  • In structural design procedure, The procedure of member selection manages complex data relationship and reflects structural expert's knowledge. It is a difficult problem to construct an effective system with the conventional l programming technique. Knowledge_based s!'stem is a software system capable of supporting the explicit representation of expert's knowledge in member selection process through member data and reasoning mechanisms. This study describes useful methodology for structuring knowledge and representing relation between member data and knowledge. And this study shows the application of this member for member selection in the steel structural design.

  • Purpose: A risk evaluation procedure is proposed for common failure causes in FMEA(Failure Mode and Effects Analysis). The conventional FMEA does not provide a proper means to compare common failure causes with other failure causes. This research aims to develop a risk evaluation procedure in FMEA where common failure causes and other failure causes exist together. Methods: For each common failure cause, the effect of each combination of its resulting failures is recommended to be reevaluated considering their interactive worsening effect. And the probability that each combination of failures is incurred by the same common cause is also considered. Based on these two factors, the severity of each common cause is determined. Other procedures are similar to the conventional method. Results: The proposed procedure enables to compare and prioritize every failure cause. Thus, the common causes, each of which incurring two or more failures, and other causes, each of which is corresponding to one failure, can be fairly compared. Conclusion: A fair and proper way of comparing the common failure causes and other causes is provided. The procedure is somewhat complicated and requires more works to do. But it is worth to do.

  • The objective of this study was to develop a new reverse micelle-based microencapsulation technique to load tetracycline hydrochloride into PLGA microspheres. To do so, a reverse micellar system was formulated to dissolve tetracycline hydrochloride and water in ethyl formate with the aid of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide. The resultant micellar solution was used to dissolve 0.3 to 0.75 g of PLGA, and microspheres were prepared following a modified solvent quenching technique. As a control experiment, the drug was encapsulated into PLGA microspheres via a conventional methylene chloride-based emulsion procedure. The microspheres were then characterized with regard to drug loading efficiency, their size distribution and morphology. The reverse micellar procedure led to the formation of free-flowing, spherical microspheres with the size mode of 88 ~m. When PLGA microspheres were prepared following the conventional methylene chloride-based procedure, most of tetracycline hydrochloride leached to the aqueous external phase: A maximal loading efficiency observed our experimental conditions was below $5\%$. Their surfaces had numerous pores, while their internal architecture was honey-combed. In sharp contrast, the new reverse micellar encapsulation technique permitted the attainment of a maximal loading efficiency of 63.19 $\pm$$0.64\%$. Also, the microspheres had smooth and pore-free surfaces, and hollow cavities were absent from their internal matrices. The results of this study demonstrated that PLGA microspheres could be successfully prepared following the new reverse micellar encapsulation technique.

  • This paper proposes a new procedure carrying out a series of consolidated-undrained triaxial tests with a specimen. In this procedure high confining pressure applied to the specimen keeps constant during the test and each stage of consolidation can be controlled by partial drainage. With this procedure the test time is remarkably reduced by performing a series of triaxial tests with a single specimen. In order to verify the appliesbility of the procedure, standard triaxial compression tests and conventional multi -stage triaxial testy are performed for both undisturbed and disturbed samples and the results are compared with those of the proposed procedure. The comparison shows that strength parameters determined by the proposed procedure are well agreed with those of the other tests and thus it can be said that the procedure is very effective and practical in determining strength parameters.

  • In this paper the performance of meta-heuristics algorithms such as GA (Genetic Algorithm), DE (Differential Evolution), PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization) and SA (Simulated Annealing) for the problem of TTC enhancement using FACTS devices are compared. In addition to that in the assessment procedure of TTC two novel techniques are proposed. First the optimization algorithm which is used for TTC enhancement is simultaneously used for assessment of TTC. Second the power flow is done using Broyden - Shamanski method with Sherman - Morrison formula (BSS). The proposed approach is tested on WSCC 9 bus, IEEE 118 bus test systems and the results are compared with the conventional Repeated Power Flow (RPF) using Newton Raphson (NR) method which indicates that the proposed method provides better TTC enhancement and computational efficacy than the conventional procedure.

  • Robotic thyroidectomy has been developed to minimize neck scarring, and several authors have described its feasibility and safety, and have reported surgical outcomes comparable with conventional open thyroidectomy. The da Vinci surgical system robot provides a three-dimensional $10-12{\times}$magnified view of the surgical area. It also provides hand-tremor filtration, fine motion scaling, and precise and multi-articulated hand-like motions. Recently, robotic technology has also been applied to lateral compartment neck dissection in thyroid cancer. We have developed a new novel selective neck dissection procedure by a gasless unilateral axillo-breast (GUAB) approach with a da Vinci Surgical System for well-differentiated thyroid carcinoma to avoid a long visible neck scar. Based on our early experience, robotic selective neck dissection by GUAB approach is a safe, feasible and cosmetically excellent procedure. It can be an alternative to conventional open surgery in the highly selected patients with well-differentiated thyroid carcinoma. The oncologic safety of robotic selective neck dissection should be verified with long-term follow-up data.

  • In this paper, we propose the modified dynamic weighted round robin (MDWRR) cell scheduling algorithm, which guarantees the delay property of real-time traffic and also efficiently transmits non-real-time traffic. The proposed scheduling algorithm is a variation of the dynamic weighted round robin (DWRR) algorithm and guarantees the delay property of real-time traffic by adding a cell transmission procedure based on delay priority. It also uses a threshold to prevent the cell loss of non-real-time traffic that is due to the cell transmission procedure based on delay priority. Though the MDWRR scheduling algorithm may be more complex than the conventional DWRR scheme, considering delay priority minimizes cell delay and decreases the required size of the temporary buffer. The results of our performance study show that the proposed scheduling algorithm has better performance than the conventional DWRR scheme because of the delay guarantee of real-time traffic.
