison, it is observed that the SBR bandwidth that stretches up to 18KHz or above gives the better performance than the others.

An Efficient Architecture of Transform & Quantization Module in MPEG-4 Video Code (MPEG-4 영상코덱에서 DCTQ module의 효율적인 구조)

  • In this paper, an efficient VLSI architecture for DCTQ module, which consists of 2D-DCT, quantization, AC/DC prediction block, scan conversion, inverse quantization and 2D-IDCT, is presented. The architecture of the module is designed to handle a macroblock data within 1064 cycles and suitable for MPEG-4 video codec handling 30 frame CIF image for both encoder and decoder simultaneously. Only single 1-D DCT/IDCT cores are used for the design instead of 2-D DCT/IDCT, respectively. 1-bit serial distributed arithmetic architecture is adopted for 1-D DCT/IDCT to reduce the hardware area in this architecture. To reduce the power consumption of DCTQ modu1e, we propose the method not to operate the DCTQ modu1e exploiting the SAE(sum of absolute error) value from motion estimation and cbp(coded block pattern). To reduce the AC/DC prediction memory size, the memory architecture and memory access method for AC/DC prediction block is proposed. As the result, the maximum utilization of hardware can be achieved, and power consumption can be minimized. The proposed design is operated on 27MHz clock. The experimental results show that the accuracy of DCT and IDCT meet the IEEE specification.

Parallelization Method of Slice-based video CODEC (슬라이스 기반 비디오 코덱 병렬화 기법)

  • Recently, we need to dramatically speed up real-time video encoding and decoding on mobile devices because complexity of video CODEC is significantly increasing along with the demand for multimedia service of high-quality and high-definition videos by users. A variety of research is conducted for parallelism of video processing using newly developed multi-core platforms. In this paper, we propose a method of parallelism based on slice partition of video compression CODEC. We propose a novel concept of a parallel slice for parallelism and propose a new coding order to be adequate to the parallel slice which keeps high coding efficiency. To minimize synchronization time of multiple parallel slices, we also propose a synchronization method to determinate whether the parallel slice could be independently decoded or not. Experimental results shows that we achieved 27.5% (40.7%) speed-up by parallelism with bit-rate increase of 3.4% (2.7%) for CIF sequences (720p sequences) by implementing the proposed algorithm on the H.264/AVC.

MPEG Audio New Standard: USAC Technology (MPEG 오디오 최신 표준: USAC 기술)

  • As mobile devices become multi-functional, and converge into a single platform, there is a strong need for a codec that is able to provide consistent quality for speech and music contents. MPEG-D USAC standardization activities started at the 82nd MPEG meeting with a CfP and approved Study on DIS at the 96th MPEG meeting. MPEG-D USAC is converged technology of AMR-WB+ and HE-AAC V2. Specifically, USAC utilizes three core codecs (AAC, ACELP, and TCX) for low frequency regions, SBR for high frequency regions, the MPEG Surround for stereo information, and window transition technology for smoothing transition between various core coder. USAC can provide consistent sound quality for both speech and music contents and can be applied to various applications such as multi-media download to mobile devices, digital radio, mobile TV and audio books.
