Numerical simulations are performed to investigate the turbulent convective heat transfer of the supercritical carbon dioxide flows in vertical and horizontal square ducts. The gas cooling process at the supercritical state experiences a sudden change in thermodynamic and transport properties. This results in the extraordinary variations of the heat transfer coefficients in the supercritical state, which are much different from those of single or two phase flows. Algebraic second moment closure which can include the effects of large thermophysical property variations of carbon dioxide and of buoyancy is employed to model the Reynolds stresses and turbulent heat fluxes in the governing equations. The previous correlations for the turbulent heat transfer coefficient for the supercritical carbon dioxide flows couldn't reflect the buoyancy effect. The present results are used to establish a new heat transfer coefficient correlation including the effects of large thermophysical property variation and buoyancy on in-duct cooling process of supercritical carbon dioxide.
Thermofluid flow analysis is major subject in most computational fluid dynamics applications. Accompanying convective and conductive heat transport phenomena, radiation plays an important role in high temperature operating systems. Cares in which the radiation dominates are found in such systems as boilers, furnaces, rocket engines, etc. In this paper the finite-volume method (FVM) are employed to simulate two-dimensional radiation problems in concentric and eccentric horizontal cylindrical annuli with general body-fitted coordinates. In that case the simplest and intuitive remedies are proposed for mitigation of ray effect.
Glass fiber drawing from a silica preform is one of the most important processes in optical fiber manufacturing. High purify silica preform of cylindrical shape is fed into the graphite furnace, and then a very thin glass fiber of 125 micron diameter is drawn from the softened and heated preform. A computational analysis is performed to investigate the heat transfer characteristics of preform heating and the glass fiber drawing in the furnace. In addition to the dominant radiative heating of preform by the heating element in the furnace, present analysis also includes the convective heat transport by the gas flowing around the preform that experiences neck-dawn profile and the freshly drawn glass fiber at high fiber drawing speed. The computational results present the effects of gas flow on the temperature of preform and glass fiber as well as the neck-down profile of preform.
The Finite Element Solutions Is reported on solid-liquid phase change in porous media with natural convection including freezing. The model is based on volume averaged transport equations, while phase change is assumed to occur over a small temperature range. The FEM (Finite Element Method) algorithm used in this study is 3-step time-splitting method which requires much less execution time and computer storage the velocity-pressure integrated method and the penalty method. And the explicit Lax-Wendroff scheme is applied to nonlinear convective term in the energy equation. For natural convection including melting and solidification the numerical results show reasonable agreement with FDM (Finite Difference Method) results.
A mathematical model for the pyrolysis processes during unforced smoldering of cigarette was proposed in this study by analyzing the physical model of the smoldering cigarette (including the establishment of burning front between burning zone and pyrolysis zone, and analyzing the involvement of main factors such as pyrolysis of virgin tobacco, evaporation of water, and internal heat transport in the processes). Thermal conduction of cigarette paper and convective and radiative heat transfer at the outer surface were also considered via the thermal resistance law for the competitive heat transfer mechanisms. The governing partial differential equations were solved using an integral method. Model predictions of smoldering speed, or linear burn rate, as well as temperature and density profiles in the pyrolysis zone for different kinds of cigarettes were found to be close to the experimental data in the literature (Muramatsu, 1981). The model provides a relatively fast and efficient way to simulate the pyrolysis processes and offers a practical tool for exploring important parameters for a smoldering cigarette, such as blended tobacco composition, properties of cigarette paper, and heat flux from the burning zone to the pyrolysis zone.
The convective flow structures in the vapor phase on earth are shown to be single unicellular, indicating the solutally dominant convection is important. These findings reflect that the total molar fluxes show asymmetrical patterns in a viewpoint of interfacial distributions. With decreasing the gravitational level form $1g_0$ down to $1.0{\times}10^{-4}g_0$, the total molar fluxes decay first order exponentially. It is also found that the total molar fluxes decay first order exponentially with increasing the partial pressure of component B, PB (Torr) form 5 Torr up to 400 Torr. Under microgravity environments less than $1g_0$, a diffusive-convection mode is dominant and, results in much uniformity in front of the crystal regions in comparisons with a normal gravity acceleration of $1g_0$.

In this study, the problem of using the mixing index as a measure of the mixing performance for a certain flow field has been discussed. The flow model subjected to this study is the two-dimensional unsteady lid-driven cavity flow. The transport equation for the concentration within the cavity was solved by using the finite volume method where the convective terms are discretized with the central difference scheme. It was shown that both the concentration dispersion and the mixing index depend highly on the initial distribution of the concentration, and therefore the mixing index obtained from the concentration dispersion equation loses its universal applicability.
The use of Hermite cubic element, as a possible finite element computation of transport equations containing shocks, has been invesigated. In the present paper the hermite cubic elements are applied to both linear and nonlinear scalar one and two dimensional equations. In the one dimensional problems, numerical results by the hermite cubic element show better than those by the linear element, and the steady state solution by the hermite cubic element yields result with good resolution. This fact proves the superiority of the hermite cubic element in space differencing. In two dimensional case, the results by the hermite cubic element shows a boundary instability, and the use of higher order time differencing method may be necessary for fixing the problem.

Electroosmotic flux during iontophoresis originates due to the net negative charge of the current passing channels (pores) in skin at physiological pH (pH 7.4). Thus, the channels are permselective to cations, and this causes the convective solvent flow from anode to cathodal direction. This solvent flow facilitates the flux of cations (from anode), inhibits that of anions (from cathode), and enables theenhanced transport of neutral, polar solutes. (omitted)

This solvent flow facilitates the flux of cations (from anode), inhibits that of anions (from cathode), and enables the enhanced transport of neutral, polar solutes. In this work, we have investigated the effect of a series of polyethylene glycols (PEGs) with different molecular weights on the electroosmtic flow to get more detail understanding of this phenomena.
