Effects of performance analysis of a desiccant cooling system with a direct evaporative cooler in the regeneration process (재생 입구 직접증발냉각기 적용이 제습냉방시스템 성능에 미치는 영향)

  • In this study the performance analysis and cooling capacity of desiccant cooling system incorporating regenerative cooler and direct evaporative cooler in the regeneration air inlet were investigated on the condition of low regeneration temperature and time rotation 180s and area ratio of regeneration to dehumidification section 0.7. The cooling capacity and COP are evaluated at various effectiveness values of the direct evaporative cooler or the regenerative evaporative cooler. As either of effectiveness of the regenerative and direct evaporative coolers of desiccant cooling system increases, both the cooling capacity and COP increase, but effectiveness value of regenerative cooler gives the opposite effect on the system performance. It is found that effectiveness of regenerative cooler less than 0.7 shows the optimum cooling capacity.

Effects of Water Amount in Refrigerant on Cooling Performance of Vehicle Air Conditioner (냉매 내 수분의 혼입량이 차량 에어컨의 냉각성능에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to figure out the diagnosis basis of cooling performance depending on water amount in the refrigerant of air conditioner, which can be estimated by the temperatures and pressures along the refrigerant circulation line. A car air conditioner of SONATA III (Hyundai motor Co., Korea) was tested at maximum cooling condition at the engine speed of 1500 rpm in the room controlled at 33~$35^{\circ}C$ air temperature and 55~57% relative humidity conditionally. Measured variables were temperature differences between inlet and outlet pipe surfaces of the compressor, condenser, receive drier and evaporator; and high pressure and low pressure in the refrigerant circulation line; and temperature difference between inlet and outlet air of the cooling vent of evaporator. In this study, changes of the water amount in the refrigerant were correlated to the temperatures and pressure changes and also water amount caused poor cooling performance. As water amount increased in the refrigerant in the air conditioner, the performance of the cooling or the heat transfer became worse. Temporal variations of the surface temperature of the evaporator outlet pipe and the low-side pressure showed various patterns that could estimate the water amount. When the water amount caused bad cooling performance, the patterns of the temperature of the evaporator outlet pipe indicated irregular fluctuation greater than $5^{\circ}C$. When the diagnosis system is using just external sensors of the low-side pressure and the temperatures of inlet and outlet air of cooling vent of the evaporator, the precise pattern of bad cooling performance caused by excess water amount in the cooling line was irregular pressure fluctuation, 25 kPa under 120 kPa, and temperature, $12^{\circ}C$ and less.

  • Novel Front End Module(FEM) with improved pedestrian protection is very important to reduce the severity of pedestrian injury. The FEM needs to have enough space from hood to absorb the energy from any pedestrian collision. In this study, the cooling performance of the FEM to cool the engine was investigated under 25% height reduction. The results indicated that the cooling performance analysis was about 86% level compared to that of the conventional FEM. Also, good qualitative agreement between CFD predictions and experimental measurements was found. This FEM needs the cooling performance enhancement for changed air flow path at the frontal part of vehicle. Therefore, we showed an improved performance using air guide setup and shape modification under the high load condition.

A study on the counter-flow cooling tower performance analysis using NTU-method (NTU법을 이용한 대향류형 냉각탑의 성능해석에 관한 연구)

  • The thermal performance of cooling towers is affected by the temperature of inlet water, wet bulb temperature of entering air add water-air flow rate. In this study, the effects of these variables are simulated using NTU-method and experimentally investigated for the counter-flow cooling towers. The simulation program to evaluate these variables which affect the performance of cooling tower was developed. The maximum errors between the results of simulations and experiments were 3.8% under the standard design conditions and 5.4% under the other conditions. The performance was increased up to 46~50% as the water loading was increased from $6.8m^3$/$hr\cdot m^2$ to $15.9m^3$/$hr\cdot m^2$. The range was reduced up to 56~42% when the wet bulb temperature of the entering air was increased from $22^{\circ}C\; to\; 29^{\circ}C.$

  • Cooling characteristics are investigated numerically in the chamber for high-performance burnout of wastes with solid phase. Before the combustion chamber is manufactured, combustion analysis is performed for evaluation of burning rate and cooling performance. A water cooling method is applied and its feasibility for cooling is examined depending on coolant flow rate. Another method of complex cooling is adopted by combining air film cooling with water cooling, leading to improved cooling performance.

  • The occurrence of white plume in the cooling tower is phenomenon that the steam in the air through the cooling tower fan is condensed again by the cold ambient air to become saturated moist air. Accordingly, this can cause many problems like spoiling landscape around the cooling tower, odor of ambient air, falling accident by frozenness in the winter, and traffic accident, etc. This study was to install the heat exchanger in the inside of the cooling tower in order to prevent the white plume phenomenon in the cooling tower without affecting the performance of cooling tower. In addition, this study was to discharge the part of cooling water into the atmosphere through the recirculation of heat exchanger after creating dry air by heating the saturated moist air to the dew point temperature. At that time, this study was to conduct the experimental study in order to secure the optimal design data to prevent the white plume in the cooling tower because it checked the dry·moist temperature and relative humidity in the inside·outside of cooling tower on the moist air, and evaluated the performance of the heat exchanger.

  • The purpose of this study is analyzing the performance of sea water cooling system under various refrigerant pipe length. In sea water cooling system, the increase of refrigerant pipe length cause increases of pressure drops. These pressure drops cause fresh gas in liquid pipe and increase specific volume in gas pipe outlet, so sea water cooling system capacity is decreased by decrease of refrigerant mass flow rate. Sea water cooling system capacity in refrigerant pipe length 70m is decreased more than 30% when compared with pipe length 10m and the decrease of the coefficient of performance is nearly 20%.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the performance of supplemental cooling and heating system equipped with the 1 kW thermoelectric module. The system consist of 96 thermoelectric modules, heat sink with louver fin and water cooling jacket which is attached on the hot side of the thermoelectric module. The cooling and heating performance test of the thermoelectric system is conducted with various conditions, such as intake voltage, air inlet temperature, air flow volume, water inlet temperature and water flow rate at calorimeter chamber in consideration of environmental conditions in realistic vehicle drive. The experimental results of a thermoelectric system shows that the cooling capacity and COP is 1.03 kW, and 1.0, and heating capacity and COP is 1.53 kW, and 1.5 respectively.

  • A numerical study on the cooling performance for electronic components mounted with heat sink in an electronic system has been performed. The model of electronic system consisted with lower and upper modules in which the electronic components mounted with heat sink were arrayed. To find better configuration under a given fan power for effective cooling, the cases called 'No heat sink','Both heat sinks','Lower heat sinks', and 'Upper heat sinks' were tested. The results showed that the cooling performance in 'Upper heat sinks' was the best among four cases.

  • It is widely recognized that exhaust emissions, fuel economy and engine torque are affected by engine temperature, and logic would suggest that a cooling system offering a better compromise of engine temperature would improve both overall engine performance and economy. Author measured coolant temperature of some parts and flow rate which are necessary to heat transfer in a engine. And Author determined parameters necessary for the optimum design of a thermostat to keep the best engine performance ; determined the optimum operating temperature of electric cooling fan. A summary of this study is followed. 1. Study of the effects of cooling condition to combustion character in a engine. 2. Analyze of heat transfer surrounding engine cylinders. 3. Study of the effects of cooling character to engine heat rejection, determination of the optimum collant temperature for keeping the optimum engine performance and determination of the optimum design of a thermostat for keeping that temperature.
